Everything Soccer

We are few weeks from the Soccer World's biggest event and I know that there will be many an eyeball watching this year because Canada finally made it again. Bad news today for the Canucks as Alphonso Davies left today's match with what looked like a hamstring injury.

Let's not forget they'll be in this again in 2026

How David didnt pass it there on that one play ill never understand. Had a teammate streaking wide open down the right side with no one in from of him, yet he decides to rifle a shot into the legs of a defender. Brutal.

Also, what a TERRIBLE penalty kick by Davies. The goaltender barely had to move.

Moral victories are, as always, for the loser.

They had their chances.  But no finish. They did go toe to toe with the 3rd ranked team

Great passing and pace against a top ranked team, but 21 shots and only 3 on goal won't cut it against the European sides.

so anyone want to see the World Cup display I worked on at work?

Whoa , that was close.

Poor back end possessions by Canada and loose defending leads to 2 against.  Need to make a couple halftime adjustments for sure. I’d definitely pull Hutchinson off… He’s looked really sluggish today.

Canada had as much chance of advancing as the Jets have winning the Stanley Cup, sure it can happen but it wont be in my lifetime

The 1st  game showed we belong in the World Cup. This game showed we have a ways to go before we are any kind of a threat .

Well, that went about as expected I'd say. Canada has a long ways to go still but gotta crawl b4 we walk and then run. Right now I'd say we are crawling

Building toward 2026 at home...hopefully can at least win a game in that one. Can't help but feel this "Rah Rah Canada World Cup" was so much like the Blue Jays playoffs, or the Leafs playoffs...... anything the major national media hype up so much ends up with sad trombone. Definitely less expectation with this one, though.

thank god for home field advantage

All that work to qualify just to play 2 games & score one goal. Yep, TSN & the national media had pumped expectations of Canadians a lot higher.

They play three. And, no, no one thought they would get out of the group stage. It was remarkable to get there, as top of the CONCACAF qualifying.

FIFA opened a disciplinary case against Croatia on Tuesday because of its fans' taunts aimed at Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan, who has Serbian family ties, during the teams' World Cup game.

FIFA said the case against the Croatian soccer federation was "due to the behaviour of its fans" and cited rules relating to discrimination and security at games.

Borjan was born in an ethnic Serb region of Croatia that was part of the conflict that split the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

Borjan's family left their hometown in 1995 when it was taken by Croatian forces amid stories that ethnic Serbs fled on tractors.

During Canada's 4-1 loss Sunday, one banner displayed by Croatia fans used a flag of tractor manufacturer John Deere and changed the marketing slogan to target Borjan. The abuse was especially loud in the second half when Borjan's goal was right in front of the Croatia fans.

Borjan was 13 when his family moved to Canada — initially Winnipeg and then Hamilton a year later. He plays his club football for storied Serbian club Red Star Belgrade.

Back in the 90s I was working in a mine in the northern Canada.  We had a Croatian bull cook  ( assisted the cook, cleaned rooms..... ) in camp. He was a jovial, friendly,  always smiling, joking with everyone  guy that  everyone loved. One day the foreman  and I  were watching a foreign movie on the rec room TV ( it was a sweet camp ). It was about a family trying to get into the west from the Serbia, Macedonia,  Turkey area. Y####  had come in the room and was standing behind where we were sitting. At some point my foreman said  "  Y####  who are these people ? " There was no answer so he asked again and  we both turned and looked at him.  I can only describe  his face as a picture of hate, anger, disgust. I have seen lots of angry men but never a look of pure, utter hatred.  It was shockjng. He then literally spat out.  " They're peasants ! Dirty filthy peasants !  " and stormed off. I'm not sure what he had gone through or what his life experiences were . The Croatian war was on and he had always said he wasn't going back till the war was over.  I've met and dealt with lots of people who were racist, or anti gray, ....etc but never before or since seen a look like that. Close to terrifying.
