The Winnipeg Jets have officially added another young defenceman to their prospect pool. Declan Chisholm, 20, signed a three-year, entry-level contract Monday with an average annual value of $825,000. The deal starts in the 2020-21 season. Today was the deadline to get the product of Bowmanville, Ont., signed. Chisholm was drafted by the Jets in the fifth round (150th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft and just completed his fourth junior season with the OHL's Peterborough Petes, setting a career high for goals (13), assists (56) and points (69). Chisholm was the third-highest point-producing defenceman in the OHL.

Giovanni Vallati (2018 fifth-rounder) and Jacob Cederholm (2017 fourth-rounder) were not signed by the Central Division squad.

I finally subbed to the Athletic and I really enjoy it, especially with little sports coverage going.  Some fun Jets articles.

Murat had an article out comparing ten of the Jets prospects with current NHL'ers to try to predict what they might become and had Declan compared to Devon Toews and Vince Dunn.  He wrote:

Chisholm’s strengths are in transition, where his high-end speed and ability to move the puck up the ice help make him an excellent transporter. Once in the offensive zone, Chisholm’s offence comes from putting the puck in the hands of Peterborough’s top scorers, such as Nick Robertson. He doesn’t have a big shot from the point, nor does his 6-1, 193-pound frame push people around in the defensive zone.

I’d compare Chisholm to Devon Toews, who scored 28 points for the Islanders in his sophomore season, because of his success in the neutral zone.

Of course, the leap in league quality makes it a difficult comparison to make. Chisholm will need to maintain some of his offence and improve his defending to carve out an NHL career. Still, it seems as though there’s room in the big leagues for a player whose biggest strength is wheeling the puck up ice.

I recommend the Athletic, here's a snippet from their Declan story:

“The one thing he has, over a lot of players, is that he’s got outstanding feet and those feet are at the NHL level,” Wilson said in a telephone interview. “He’s fortunate. He’s been blessed with great feet but he has worked on it. … There was great improvement in every part of his game.”

Wilson said Chisholm averaged between 20 and 25 minutes of ice time per game and wasn’t used only in an offensive role. He had the responsibility of playing in a shutdown capacity against the other team’s best players, showing major improvement during individual battles and became much better at using his stick effectively while defending.

It figures. 
This fits right in with the kind of turnabout the Jets had to work their way through this year.

But, if it ever gets off the ground (ice?), they will have just as good a chance as anybody in the playoffs in this very interrupted season.

Going to do NHL for Sportsnet.  Sucks to lose him from CFL games but we end up with Rod Black so often anyway.  Be great to hear Cuthbert call hockey.

Because of covid?  It’s a bit curious as they are a subscription service that heavily promotes annual subs.  Should be somewhat insulated.  Seems more like they have a lot of employees and a lot less sports to cover.  Very unfortunate.

TSN and their radio stations should have gone into hibernation.

Never like seeing anyone lose their job, but Ken Wiebe just rode Murat Ates' coat tails success and abilities.

The business made the correct decision and kept Ates and removed Wiebe. That says it all. If it was dire straits Ates would be gone too. 

Ates will continue to thrive and Wiebe will never be heard from again. He's the definition of replaceable

I have never laughed so hard until these two posts. 

I've known Murat Ates since he was a baby and this is hilarious. Never mind the fact that Ken Wiebe has been a Winnipeg sports media legend for decades.......
