The Trade Thread

Can't disagree enough. He gets paid tons and doesn't have to produce anything. Middling GM on a middling team. Can't attract players or coaches.

This is a draft and develop franchise based on the complexities in today's NHL with NMCs, NTCs, and rights for players to decide where they want to go.

I get that fans are frustrated by the team's recent struggles and lack of trades, but this narrative that Cheveldayoff doesn't try or doesn't have to try seems rather baseless.

How would you suggest he do better as GM in order to "attract" players or coaches?

Hire a better GM. It's more than 10 years of middling, nothingness. His last coach had to fire himself. Couldn't attract their marquee coach last year. Can't attract players.

But another, "better" GM that can't be named is maybe the answer.

Everything wrong with the Jets is Kevin Cheveldayoff's fault.

It's not all his fault but he's been here over 10 years. Every contract, every coach, every player is his and it's not enough.

You can accept it but the fans, not going to games anymore, are not.

The Jets attendance figures are up compared to last season, though. By a considerable margin.

2021-22: 12716 (https://www.hockeydb.com/nhl-attendance/att_graph_season.php?lid=NHL1927&sid=2022)
2022-23: 14081 (https://www.hockeydb.com/nhl-attendance/att_graph_season.php?lid=NHL1927&sid=2023)

This is a small market Canadian franchise and there is a set of challenges it faces in today's NHL related to trades, player acquisition, and player retention. Whoever were to replace Cheveldayoff would have to deal with that same reality.

Covid. Come on.

The Jets will forever be a middling team with Chevy at the helm. Defend him all you want but you're not ever going to get a truly competitive team with a competitive coach.

Here you are.

Every team plays with the same salary cap.

There isnt a GM out there that would be able to do a much better job than Chevy. His hands are perpetually tied. Winnipeg will forever be the last place players want to sign with/be traded to. I cant imagine how many times he's heard "thanks, but not interested in signing there" and "youre on his no trade list". I think he's done as best a job as any GM in Winnipeg can do.

Swing and a miss. And a really absurd oversimplification.

You ignored the NMC/NTC particulars where the vast majority of players in the NHL have Winnipeg at the top of their list. Not to mention RFA and arbitration rights.

It's like you're not even making an effort to have a worthwhile discussion, man.

If you accept that nothing can be done to make the Jets a better team, then Chevy is your guy. And, I have to wonder about the future of the team if you can't attract anyone to play here and you can't be competitive.
