US Politics

Lets see if we can keep this thread a little more civil.

I found this interview very interesting.  A lot of soft balls thrown at Trump, he explained his back pedalling on his more extreme issues as a lot of his claims as opening bids for negotiation purposes.  Which .. whatever .. I still think that those are insincere claims he used to get elected.

He does now come across way more presidential then he did prior to the election.  A lot of his noise, yelling, and rhetoric has been scaled back.

Do respect this one though:

Lesley Stahl: Are you gonna take the salary, the president’s salary?

Donald Trump: Well, I’ve never commented on this, but the answer is no. I think I have to by law take $1, so I’ll take $1 a year. But it’s a -- I don’t even know what it is.

Donald Trump: Do you know what the salary is?

Lesley Stahl: $400,000 you’re giving up.

Donald Trump: No, I’m not gonna take the salary. I’m not taking it.

I suspect that if somehow you could concentrate the Trumpers into one party of the US, you would have a caliphate there in no time.

You don't have to look far around here to find people of the same ilk.

We had friends from Alberta drop in over the past weekend and the topic of the provincial election inevitably came up. His comment, was ," we know Smith is really stupid but Notley is dangerous" as if Notley had nuclear weapons and a 24 of beer in her home.

Dont pay much attention to margerie green... but she appears to be willing to eat unlimited quantities of ****, if it comes from the right sphincter.

The danger of notley is spending money to improve public services... the danger of Smith and conservatives is the ly gut public services while spending money to enrich the already rich. So dangerous.

By A Driver Whose Kids Are Named Aryan And Nation

Mika Westwolf was reportedly killed by a driver who some say was motivated by hate. But two months later, police have yet to file charges in her death.

Twenty-two-year-old Mika Westwolf was walking to her home on the Flathead Reservation in Montana late at night in March when she was struck and killed by a driver who then allegedly left the scene.

Details quickly emerged suggesting an ideological element to the crash. The driver — identified by police as 28-year-old Sunny White — was with her young children, Aryan, 4, and Nation, 2. Many in the community believe White is a white nationalist and that the crash was intentional. And yet, more than two months later, White has yet to face charges stemming directly from Westwolf’s death.

Former U.S. president Donald Trump arrived at a Miami courthouse on Tuesday to face criminal charges that he unlawfully kept national security documents when he left office and lied to officials who sought to recover them.

Trump and former aide Walt Nauta were booked, a court official said, ahead of an arraignment scheduled for 3 p.m. ET when they were due to submit a plea.

Trump has repeatedly proclaimed his innocence and accuses Democratic President Joe Biden's administration of targeting him. He called Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is leading the prosecution, a "Trump hater" on social media on Tuesday.

Smith accuses Trump of taking thousands of papers containing some of the nation's most sensitive national-security secrets when he left the White House in January 2021 and storing them in a haphazard manner at his Mar-a-Lago Florida estate, according to a grand jury indictment released last week.

The 37-count indictment includes violations of the Espionage Act, which criminalizes unauthorized possession of defence information, and conspiracy to obstruct justice, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The charges include references to 31 top secret or secret documents.

Trump has argued that he declassified the records in question and that his broad presidential powers gave him the authority to disclose or declassify materials. However, the Espionage Act itself does not explicitly require prosecutors to prove that the records themselves were classified.

All Trumps defense needs is to find that 1 juror who will not believe a word that the prosecutors say in this case and he will go on his merry way. If you saw any of the protestors todays many of them look like you and me the only difference is that they are part of a cult and their God is under attack.

Judge Aileen Cannon will not preside over Trump arraignment: report

Controversial U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon will not preside over the arraignment of former President Donald Trump for the alleged mishandling of national defense documents, it was reported Monday.

Although Trump's case was randomly assigned to Cannon, the arraignment will be handled by Magistrate Judge Jonathan Goodman.

If Judge Cannon does not recuse herself from this trial then delay will be the order of the day and we probably wont see a trial until next year if ever especially if a Republican wins the Presidency.

Trump is a cancer on politics, and is the biggest black eye to conservatism in the past 100 years. I hope he rots in jail so we can get some sanity back in the US.

He is a symptom, not the cause.

Sanity will not return to the US because of his incarceration.

It's not just Trump. It's human garbage like Gaetz, Taylor Greene, Boebert, DeSantis, and so many more.

Sanity won't return to the US political landscape any time soon - regardless of what happens with the fetid orange pustule.

Trump has spawned mini versions of himself all over America, politicians down there are all about the sound bite and enriching themselves, serving the people is an after thought

They're all examples of cancer that has spread to other parts of the body

Trump is the embodiment of what conservatism has become. I mean it's not like he had who he was to get elected.  This has been a slow steady march. Trump was just ripping the mask off.

TRUMP MAY HAVE GOTTEN HIMSELF CONVICTED WITH BEDMINSTER SPEECH
Donald Trump chose to give a political speech after being arraigned on federal charges and some of the statements that he made will likely be used against him at trial.  There were two relevant moments that were bad for Trump’s legal defense:

Trump called the government documents his presidential papers:
Trump said:

"Charging a former president of the United States under the Espionage Act of 1917 It wasn’t meant for this. An act for a crime so heinous that only the death penalty would do and threatening me with 400 years in prison for possessing my own presidential papers, which just about every other president has done. Is one of the most outrageous and vicious legal theories ever put forward in an American court of law. The Espionage Act. Has been used to go after traitors and spies. It has nothing to do with a former president, legally keeping his own documents as president, a law that applies to this case is not the Espionage Act, but very simply the Presidential Records Act.

None of what Trump said is true or correct. He doesn’t seem to know what the Presidential Records Act is, or that it applies to sitting presidents, and the legal requirement to preserve all documents while in office. Trump also argued that the government documents are his personal presidential papers, which they are not. Classified documents are not presidential papers."

TRUMP’S BAD DAY GETS EVEN WORSE AS JUDGE ALLOWS E. JEAN CARROLL TO ADD CNN TOWN HALL DEFAMATION TO LAWSUIT

A federal judge has ruled in favor of E. Jean Carroll and allowed her to amend her defamation complaint to include comments made by Trump at his CNN town hall.

Carroll is seeking additional defamation damages for comments made by Trump about her at his CNN town hall. Instead of backing off after he lost the first defamation lawsuit against Carrol, Trump doubled down by going on national television and attacking her.

The CNN town hall was a bust for everyone who was involved. The special didn’t deliver big ratings for the network. It got former CNN boss Chris Licht fired, and Trump is now facing additional damages in the E. Jean Carroll lawsuit.

Trump spent Tuesday being arrested and arraigned in Miami on 37 federal counts related to violations of the Espionage Act and obstruction of justice, and somehow his day managed to get even worse.

He fed a frenzy, no doubt about it, but cooler heads can prevail. A lot of his zealot support was not traditional conservatives, it was from those that felt disenfranchised, and the wingnuts. A ton of traditional Republicans parked their vote with the Dems because Trump was just too out there for them. Just as I would have if I were a US resident. With a more moderate leader the Republicans take the next election easy. Although, I think that DeSantis is not far off from Trump either which is disheartening.

It would be a single, small step in a long journey with no guarantee of success. Both industry leaders and fundamentalist leaders in the US have said out loud that democracy does not serve their interests well.

Every journey starts with a single, small step. It's time for the moderate right to take back their parties here and in the US.

I believe DeSantis is worse. I think he actually believes the crap he spouts and spews. Trump on the other hand had a  belief system started and ended himself. Whatever stoked and stroked his ego was what he promoted. The only saving grace with DeSantis is maybe he won't sweep the masses along with him.
