Around the NHL

Catch all thread for discussing other NHL teams/news.

Up first:  Pittsburgh Penguins, my secondary team to cheer for.

I guess their worst start since Sid's rookie year could be because of their lousy defense.  Or bad coaching.  Or Kessel.

But in reality its because I took Fleury in my pool every year for 10 years until last year when I was fed up, he has his best year ever and then I took him this year and now he sucks.

But really, whats the deal?  They might be the first to can their coach.

Dennis Wideman takes out some anger on a lineman or does he?

Wow!  I heard his comments before seeing the video.  He claims he was bent over hurt and when he looked up, the linesmen was right there.  What a complete fabrication.  He intentionally hit him.  I'd suspend him the rest of the season.

I can't find a video of it but they were talking about this on the morning show.  Apparently the video angle from the other direction shows he didn't see the ref until the very last second.  It was almost as if he was mad about being checked or whatever right before and didn't even realize that was the ref there.

The other interesting point is that there was no penalty or game misconduct called on the ice which would typically happen and force a review.

Pretty good cross-check to me. Took revenge out on the wrong guy. Suspension!

I can see Ladd doing the same thing :P

Sure looks intentional to me.  Regardless, that's a suspendable offense to me.   You dont skate slowly and suddenly deliver a check like that to a player, let alone a ref.

No biggie, just the all-star game. Who was screaming about Wheels anyway?

Well Wheeler seemed disappointed he wasnt chosen.  But now that he's made plans, I dont blame him at all.

What'd I miss about Toews that he can't go...?

He's a giant *****.... No apparently he's been battling the flu or something the last while so he's skipping the allstar game.

I hear it's going around.................

Interesting breakdown on the Wideman cross check from Kerry Fraser.

Great summation.  Watching it again, Wideman's actions immediately before the hit seem to indicate surprise that there is a person in front of him even though it seems almost unbelievable that he didnt see him.  But his "finishing" the contact was deliberately.  10 games at least.

Only Wideman know's if he did this on purpose watching the game live it looked like a accident but when you look at it in slow motion after he gets hit he's dazed, gets up on his skates smacks his stick onto the ice goes along the boards hits the linesman with arms extended. Still can't assume he did it on purpose though. As for Wheeler go for him tell the NHL to stick there farce of an allstar game.

How can anyone say that hit was not intentional? Blatant even after a few re watches.

20 game suspension and the salary dollars should go to the ref

Another interesting article from a guy who both played and reffed the game with experiences on both sides.

He never expands on this tidbit, but I'd love to hear the story about when he was punched by fans in Winnipeg.  As much as I've been mad enough off at refs, that is a ridiculous thing to do.

There were several incidents where I was the victim of the abuse. That does not even count a time in the AHL where I met Andre Savard under the stands to settle our differences and Savard landed a good one. It also doesn't count being punched by fans in Winnipeg in the NHL and Moncton in the AHL.

Wideman has been suspended indefinitely,  hearing to held after the all star so the NHL is taking this incident seriously as it should.

The penalty for non-intentional striking is ten games. So he's getting that for sure. Intentional is 20. I say they split the difference and go 15

I think he did alright with the Good & Bad but the Ugly is a reach.  No one ever won the cup signing Stemp and Tlusty.  its just a myth that the Jets failed by not keeping those guys.  I thin they gambled that the youth movement would allow them to make the playoffs again (or be close enough that Chevy could bring in some help at the deadline) but I also dont think the fact it didnt work out that way is a huge surprise.  I think Jets management is able to separate emotion from this and realise competing every year is better than blowing our wad this year.

And you cant grade Chevy on the Ladd & Buff situation until it's resolved.  Period.
