Around the NHL

Catch all thread for discussing other NHL teams/news.

Up first:  Pittsburgh Penguins, my secondary team to cheer for.

I guess their worst start since Sid's rookie year could be because of their lousy defense.  Or bad coaching.  Or Kessel.

But in reality its because I took Fleury in my pool every year for 10 years until last year when I was fed up, he has his best year ever and then I took him this year and now he sucks.

But really, whats the deal?  They might be the first to can their coach.

Laine will go 2nd.

Depending on who picks first... Laine could go 1st.  I get that you are very high on Matthews... a guy you've seen play? Once maybe twice right but what Laine is doing in a better league at the same age... altho younger since Matthews has a late birthday is pretty Damn impressive.

Matthews is a good player but at the same time Laine is also. There is no guarantee that Matthews goes first.

Matthews will be a 1C....Laine will be a 1LW.

We need the 1C.

No. We actually need the 1 LHD. But ok.

So we are winning the draft lottery now? Cool.

Pointless to talk about the draft right now until draft order is determined

It seems like there's a big drop from the top 4 guys to everybody else. I wouldn't be too concerned about trying to move up if we get one of those picks, but I'd certainly entertain moving a dman along with our pick to get up to #1 if we don't.

We have a 1RHD so a 1LHD isn't as necessary. It would be nice to get a 2LHD but Trouba was filling that position until recently. We could also use a 3rd RHD if Postma isn't one. We need a 1C.

Who is 4? Tkachuk?

Goalie, Do you consider Chychrun or Sergachev a future 1LHD?

I think Chychrun could be. I also like Jake Bean from Calgary

If the Jets pick lower than 3rd and Chychrun is available, I would take him.

Lawless said yesterday that when Edmonton wins the lottery the Jets should package up their 1st rounder and Trouba for the 1st overall. I don't think we should trade Trouba but this is a very interesting proposal.

No one is trading away the #1 overall. Heck EDM would trade Hall/N-H to get Matthews.

4 or 5 for Tkachuk. Jacob Chychrun might go higher depending on who needs a d-man more.

The LHDman Chychrun could go as high as 3 in my books.

Not a draft pick but really hope the Jets are able to pick up Winnipeger Adam Brooks after his season is over with the Regina Pats the 19 year old went undrafted last year. Has been on a unbelievable tear the second half of the season now leads the league in points with 90+. Gritty max energy forward would be good depth for organization.

Can they not sign him as free agent Mr Brooks?

yes they could I would imagine he would wait till after the season to sign a deal.

The Washington Capitals have acquired defenceman Mike Weber from the Buffalo Sabres for a third-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.

Buff tanking again?

Where the heck is the love for Puljujarvi?

Stempy with his 16th :P

Can't go wrong with either Finn.

Laine is more of a goal scorer. Pulu is more of a set up man. Actually Pulu gets compared to wheeler quite a bit.

Goalie Ed Belfour's Olympic gold auctioned off for $34,777

Ed Belfour's decision to trade his Olympic gold medal to go into the distilling business with his son has paid off.

The medal the Hockey Hall of Fame goalie won at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games was auctioned off for $34,777 on Tuesday, according to the final bid listed by Classic Auctions. Overall, the 66 items of hockey memorabilia Belfour put up for sale sold for nearly $179,000.

Last week, Belfour said he was selling part of his collection to join son, Dayn, and establish Belfour Distilleries. The business is to be based in Texas and focus on distilling bourbons and whiskeys.

A mask Belfour wore from 1992-94 with Chicago sold for $15,307. Another mask he wore with Dallas in winning the 1999 Stanley Cup title sold for $7,853.

You'd think he'd have the cash straight up.

That's pretty sad.  Yeah, what did he do with all his money?  Then again, there was that $6 billion he offered the cops to let him go one day.  Im not sure the booze business is the best place for him!

Can't believe the NHL wouldn't even look at that hit.

I'm getting a chuckle out of Dayn being the head of operations behind this whole project. I was doing colour for the Winkler Flyers broadcasts back when Dayn was playing and that kid was.....off. All goalies are a little different, to be sure, but that kid.....he was nuttier than most. Very curious how that whole distillery thing goes for them....best of luck, anyhow.

Okay, this is an Eklund rumor but seems far too specific to be completely made up.

Been chasing a slew of rumors, but I was just told by a very reliable source that Ilya Kovalchuk may be leaving Russia and signing with an NHL team before Monday's trade deadline which would make him eligible for the post season...

The source contacted me just as news broke in Russia that Kovalchuk will NOT play Games 3 or 4 in his playoff series versus Lokomotiv SKA and has been stripped of his Captaincy.

The two teams Kovalchuk would most likely be signing with are NJ and Toronto from all indications.
