Justin Dunk 3downnation -Zach Collaros has proved why Hamilton paid him $1.5 million on a fresh three-year contract. The 28-year-old has 1,510 yards and 14 touchdowns in four games. Extrapolate those numbers over 18 regular season games: 6,795 passing yards and 63 touchdowns. Those are figures that have never been reached by a CFL quarterback. -Rakeem Cato in for Kevin Glenn One CFL source on the quarterback change: “You know Jim Popp is going to blame someone not named Popp.” ?‍?Yeah, I thought Milanovich missed one by skirting that challenge... Donnovan Bennett -Sportsnet Diontae Spencer made a diving catch on an under-thrown ball when the Argos were driving down three with just over seven minutes to go. Replays showed Spencer got his hands underneath the ball despite the ruling on the field being incomplete. But Scott Milanovich didn’t challenge. The Bombers overcame 5 injuries. We deserved that game. The Bombers are now an incredible +23 in the turnover ratio, having forced 25 turnovers in the last five games. 120: Consecutive pass attempts by Nichols without throwing an interception. - Ed Tait Good article by Thomas Gunther - lastwordoncanadianfootball.com poor execution - see article Mental errors - the Riders have been become known for shooting themselves in the foot at the worst of times. A big play overturned by a bonehead penalty, an interception tossed in the red zone, or trying to lay a big hit rather than wrap up and allowing a big gain. All of these mental errors are commonplace for the Green and White this season. What should be especially concerning for the team is that these were exactly the type of things that the hiring of Chris Jones was to supposed to eliminate. The excuse that the team is young and developing is a tired and frankly unacceptable reason for the Riders’ litany of gaffes through 12 weeks. This team is building for next year, but there is a much deeper problem than inexperience that Jones and Co. have to root out if 2017 is to be any different. Flawed Play Calling - see http://lastwordoncanadianfootball.com/2016/09/11/losing-roughriders-face-another-lost-season/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter Darren Cameron In all my years here I don't think I've heard the players mention the fans so often post game. Gary Lawless Willy was excellent. Lapo told me that on the field on Saturday. No issues. O'Shea had a tough time signing off Ed Tait For a bunch of reasons, salary cap, 2017 contracts and such we just felt it was time to make the move,” said Walters. “Could we have kept Drew on for the rest of this year as our No. 2? Certainly. But I think it would have been just delaying a very difficult decision moving into next year.” ?‍?True that Willy was a distraction..somewhat, but maybe only to us fans. Tait: Those acquired picks are important picks for a club that has completely turned around a horrible draft history from 2012-2013. Consider that four players from its 2016 draft class are on the roster in Trent Corney, Michael Couture, Taylor Loffler and Shayne Gauthier – with Loffler now the starting safety. The lineup also features eight selections from the 2014 and 2015 classes earning paycheques in starting centre Matthias Goossen (second overall, 2014), Jesse Briggs (second round, 2014), Derek Jones (third round, 2014) and starting right guard Sukh Chungh (first round, 2015), Addison Richards (second round, 2015), Brendan Morgan (second round, 2015), Chris Normand (fourth round, 2015) and Garrett Waggoner (supplemental draft, forfeiting 2016 first rounder) Clare Kines Just realized that with that Willy trade the @Wpg_BlueBombers have the top 3 interception leaders in the #CFL. @almighty31, Fogg & Heath. 3. If you look at our options...and that's all that really matters, I'm quite a bit more confident that Glenn would step in and do a more than adequate job. I couldn't really say the same thing if Willy was still our backup. We just didn't know...
  4. It's a trade of opportunity and the timing was perfect, notwithstanding the upcoming game vs Toronto. It's perfect because the Argos were interested anyways, then they got antsy over Ray, they have just lost 4 in a row, crowds were down and Barker twitched. They may get something out of Willy that we couldn't, but we extricated ourselves from a sticky situation that had a built in timer ticking in Walters head. i.e. no trade value the closer it came to Willy's next year contract. Walters just had to figure out the backup situation and Popp delivered that when he demoted Kevin Glenn. The mist of an idea was solidifying in Walters brain. Ray's injury, Glenn's demotion, the question of facing Willy's return all came together and today we are better for it. Great Bomber trade.
  5. Strictly Nichols. There is no 'vs.' If you could have thought of a scenario where you could choose a viable backup, at a decent cost, and not disrupt the mojo, these trades probably fit the bill. The fact that we got a starter and some worthy picks is pure bonus.
  6. Bang bang...Walters calmly walks down the CFL trade street brandishing a smile, loaded six guns and outDrew two trading partners.
  7. I'm pretty sure Nichols is following the drawn up game plan to a 'T'. What he does best, is read, and get rid of the ball quickly, often with good results. If Willy, in the past, was able to do that, Nichols would still be on the bench. We don't know if Willy would play better now. I suspect he would. He needed this break, physically and mentally. I agree that Nichols is playing it close to the vest, in regards to turnovers. You open it up more, you become susceptible to more picks. I've seen the dropped 'potential' interceptions. They happen to all QBs throughout the league. They are not regular enough to be a constant concern. I do not count balls knocked down or deflected at the line of scrimmage balls to be potential interceptions. These blocks also happen all the time to any one of the 'elite' QBs. It's few and far between when they are actually intercepted. I'm not going to knock Nichols for those. Bombers are currently 5 th in T.O.P. They were, for the longest time in the top 3 in that stat. Undoubtedly, we must be better in the offensive category, and it starts with Nichols. Actually, it starts with LaPo. He puts together what we must do against the teams we play with who we have, usually with different receivers every game. It's unfortunate we haven't got a Derel Walker, or a Bowman or a Roosevelt, an Arceneaux etc. Guys who dominate and can change a game with any one play. Missing a guy like that limits what a guy like Nichols can do. He is only as good as the players and game plan he has to work with. But, a guy like Nichols and a defence that we've been presented with, mixed in with solid STs has given us a 6 game game winning streak. I don't care who we have played. We beat them and were not part of any of their winning streaks. Future games against future opponents have to be dealt with as they arise..
  8. All 3 star positions. The Happy Honker Award. The "I'm-very-sorry-on-behalf-of-the-special-teams" apology, should all go to Kevin Fogg for missing out on his THIRD return for a TD this year. No wonder O'Shea was more than pissed.
  9. This talented receiver, and he is, has got problems upstairs. There is no way he fits into what O'Shea wants in a team member. As a matter of fact, unless Carter has a huge self-reflection, he is going to lose ANY team's trust and faith. With his talent, he should be in the NFL. But he isn't, for a reason. You have to read Justin Dunk's article to get a better handle on it. http://3downnation.com/2016/09/09/montreal-receiver-duron-carter-worst-teammate-ever/ They are not the same team, mentally and physically. They are playing defeated. Glenn was sharp early and we certainly weren't. For that matter, we are not the same team either, physically and mentally.
  10. Pre-game talk "Pissed off." That's O'Shea's answer to "how's special teams"? "They see simple solutions that they've been doing consistently since training camp, and they're not pleased. But they also recognize that these are corrections they can make. They don't feel out-gunned." "At all." I totally love how Mike OShea put to rest the idea that our punter out-kicked the coverage in last week's game. It's something I don't believe in myself and when he was asked, O'Shea said it was a coverable kick. He stated "I will never talk about out-kicking our coverage." On the Medlock punt, he simply said, "He pounded it...get down and cover it" Then he said "We'll cover any kick".
  11. Oh, the other idiot.. Must be mad or somethin'...
  12. ?‍?Rakeem Cato vs Jonathan Jennings Jim Popp vs Wally Buono OK I've seen enough already. How can we expect help from Montreal when we see a start like that? ?‍?Well, Montreal does have the best Red Zone Defence in the league, and the best tackler in Bear Woods. BC had to try 7 FGs the last time they played, making 5. Of course,,people will counter that BC has the next two best tacklers in Elimimian and Bighill, but they're just quibbling. OK then, Tyrell Sutton is back as the RB and last week produced a season-high 71 yards averaging 7.1 per carry. He has 104 yards on 20 carries since returning from the Injured List. Is that enough? Duron Carter is back. What else? Well, OC Anthony Calvillo is pissed and wants the offence to click better. That echoes what their main pass catcher, Nic Lewis, is saying. Oh yeah, Ronnie Yell is out with an injury, so that should help. Also, BC is concerned with their O-Line, so if Noel Thorp's boys can have themselves a game.... Special teams will be so very important to both teams as well. CFL.ca stats By the Numbers 23% – Red zone conversion rate against Montreal’s defence; the Als are the stoutest red zone defence in the league. 26-9 – BC’s lead in the all-time series between the Lions and Als in Vancouver. Home field advantage? 50.6 – BC kicker Richie Leone’s current average yardage on a punt, tied with Jon Ryan’s all-time CFL record. 74 – League-leading tackles recorded by Montreal linebacker Bear Woods Go Montreal!
  13. CFL - Game Notes The CFL began recording 2nd down conversion catches in 2009 and since then no player has matched Nik Lewis’ production. In 2016 he leads the CFL with 25 receptions for first downs on 2nd down plays – 37% of his 67 receptions have produced key first downs. DOWN CONVERSION CATCHES CFL LEADERS – FROM 2009 TO 2016: Nik Lewis 153 Weston Dressler 142 Andy Fantuz 141 Adarius Bowman 133 Marquay McDaniel 126 Over the last six games, the Alouettes have stopped the opposition 13 times out of 17 chances in the Red Zone allowing only 4 TDs for a remarkable 23% rate. For the year, Montreal is #1 by far at 41% with opponents cashing just 11 of 27 opportunities into TDs. The Alouettes have allowed the fewest touchdowns of any club giving up just 20 in 10 games. They have allowed no more than 2 TDs to any opponent over the last 4 games and only 16 opponent offensive TDs in 2016. Elimimian & Bighill: Through games of Sep 5/16 the ‘BC 100’ pair rank #2 & #3 in defensive tackles. Solomon Elimimian has 70 after a CFL season-high and BC Lions record 14 tackles at Toronto last Wednesday. Bighill has 67 defensive stops in 2016 and thus each is on pace for over 100 tackles in 2016. They have combined for 53 tackles in the last three Lions’ games. No team has ever had two players reach 100+ tackles in the same season
  14. And don't forget who we're playing this weekend..
  15. Being a BC guy, wouldn't that be - Bomber by 14. At an eliminimum?
  16. Hey, you tried your best, and you .... ?sometimes , I read signatures...
  17. I would say, see his signature..(rhymes with gurple)
  18. John Hodge 3downnation Allow me to publicly apologize to Justin Medlock for this comment made in reference to the value of his contract. The 32-year-old has now made 33 of 38 field goals this season with a long of 58 yards. He’s been worth every penny of his big-ticket free agent contract. That's an egregious, abhorrent overpay for an American kicker. -It was nice to see Matt Nichols open things up more than he had in previous weeks, hitting Quincy McDuffie for an 82-yard touchdown early in the game. Nichols is at his best when he focuses on managing the game, but it’s critical that he’s also able to air it out when necessary. With Ryan Smith expected to return to the line-up next week, it will be interesting to see if Nichols throws the deep ball more often with an elite deep threat at his disposal.

  20. Kirk Penton Just for the record, we will stop talking about the officiating when CFL fans, coaches and players stop talking about it. INSIDERS SAY -I hired a damn good assistant coach about 10 years ago. He was hurting my staff, though, because he had a drinking problem. I fired him after the year because he wouldn’t admit he had a drinking problem. What am I saying? We have an officiating problem. We need to admit it and fix it, or fire the causes of the problem and any people who are hesitant to make big changes in that group ... -Every week I look at the film, and I’m less sure what is and isn’t pass interference or illegal contact. It’s like flipping a (bleeping) coin. All I know is what my wife says. (The officials) are on TV more than any of us who are coaching ... -I’m the kind of coach who just focuses on who we’re playing next. But one of my guys who’s tapped into all of the gossip says Noel Thorpe will be interim head coach in Montreal before the end of this month and Danny Maciocia will be their head coach next year ... -I don’t know what the Bombers paid (Justin) Medlock, but he’s worth every (bleeping) penny ... -I’ve coached with Scott (Milanovich), and he’s a damn good coach. (Jim) Barker’s pretty good at what he does, too. But something’s wrong in Toronto. Look at their record over the last three or four years. The year they won it all they went 9-9 and got hot at the end. This year, with the crossover deal, they might not make the playoffs ... -We’re hoping Montreal beats B.C., but that’s probably a (bleeping) dream. (Kevin) Glenn is too old. That’s why (Rakeem) Cato is going to start, and they have too many other old guys on that Als team whose best days are long gone.t
