  1. Definitely reminds me of the 1981 season. We had a great football team, but unless we could convince Joe Montana and Jerry Rice to move to Winnipeg we weren't going to beat the Eskimos that year.
  2. Melvin (Fritz) Hanson In the early 1930s, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were tired of losing to the Regina Roughriders and decided to do soemthing about it. What they did was to recruit some top notch imports and the best of them was Fritz Hanson, out of North Dakota. Hanson weighed only 145 pounds, but had incredible speed and elusiveness which earned him nicknames like "The Galloping Ghost," "The Golden Ghost," "Twinkle Toes" and the "Phantom Flash." Hanson joined the Blue Bombers in 1935 and helped lead Winnpeg to the first Grey Cup by a West team, upsetting the Hamilton Tigers 18-12. Hanson would go on to play with Winnpeg until 1941 when World War II got in the way and Hanson joined the Canadian Army. Hanson briefly returned to play for Winnipeg again in 1945, playing in at least one exhibiton game before his Army duties forced him to retire for the season. In the 7 years from 1935 to 1941, the Bombers went to the Grey Cup 6 times, missing only once in 1936. Besides 1935, the Bombers and Hanson won two other Grey Cups in 1939 and 1941. That first win in 1935 was the big one though and while very few stats are available from that era, Hanson had over 300 yards in punt returns that game including a 78 yard return for a touchdown. Hanson won West All-Stars (there were no Canadian All-Stars until 1962) in five straight years from 1937 to 1941. Hanson would go on to finish his career with the Calgary Stampeders in 1947 and 1948. The 1948 season provided a suitable bookend to his first year in 1935 as the Stampeders were undefeated and went on to Win the Grey Cup. That Grey Cup was memorable both for the Stampeder fans riding horses into the lobby of the Royal York Hotel and for the sleeper play that won the Stampeders the game. Fritz Hanson was an easy choice as an inaugral member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1963. Fritz Hanson passed away on February 14, 1996.
  3. yeah now give me five bees for a quarter.
  4. I just wanted to add that this year I couldn't accuse anyone of dogging it out there. Even DeLeo was working hard. Its clear that these kids know they have to impress. Waked is on an ELC try-out so now I know why he was trying to take peoples' heads off out there. Last year the one thing I didn't like was that it seemed like a lot of the kids, especially Petan, didn't really give a crap. This year was miles better in that department, and at least I felt I got my money's worth this time.
  5. you should start wearing an onion on your belt now, so that you can let those youngsters in 2045 know that it was the style at the time...
  6. Yeah the TSN database guy doesn't work Sundays. His kid must have logged in and been fooling around.
  7. It was Spacek/Fronk/Waked - best line for the Jets.
  8. After that perfectly timed hit on Gurley by Loffler, I went from man-crush to full on totally in love.
  9. Right, I got that as soon as I looked at the roster and saw that Morrissey wasn't on it. This guy looked pretty good out there: http://jetsnation.ca/2016/8/24/jets-invite-kristians-rubins-to-young-stars-tournament-in-penticton Stallard was playing on a line with Roslovic and Connor, and they had a few scoring chances. The line buzzing the most was Spacek/Fronk and Harkins (or was it Gennaro?) They seemed to be moving fast and making some chances happen. Jets defence was definitely not in sync - Kostalek and Stanley on the PP looked like they both couldn't see each other, kept missing on passes. Green also didn't look that good either.
  10. Whatever they name it, may it be here to stay as the Bombers finally begin to right the ship and start on a long decade or more of winning. In 30 years some of the current board young bucks will be telling the next generation of Bomber fans "I remember the game where that tradition started" and the response will be "oh no another boring story about the Bomber glory days from the board old farts"....
  11. Kyle Connor has a lot in common with Justin Trudeau - he looks good, but he's just not ready. I expect him to be Moose-bound this year. Of course, I thought that of Ehlers last year too after seeing him play in the YS. Logan Stanley looked lost out there. He needs a few more years of development. I didn't see Morrissey out there, I thought he was supposed to be playing in this tournament? Roslovic - needs another year of junior and then a year of two with the Moose Lemieux - looked a lot better than last year. If any of these guys make it with the big club, I would say he's got the best chance. Jiri Fronk and Spacek looked fast. Some guy with the last name "Waked" was flying around hitting guys. All around much better effort than last year. Both teams were working their butts off out there. Very entertaining game.
  12. will give my assessment tomorrow night after the Jets/Canucks meet tomorrow. We'll see how Connor and Roslovic do against the Young Canucks. Not much of a supporting cast around them, that's for sure.
  13. I thought this article summed a lot up for me: Read more at http://www.stockhouse.com/news/newswire/2016/09/16/hillary-or-donald-who-cares#5LAjobMX8Tse1DPf.99
  14. I thought that O'Shea didn't kick the FG purely because he didn't feel like running up the score on his old buddy Milanovich.
  15. let's hope that Lirim returns to his 2015 form today and misses 4 out of 5 FG's. I think the crowd should all chant "Lirim!!!" or something to throw him off his game...
  16. Does he like football? Has he watched any games with you on TV? I was six when I went to my first game but I was already a BB fan at that point having watched games on TV with my dad and though I don't think I knew all of the rules I watched every minute of the live game we went to (Ottawa was in town), and was hooked for life after that.
  17. I've invented this toilet for watching Bomber games in the basement. Because going upstairs to poop is the hardest thing in the world.
  18. what's the story? Looks like Pederson and Dunk were canned by the CFL?
