Im not sure its that they dont go there, its that its a tourist area and they arent tourists.  But Im sure they go there for events they want to see. 

vegas gets 3 milion tourists a month.  And I was surprised to learn its actually pretty consistent year round.  I always figured it was way up from Spring to Fall and way down in the winter.  But its consistent.

Now, I dont think hockey is high on the list of most Vegas tourists.  But it will become another thing to do.  And a lot of tickets will be bought by the casinos to be used as prizes, give aways etc.  Between the locals who like hockey (and Vegas has had a decent hockey history) and tourists, I think they will do ok.

Even if they dont sell out every game, they likely sell most of the tickets and are financially stable.  I think Vegas can work.  If the team ends up good at some point, all bets are off as I think it could be like Los Angeles times 100 with the hype in Vegas for a Cup contender.

Cause giving away tickets not necessarily mean people will show up. If you buy a ticket you feel committed to showing up.

It still means the ticket was purchased, though. Empty seats never look good, but unsold tickets and empty seats look worse.

Yes but thats what I mean by the fact that even if the arena isnt sold out, they will make money.  That's my guess.  But there is enough people in Vegas to make a go of it.  They wont have the issue that Arizona did with a very bad location for the arena. 

The vegas arena is very close to the airport and ofcourse, essentially attached to the strip.

It means the tickets are being devalued, even if someone is paying for them, the fans are not.

One of the struggles that the new Panther ownership mentioned after they took over was getting fans to 'buy' tickets. They had been so used to getting them for free, why bother paying for them? So, the Panthers stopped handing them out for free and faced smaller crowds. But, they believed they were doing what was necessary to change the mindset.

The practice free tickets for attractions don't really happen in Vegas anymore. World class entertainment costs money.

No doubt that's the case. But that's pretty much been the norm in non-hockey markets with NHL franchises for years now.

It will be interesting... because I could see lots of people in Winnipeg buying a bundle that sends them to Vegas for 3 days that includes flight, hotel and tickets to the game.     Same with other Canadian cities....

I know I'm waiting for the schedule to come out and booking a flight, Vegas and the Jets you bet.

So with the Canadian teams, that's 11 - 14 home games.   Throw in another 10 - 15 for hardcore American fans in the stronger hockey markets. 

What about the other half of the home games?  

What about in 3 - 4 years when Vegas is no longer a novelty and people decide they aren't making the trip every year. 

It is great Vegas is a destination city, and vacationers will certainly help attendance, but for the franchise to truly be successful, they need to make an impact and get a following locally. 

Playoff revenue is huge for teams to make money.  Lets say the Jets and Knights face each other in a playoff series a number of years down the road.

All true. 

But this expansion draft is so heavily weighted towards the Vegas Strippers, that they're bound to do well. Unless of course McPhee manages to screw everything up.

They'll get in the playoffs in a few years and be successful in the short term.

They absolutely need to be popular among the local community.  But I believe Vegas has a good hockey history at the college level. I think they had an outdoor game years ago too.

Its all about local support. We will see in a few years. I do think They will be more San Jose than Phoenix. By that i mean i think the locals will support it but... At the same time... Nfl is coming to town so that might take the novelty of the knights away quicker.
