I'd be interested in how many of the 50 beds for mental health services added to Victoria hospital are just re-allocated beds. Sad that mental health issues weren't given more attention considering how ill-equipped hospitals, especially ERs, are to treat mental health issues and yet they see so many. I know I'm biased, but I think addressing mental health-related visits would go a long way to improving services overall.

Agreed. Laugh tracks are a relic of the past. Formulaic jokes followed by canned laughter.
Arrested Development and 30 Rock are two of the best shows ever made.

And mix into that formula the easy access to alcohol and drugs, rising addictions and untreated mental health issues.

dropping the number of NIs starting/ on the roster just hurts long term development of NIs. Less starting spots/spots less in the league, less spots for college kids, less draw from young kids at the grass roots level. Just when we are finally getting a fertile NI draft too.
Its the canadian football league, thats why. Why not just adopt all american rules, field, players etc. The cfl is a cultural institution. Its heritage. Its not money-centric like the nfl. Its not a league you tune into the championship game to watch the commercials and half time show for.
Severing those ties to a hundred years of tradition and becoming a poor mans nfl is a good way to kill off the league. Cus if you are just gonna be the nfl light, why not just watch the nfl.

Thanks for the response, Atomic.  I agree with you that the Quebec City attack and the Pulse Nightclub attack (and attacks like the Ecole Polytechnic attack and the Nathan Cirillo attack as well, and lots of others) are all of the same coin. They're all hate crimes, or terrorism if you like -- crimes intended to terrify a tightly knit minority, to hit them where they feel safe, and to radicalize both the attacked community and people sympathetic to the attackers.
I also agree that calling him "radicalized" is a bit of a tactic -- but believe me, my intention is not to shut you down.  When I say "how did this guy get radicalized" what I'm really saying is "I'm scared that there are more of this guy out there, and that guys like him represent a threat that's comparable to the threat from Islamist / Sikh / whatever terrorists, and that investigating the places the produce a guy like this is a worthwhile use of law enforcement resources."  Do you think that's a reasonable/correct stance?
When I said "radicalized," TUP immediately popped up to say "Can't he just be a regular old racist violent loser?" and I want to kick against that idea a little bit, against the immediate narrative that this guy was just some loser whose alpha-bits spelled out the wrong message one morning. Because there are signs that something dark and terrible is organizing; white-on-nonwhite violence in the USA is spiking right now and the President is pussyfooting with white supremacists.
Maybe this is more of an immediate terror in the USA, where the white supremacists are well armed and have symbols and traditions and are very difficult to prosecute.  Sometimes they even have official power -- there was an awful recent case about a Louisiana sheriff whose department did some heinous, heinous things to some black folks and totally skated on a jury trial.  And as a proud (if long-absent) Canadian I kinda despair that that kinda **** is being exported northward.
Yeah.  Terrorism wins when the bystanders are radicalized.  So I agree, our response to terrorism should not be to radicalize more people, even hypothetical people.
Are there any egregious examples of this kind of persecution in Canada?  I don't doubt there are, it's just that I'm not 100% up on my Canadian news. The case that comes to mind for me is the Brendan Eich case in Silicon Valley.

Please stop with these kinds of comments.  They do no good to anyone, and only engender more bickering that does no good, and just shuts down discussion.  I think I've managed to cut these kinds of comments out (if not, please let me know) and I think we all deserve respectful responses here.

Do you ever actually comment on the topic at hand?  Are posts like this actually necessary?  I'm just curious.   If you really want to attack me with these kinds of posts, why not just inbox me, rather than putting this on the actual thread? What is it that you want to accomplish with this post exactly?  I am asking because Rich asked us to be civil, and here I am trying so hard, and am just getting posts like this as a response.  Shame on you guys.  This is really sad.

Election is over, thread locked.   I'm sure this will get picked up in a new thread at some point
Have let a lot go in this thread, probably more than we should have.  Politics can be a rather passionate and volatile subject for some people, but that is no excuse for insults and behaving like children.  Going to be cracking down on the crap that has been going on in these parts, need to put a stop to it.
Locking this thread was easier then cleaning most of it up.

LOL - now THAT is actually probably both true and funny.  I honestly think this thread has run its course, all there is left here is one extremely angry person who wants to barf up leftist fear-mongering nonsense, and me, who is barfing up Trump defense (though all I really am saying is that I want to actually see what he does as president before judging him, which I know is CRAZY I guess).

I was watching CNN tonight and Van Jones, the outspoken Democrat on the panel, was going on about how Muslims are now scared they are going to be put in internment camps.  Kind of like some of the rhetoric we were seeing earlier here today.  The rest of the panel actually turned on him and said to stop with the divisive comments, as they really help no one, and are really based in nothing more than sour grapes by Democrats.  I thought Obama was really classy today (and Hillary too) in their speeches.  They along with Trump are calling for peace and a calm transition.  I don't see why that's a bad thing.
I also saw some extremely interesting voting stats.  States like Pennsylvania went Republican for the first time in 28 years. I guess Hillary just ignored Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania during her campaign, assuming that they were in bag.  Also, the stats about women voters was telling.  Women just did not turn up to support Hillary at all, their numbers were way down compared to 2008 and 2012 for Obama.  Also telling were states like Michigan where the African American voters just didn't show up.  If they had showed up at all in Detroit, Hillary would have carried Michigan easily.  So for all of the talk of how minorities were all voting for Hillary, this actually didn't happen.  If they are all so "terrified" as Van Jones claims they are, then why did they not show up to vote, or if they did, why did they vote for Trump?  Maybe, just maybe, there were other issues at play here than just some offensive statements.  Maybe, just maybe, there are even bigger issues dearer to the hearts of Americans.  But I'm just spit-balling here.

In some ways I couldn't agree more, the problem I have is that you don't seem to practice what you preach. Apply your own advice to the Alberta NDP and federal Liberals and I may actually want to be a part of this thread more often.
I don't want to pile on you, so I'll also say that I think that much of the anti-Trump crowd is also going overboard with their apocalyptic fears (not people here, just reactions I've seen elsewhere).

All these people have been replaced by robots. American manufacturing has been on a steady climb, yet, there are no new jobs. Why? Because they don't need people like they used to.
He can rip up trade agreements but it won't bring any jobs back.
Unfortunately, the economists and journalists that raised this were ignored by the right and the left. His sound bites became the focus. That and emails.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will have reversed many previous decisions, including Roe vs Wade and gay marriage.
These are things that he ran on.
