Going to be interesting to see what the Stampeders do with this one.

Yep, it's not an unbelievable story at all. Pretty run of the mill and if not for the fact he was a college star in Oklahoma where he was arrested it probably wouldn't have been very newsworthy. Besid

I don't honestly know. Even without a history of police run-ins I still give the cops the benefit of the doubt on this one. Nobody got shot despite an alleged assault on an officer, I'd say this ended

Not true at all,   I assume that you have not spoken with an officer in a long time?    Domestic Disturbance is usually a  "frequent customer" call where they go in and the male pleads his case,  the wife stupidly lies and says she over reacted... rinse and repeat.

Much more "action" and "violence" from people trying to run so that they are not busted with drugs.

You could even watch Cops on tv and see way more car chases and other people fleeing because they didn't want to get caught with a few baggies.

Unnecessary violent encounters are rare and make up such a tiny amount of the overall calls that Police deal with.    For every dumb moves like this Starbucks incident ,  I am sure their are 1000's of great moves that go  without notice.   Can't make a generalization based off of a few incidents.

My family is riddled with both RCMP and city police, and all hate going to domestic disturbance calls.

They hate it because so many times it's a waste of police time.     The calls that are "dangerous" are the ones with known gang members who may or may not be packing weapons.

They hate it because of the volatility and unpredictably- often they cannot tell who is doing what to whom and even who will launch themselves at the officers.

Innocent until proven guilty. For both finch and the cops. I Hope nothing horrible is going on with either. But if I had to bet one the cops or finch being dirty, my money is on the cops sadly.

Based on what?

Yeah, the cops do occasionally get it right. Even a blind man can throw a touchdown pass if they throw the ball enough.

That would be very hard to do.

A textbook arrest does not involve punching the suspect in the face repeatedly

Yes, it is after anyone does what Finch did.

Again, the mere fact we have the visuals with the  mug shot shiner thrown in for good measure shows cops and county prosecutor are more than comfortable with it all.

Not true at all, my mom last month fell and slipped outside on the ice and had a massive swollen eye and purple shiner they looked like she was in a fight. All she did was fall face first in the sidewalk.  Just because the guy's face is swollen doesn't mean he was beaten to a pulp.  Him being tackled from running could easy explain the shiner.

Not disagreeing.  People are looking for something sinister here. There isnt.

Well if you run from the cops, I think it's a fair expectation that you're going to get tackled and probably injured in the process (been there!).  But I'd agree that the face-punching is unnecessary.

As the pursuer or pursuee?

You fled from the cops? I take "been there" to mean just that.

It sounds like Mr. Finch forgot to read his textbook prior to his textbook arrest.

It’s almost never effective in making an arrest to throw punches. In my expert opinion anyway lol

Open hand slaps instead?

I take it as a positive sign that he is facing this situation and beginning to take responsibility for it. He may end up doing time and the road ahead may be a difficult one...but I still hope the best for him.

There is a slap technique that can disorient a suspect. We were taught to use a cupped slap at the base of the skull. I didn’t like doing it though. And I’ve seen guys knocked loopy with a slap to the side of the head.

It was a joke,  an open hand slap to stop someone is a terrible move.   It looked ridiculous enough back in the Pancrase days... a punch is much more effective and would decrease the odds of hurting yourself big time.

Certainly sounds like he did. Text book says when perp does this cops should do THIS. And they did.

Oh I know. I was remarking that a cupped slap is a legitimate move. The idea is never to throw strikes unless you have no choice due to the inherent risk involved.

I wasn’t a fan of the slap either. If I’m able to slap a guys head, the more effective move is to actually take hold of the person and restrain them.

Somewhat unrelated and I am unsure if you are still bouncing these days.   But if so a must watch is Bas Rutten's self defense videos at a bar...  absolutely hilarious stuff.

The choke-hold defense, I was taught in one of my courses.  Reach back and grab a guys junk.  Also raising your hands straight up in the air and turning away.   I dont think i've ever been put in a choke-hold though.  Fortunately, most idiots at the bar think they're UFC fighters and take some fighter stance they saw on TV and want to throw bombs.  After they miss the first one, they are generally tied up pretty easily.

One of our courses was with a guy named Bissett (I cant recall his first name).  He was a security expert and bodyguard.  He mystified many of us when he admitted he always wore a cup.  Not just when he was working, but when he went out with friends.  Always.  lol

My bouncing days are over.  I started when I was 18 and eventually ended up at the Palladium where I stuck around because I became close friends with ownership.  When they closed in 2008, I was recruited to Alive but it just wasnt the same.  And I thought I'd enjoy just being one of the guys and *not* being in charge, but it was hard watching things be done wrong.  I didnt need the money so I eventually just quit (the manager had agreed to pay me under the table but then changed his mind).

In my time, i worked for Canad Inns (various hotels/nightclubs), Grapes on Main & Pier 7, random security (including assignment to a burned out building on Higgins where I did over-nights alone, Grace Hospital etc, McPhillips Station Casino (lame), 8 Trax and then Palladium as well as working as a peace officer for about a year.
