Unbiased Commentary

Hey Folks,

First time poster here, but been reading for a while.

Now for starters, I am a bomber fan, have been for 30+ years. I will watch every Bomber game and some of the other games,  One thing strikes me, and it dates back even further than "the catch".

Who remembers, was it Suitor shouting 'OH NO!" when Stegall hauls in the catch from Glenn?

Now I know I only want to hear positives about my "my team", but it consistently feels like the announcers are rooting against WPG the majority of the time. Its so bad, I find myself turning off the sound while watching. Anyone else feel the same, or am I making this up?

Take the Montreal game last week, Wpg gets a touchdown: "and that's a  touchdown for Winnipeg." said the announcer.

Montreal answers with a touchdown of their own " WOW, what a catch!... Blah blah blah.... Look at the placement of that throw!.... Blah blah blah... so and so walks on water.... and on and on....

They just don't seem to celebrate when Wpg is doing well.

Its like listening to Bob on CJOB, he loves the bombers and we know it you can hear that despite him trying to just "call the game" he gets excited when we do well...

Shouldn't a national broadcast be unbiased?

  • Yeah we got a soft team, that's why the Riders had a bunch of guys go down injured (not the fake ones either, legit ones)  I said it in the chat, teams take on the personality of their head coach

  • It's hard to expect everyone to be truly unbiased.  You can tell Dunigan and Stegall still love the Bombers.  I never felt that "Oh no!" by Suitor was a slight against the Bombers.  Just an honest rea

Worst part of TSN is how they pick a storyline for each game and just cannot move off it no matter what actually happens in the game.

Hughson isn't the worst guy going, but he still wears a Nucks jersey under his suit.

I was always a big fan of Romaniuk but I haven't LOVED his work since returning from England.

Randorf is actually better than I thought he'd be.

Gord Miller, I actually prefer his CFL work to NHL.

Cuthbert is the world leader both CFL and NHL and its really not even close...

Other than us having differing opinions,  I guess the only thing that would settle these differing viewpoints is actual evidence.  Lots of complexity when it comes to that, because even  comparing each of their ratings and viewership can be skewed by a few things, e.g., the importance of the game being played, the time of day the game is being played, what teams are playing etc etc.  So I continue to disagree with you based only on my observations.

You're wrong.

Meh. Not a Cuthbert fan.

More importantly, why does Rod Black still have a job? Is he secretly a high ranking Stone cutter?

I agree, Gord is surprisingly good on CFL broadcasts... what can he possible be doing during the summer that he can't do CFL?... Anything to get Rod Black off the air...

The difference is I analyze these type of things for a living, so... I win. ;)

He would improve himself a lot more if he'd shut up once in a while and just focus on doing the PBP rather than trying to add colour commentary as well.

Predictable response. :-)

Hmmm. Okay fair enough.  But I still like Hughson over Cuthbert. :-)

At the end of the day, the only thing that really actually matters is personal preference...

So, how does Black keep his job even though he is reviled by most CFL fans?

He is hated by many message board users but not so sure that is true of the cfl fanbase in general.

What does that suggest of the cfl fanbase in general?

That they watch the game and don't spend time painstakingly analyzing the announcers?

Rod Black ruins every game he commentates. I don't ask for much from a PBP guy but literally silence is better than him. He doesn't know the rules of football, obsesses over silly nicknames that he makes up, frequently gets players names wrong and obsesses over terms like pistol formation and hook and ladder play which I don't believe he actually knows the definition of. He is a complete and utter buffoon.

They're pretty good about being unbiased. It sounds like you just want to hear pro-Bombers talk, so anything less than that is biased toward the other team, in your eyes (ears?).... Just relax... Enjoy the game for what it is.

that's how my Mom and Aunt feel when they listen to Rod Black, I try to explain they want to only hear positives  about the Bombers but generally I feel they are pretty fair. Part of their job is hyping up big plays and making people excited about spectacular catches as well as talking up stars to make people more familiar with the stars in the league.

I do feel like the Bombers are overshadowed quite often and think our guys don't get the same spotlight a lot of other teams get.
