A 39-year-old man has been charged in connection with several sexual assaults that occurred at the West Edmonton Mall World Waterpark over the weekend.

Police were called to the waterpark at around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Officers allege a man followed and inappropriately touched six teenage girls while they were swimming at the waterpark 

“It’s fairly shocking,” EPS spokesperson Scott Pattison said. “It’s involved and traumatized six individuals and their families.”

Pattison said all six girls were under the age of 16.

“The girls were very courageous in coming forward and talking to the lifeguard, that’s not always the case,” Pattison said.

Soleiman Hajj Soleiman, a Syrian refugee and father of six, has since been charged with six counts of sexual assault and six counts of sexual interference.

So he was helping them on the slide then.

Topic title makes it sound like we are expecting more.

Sexual assault happens every day but it is rarely newsworthy, why is this case any different?  Typical "see, I told you so" story.  Should I protect my children from water-parks or Syrian refugees???

Look what's going on in Europe.  I would say that you should start at water-parks, and protect them from everyone.

Sure, I'd be very aware of the surroundings if I took my kids to any waterpark.  But the topic title you chose wasnt about being careful at waterparks. 

I agree though, we need better vetting of refugees.  They should be interviewed by psychics to weed out those that might commit a crime in the future.  Wasnt that a Tom Cruise film?

A whole lot of stuff is being covered up (more so in the East of Canada) where their is a lot of issues with Syrian boys at school and the Men treating women terribly.      Lots of stuff the media isn`t covering.

I`m amazed the feminists have not attacked this yet since many of the refugees are trying to impose their behavior here in Canada which is terrible towards women.

Well ive argued the point about Sharia law and the practice of Islam but others here like to shout it down.  Cultural diversity is wonderful up to a point where it crosses beyond Canadian standards.

The point though is that from what I've seen, the illegals committing the crimes are people that have been caught and sent back over the border multiple times.  There doesn't seem to be any way to stop illegals from coming back over the border and so the Border patrol in the US feels helpless.

This is what everyone is dancing around here, and why people have posted the questions to you they have.  The wording of this thread title is ... this is the first, implying there will be more.  If there will be more, well how do we stop it, etc, tc.

The next question is why do we not post about every sexual assault that happens in this country, why is this one singled out?

Is it a horrendous crime?  Yes.   Should people like this be allowed in the country?   No.   So, are you suggesting all Syrian's shouldn't be allowed in Canada because we now have a "first" Syrian refugee who did this?

If tomorrow an immigrant from Ireland does this, are you going to post a thread saying "First Sexual Assault by an Irish Immigrant in Canada"?  Probably not.

So yes, this is a tragedy and shouldn't happen.   Lock the guy up and / or throw him out of the country.   The title you chose frames it in a certain light, and it makes people question the motivation of the thread.

Nope.  I guess I just wanted to post this as it doesn't seem to be getting much attention, and I am curious as to why.  When you look at what's going on in Europe right now, with all of the sexual attacks at swimming pools, perhaps people in Canada need to be aware about them, or perhaps not, I don't know.  It's been interesting to see the reaction though to this story on various forums I follow.  A lot of visceral reactions and anger that this is even being reported on by anyone, with the excuse that other sex crimes aren't reported on so why is this one making head-lines (though I think six girls being molested by one guy in one day is pretty news-worthy).  Is that right, to just cover these stories up completely and not talk about them at all?  I don't know the answer to that one, so that's why we discuss these things.

Dont pretend you're just posting an interesting story about sex assaults at a water park.   You posted this specifically as a commentary on a Syrian refugee without explaining your point.

I would be in favour of a Trump-style immigration ban.

I tried to stick with neutral sites (no Breitbart or Huffington Post).  Seems there are issues but not surprising considering the amount of refugees they have in Europe.  And not overly terrible perhaps even overblown going by a few of the stories I read.

Fair enough.  I have no problem with discussing the news item, and I can't speak for other forums, but I think if your thread title had even said Sexual Assault from Syrian Refugee, you wouldn't have received the same reaction as you did here.

Part of the issue is that the media doesn't seem to want to cover these attacks.  Or the only sites that cover it are ones deemed to be "fake news" by certain elements and so therefore potentially they are just made up.  So it's a self-fulfilling prophecy - the media that is "trusted" won't report it, so therefore there is doubt as to whether it exists.  Case in point - it doesn't appear that the Edmonton molestation story has been reported by the CBC.  Is this because they deem it not newsworthy?  Or are there other reasons?  Is this willful blindness to cover these stories (if this indeed is happening) beneficial to society and the greater good?  I am just asking the question.
