US Politics

Lets see if we can keep this thread a little more civil.

I found this interview very interesting.  A lot of soft balls thrown at Trump, he explained his back pedalling on his more extreme issues as a lot of his claims as opening bids for negotiation purposes.  Which .. whatever .. I still think that those are insincere claims he used to get elected.

He does now come across way more presidential then he did prior to the election.  A lot of his noise, yelling, and rhetoric has been scaled back.

Do respect this one though:

Quote

Lesley Stahl: Are you gonna take the salary, the president’s salary?

Donald Trump: Well, I’ve never commented on this, but the answer is no. I think I have to by law take $1, so I’ll take $1 a year. But it’s a -- I don’t even know what it is.

Donald Trump: Do you know what the salary is?

Lesley Stahl: $400,000 you’re giving up.

Donald Trump: No, I’m not gonna take the salary. I’m not taking it.

As you said, this is getting serious. Trump staring at impeachment, Bolton, Saudi Arabia, Israel, been insisting on a war with Iran, (with American money and soldiers) for years.

If they attack Iran, Iran might bomb Israel. Israel has nuclear weapons.

Apparently  a million dead in Iraq, hundreds of thousands of Syrians, libyans, and Yemenis, is not enough to satisfy America.

The idea that Iran would attack a Japanese vessel while the leader of Japan is in Iran talking peace, is Alice in Wonderland level surreal.

World has to stop this.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia repeatedly exhorted the United States to “cut off the head of the snake” by launching military strikes to destroy Iran’s nuclear program, according to leaked U.S. diplomatic cables.

A copy of the cable dated April 20, 2008, was published in the New York Times website on Sunday after being released by the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks. The classified communication between the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh and Washington showed the Saudis feared Shi’ite Iran’s rising influence in the region, particularly in neighboring Iraq.

Saudis  have their own massive air force, one of the biggest in the world. Why don't they fight their own war? Probably cause they can't even defeat tiny povery stricken Yemen. Iran would make mincemeat of the Saudis.

Funny thing, there are no cables, reports, or speeches in which Iran demands somebody destroy Saudi Arabia.

But sure, it's Iran.

Probably.

You can throw Israel and the UAE in there as well.

The smartest thing that Trumps lawyers did for him was not let him be interviewed by Mueller's team

This guy probably knows a bit more than Trump.

Admiral Lord West - who was the last man to leave Devonport-based warship HMS Ardent when she was attacked by Argentina on this week in 1982 with the loss of 22 lives -  has said it would take one million soldiers to defeat and occupy Iran.

He told Daily Star Online: “The US would need at least one million troops to successfully pacify Iran, and a half-baked attack could throw the region further into chaos.

"If the US and Britain couldn’t beat Iran in a straight bang-on-bang contest they we should all go home.

“But what we can’t do unless we go onto a war footing and having conscription is have a sufficient number of troops to go occupy the country.

“It is such dangerous loose talk, and its all well and good being ‘aren’t we clever, we can shoot down your planes and sink your ships’ – but you haven’t finishing winning the war.

“That what the real problem is and thats what these idiots who are saying lets go to war with Iran don’t understand.

“I don’t think they are clever enough to understand, they know nothing about wars.”

Bolton seems to enjoy inflicting mass  chaos and misery.

I think Cocaine Mitch is one of the most Loathsome politicians to ever go through Washington.

Trump keeps commenting about staying longer than his term.

I hope normal Americans are paying attention to these things, and vote.

yeah, it might be that.

Well done  NY Times profile of liz Warren.

When she was growing up, Warren’s father worked as a salesman at Montgomery Ward and later as a janitor; neither of her parents went to college. In the early 1960s, when Warren was 12, her father had a heart attack and lost his job in Oklahoma City. One day, after the family’s station wagon was repossessed, her mother put on the one formal dress she owned, walked to an interview at Sears and got a job answering phones for minimum wage. This has become the story that Warren tells in every stump speech. She uses it to identify with people who feel squeezed.

In September 2017, North Korea detonated a nuclear device beneath Mount Mantap. A new study, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, is trying to interpret these seismic signals. It suggests that the 2017 explosion could have been more than 10 times larger than any of the country's other tests from the previous decade. The uncertainty surrounding the test puts the yield of the bomb somewhere between 148 and 328 kilotons of TNT, though the researchers think it was possibly around 250 kilotons. To give a comparison, the bomb the US dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 that killed tens of thousands of people was about 15 kilotons.

So Trump attacks Iran, which does not have nuclear weapons.

But it makes sense, when you figure, how many billions the Saudis probably gave Trump. Israel, not having spare billions, named some land they do not own after him. Perfect tribute.

actually quite similar to when Bush attacked Iraq, which was an enemy of Bin Laden, and left Saudi, home of Al quaeda, along.

You need to look up "The Grand Bargain".

Here is a quick primer:

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1044986880310300673.html

You can take it pretty much at face value or as a discussion starter - you need to look stuff up to verify some stuff... but the supporting documentation is out there.

"NOTE/ All of the claims above are fully supported by public records—and public investigative journalism by major-media outlets. None of what you see above is a "theory"; indeed, I've only published an executive summary, here, not all the supporting facts. More in the weeks ahead."

an article in the NY'r

https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/israeli-saudi-and-emirati-officials-privately-pushed-for-trump-to-strike-a-grand-bargain-with-putin

During a private meeting shortly before the November, 2016, election, Mohammed bin Zayed, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, floated to a longtime American interlocutor what sounded, at the time, like an unlikely grand bargain. The Emirati leader told the American that Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, might be interested in resolving the conflict in Syria in exchange for the lifting of sanctions imposed in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Apparently Trump thinks that the Democratic candidate for the 20 election will be Hilary Clinton after last nights rally in Florida.
