What the hell does that even mean? Canada has been leading the world in economic growth consistently and are one of the best countries in the world to live in. If that's stagnation I'll take it. Go travel the world a bit and come back, and you'll appreciate what we have a lot more. Have a look at those idiots in the EU, trying to prop up those lazy commies in Greece. Now THAT"s stagnation. Perhaps be a tad less patronizing? You don't know what I've done or experienced. The economy isn't the be all and end all (and we're nothing special in that regard) - we're stagnating in social progress, environmental progress and healthcare among other things. I didn't say Canada is a bad country to live in.

The Alberta NDP campaigned on making corporations and specifically oil and gas companies pay more. They are actively looking to make it a less business friendly environment. Wish I was a teacher, then I'd be taken care of by the NDP. As it stands they're just going to tax me more, slow down an already slow oil field which means I'll earn less with less work, all in the name of someone else should pay for the spending. **** the NDP and their ass backwards ideals. If you seriously think Manitoba has a strong economy you are out to lunch. What Manitoba has is a stable economy because there isn't much to it. Doesn't have far to drop so a recession doesn't impact it like it would gigantic economies like Alberta or Ontario. Show me the stats. They didn't get the big money Alberta was fortunate to dig up. that's a defeatist attitude. Manitoba could have worked to build up some type of industrial or commercial base, but instead the province has had a long tradition of socialism and anti business policies. High taxes and pro-union governments make Manitoba into what it is. There's resources in Manitoba too, but there isn't a lot of incentive for companies to base themselves in Manitoba. So anti-business that we have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. It's just a fact of living here that there are more expenses and fewer resources than Alberta. Manitoba certainly wasn't competitive with Alberta when the PCs were in change for a decade, so you can hardly blame pro-union or anti-business attitudes for anything.

I mean things certainly aren't peachy keen, but comparing Manitoba to Alberta isn't exactly fair. Alberta sits on a pile of black gold, doesn't have to deal with annual floods of the caliber that we see, and in general is built on better terrain than Manitoba. With all these advantages, the conservatives have routinely screwed the pooch in Alberta, and the fact that people are even comparing the two provinces is evidence of that. I can't really fault the NDP for the debt considering the federal government is also still in deficit, and the 8% PST thing was so overblown it's not funny. The same people who advocated for a decade long property tax freeze (this is the real cause of the crumbling infrastructure) are the same people who are complaining about the PST. All that said I really think that Manitoba needs a change in leadership, which is why I was hoping Selinger would be defeated here. Pallister is just too much of a buffoon to govern and the fact that he will likely win terrifies me. It's times like these that I wish we had proportional representation so that voting for a third party was feasible.

It's absolutely worth putting the artist together with the art. And if they're pieces of garbage, their art should suffer. People need to held accountable for their crimes. Would you listen to music written by Josef Stalin? If Stalin made some decent music then I would have no problem listening to it. People still listen to the Beetles and we all know how John Lennon beat his wife.

They shouldn't stop playing it. You have to separate the art from the artist or you'll be excluding a lot of historical works from the public lexicon

heh, this thread turned into a shitshow. I think it's OK to be skeptical of the dealings going on at city hall given our history with corruption over the past decade. Bowman comes from the same group of social elite that a lot of our politicians come from in Manitoba, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that something untoward is going on with this situation. That said, Mayor Bowman has done a good job so far IMO, so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

What makes your opinions more credible than anyone else's? Don't really agree with the way Spuds worded that there but... reading the last few comments on page 1 here, He is pretty much bang on. I mean there is tons of speculation and made up stuff there for sure from one guy atleast and with no real facts to back up what he is saying. I mean, honestly, if you are accusing people of doing back room deals over land or whatever else really, you better have some damn good facts to back it up and quite frankly, there are no facts. Just a bunch of speculation and really guessing big time, i wanna call it blowing smoke up peoples asses cuz that's actually what a few of those posts are pretty much doing. Only problem is that Mark Chipman publicly endorsed Brian Bowman for mayor. My instincts tell me that Chipman expected something in return for that endorsement and that mayor Bowman will cave and allow TNSE to develop the land. I suspect Mr Bowman and Mr Chipman have spoken several times over the past couple weeks on this matter.We will see what kind of backbone our mayor has this week. RFP and he's got a backbone (although TNSE could still win the bid through the RFP), or council decides to give the contract directly to TNSE means Bowman is paying back a favour to Chipman. Will be interesting... Absolutely nonsense. This is the "dirty" aspect of politics. Someone endorses a politician and must be expecting a favour? Give me a break. There is absolutely nothing to indicate Chipman traded his endorsement for a favour.What it seems like is CV has a deal for a hotel project there. SOD claims they have a deal too. Let them both submit bids and let council pick one. Done and done. Supposedly SOD was having trouble finding a hotel partner and let CV know that. If CV turned around and did their own search and made a deal with TN and then SOD said hey wait we think we have a partner now, I can understand if CV was reluctant to throw away their work. Election support from business in exchange for political favors happens ALL the time. But I sure hope you're right about Bowman treating Chipman tougher. You're accusing two people of criminal behavior in this thread. You really think two lawyers would be dumb enough to have an almost direct and transparent quid pro quo around a municipal election endorsement and deferential treatment in the SHED? is that a joke? Stuff like this happens all the time. Not saying that this is the case with Bowman (and I wasn't exactly a Bowman supporter during the campaign), but you'd have to be naive to think that these kind of deals don't happen.
