McManus supposedly a Drew Willy supporter
JuranBoldenRules replied to Mr. Perfect's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
This is all part part of the negotiation process. Patience.I'm well aware how negotiations work, but being a rebuilding team, a 39 year old QB come training camp needs us a hell of a lot more than we need it. The money can better be used elsewhere. On what exactly? QB is easily the most important position and biggest need for the Bombers.I'm not disputing that it is our biggest need. That being said the goal of a franchise is to year in and year out be a championship contender. At 39 years old, Burris does not give you that. This is about the bigger picture. You can do both, and that's what Walters is working towards. It's not short term OR long term.Walters is working to build a competitive team for next season (Burris etc) and long term (Willy). Again, I'm aware of that, but I think it would be a shame if bickering with Henry over X amount of dollars ends up costing us someone like Henoc. I'd be more than happy to go into the season with Willy as our QB. Sure he may not have the statistical season Burris may have in 2014, but you have your long term QB and you accelerate his development in the process.I'm confident signing Burris will have no impact on our ability to sign Henoc. And I just don't see your logic of going with Willy in 2014 when we can get Burris to fill in for a couple years to allow Willy to develop and to fix the OL.The Bombers need to win NOW. Now isn't the time to be developing another QB. Ticket sales would plummet and set the franchise back even further. Burris and Willy give the Bombers the best of both worlds. Under your logic you want to give up on Burris because he's taking a few days to make a decision and get a few more dollars out of the Bombers. I don't understand your logic, it's very short-sighted. On the contrary I would argue your logic is very short sighted. Why do the Bombers need to win now? They don't need to necessarily win now, and frankly to expect them to win now is a bit foolish. Walters has a massive mess to fix in front of him. What they do need to do in the immediate term is be respectable on the field, something that can be done without Henry Burris. As I said before, the goal of any franchise is to be a championship contender consistently. Signing Henry Burris does not do this. The only thing signing Henry Burris does is MAYBE if you're lucky get you to 7-11 or 8-8 this year. Starting Drew Willy accelerates his development and his him even more ready for 2015/2016 than he would be when Burris is gone when this team is finally ready to contend if the powers that be play their cards right. My logic has NOTHING to do with giving up on Burris because he's taking his time to decide. My logic has to do with the fact that between now and whenever he makes his decision the dollars on the table are bound to go up with all the teams he is negotiating with. That money can be better spent elsewhere on more LONG TERM investments that will go towards making the Bombers a championship calibre team year in and year out. I truthfully do not care if we lose out on Henry Burris. I do not see him as some big prize. What I do care about is having the money tied up in a band-aid solution for a couple of extra wins when that money could better be used towards players we are interested in retaining from our free agent crop, or signing free agents that would be long additions such as a Josh Bourke, Shea Emry, Craig Butler, or a Nick Moore just to name a few. All of those players would be MUCH smarter, long term additions than a soon to be 39 year old QB with a shaky track record at best looking for one final pay check that isn't going to bring us any closer to being a consistent Grey Cup contender. You don't get it. If Bombers don't start winning some games now, our new stadium is going to max out at 22-25k fans per game. How's that going to impact the long term sustainability of the team. If we don't start winning we will never attract free agents. And do you honestly think Bourke, Butler or Moore are coming to Winnipeg? They aren't. The Burris short term and Willy longer term strategy is a sound one. The short term success Burris will help us obtain will help us in the long term. It will make us a respectable organization once again, in the eyes of outsiders. The Bombers and this new regime need to build for sustainable success. Even with Burris, we're miles behind Saskatchewan, Calgary and BC. Burris went 2-6 against the West last season with a better team than we'll have, 1 win each over BC and Edmonton. There's almost no chance we get a home playoff game. While Burris is leading our team, we gain nothing in terms of developing a QB who could possibly be our franchise QB. QB's develop by playing in games and getting meaningful practice reps. They don't get that when they are 2-3-4 on a depth chart, especially behind a guy like Burris. Burris has made it pretty clear in his last two stops that he is not interested in mentoring young QB's, he's interested in being an undisputed starting QB. So we waste a year on Burris, win 6 games (assuming things go reasonably well) and we're right back where we started at this time in 2015. No answers at the QB position. This is the time to toss the legitimate prospects out there and find a QB. Our team is going to be bad anyways, and there are no expectations for this upcoming season, we should be building towards being a playoff team in the West in 2015, and a Grey Cup contender in 2016. -
But I've heard of him before!!! And he was in Montreal, every player they have is great! And he had more success then Hall, Goltz and Elliott and whoever else you want to start for our team... He won 3 POW's?!?! His first two starts were disasters, lost the gig to Marsh. Marsh got knocked out with the elbow injury, took over again, 2 awful starts, 2 good ones, 1 so-so Troy Smith takes over. I don't know how anyone who watched him play would rate him as good, or even a guy who has potential to be good. His arm is BRUTAL. The only QB's who started last season that had worse QB ratings were Goltz and Marsh.

Winnipeg trades Kito to BC for Korey Banks
JuranBoldenRules replied to Mike's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
we've been over this before though, it's debatable whether or not the guy is in fact a quality starting OL AND it wasn't just a 2nd round pick, we gave the riders an allstar player to help them on their grey cup run as well. The allstar player should have been enough, this is Brendan Taman we're talking about here. But he started games before...so he's a starting OL...with a broken leg that didn't heal right the first time. -

Geroy went for an import receiver with man boobs, cut in training camp by the Lions, and a 3rd rounder. Banks is probably worth a 4th or 5th rounder. If we think Poblah is worth the same or less, it's a good trade for us. Clearly BC sees something in Poblah, otherwise they would have just taken a pick, which would cost them much less. -
Would actually much rather have Neiswander over Willy, so I'd be good with this, but the lack of QB depth we have/would have is scary. What actually worries me the most is how badly this organization is viewed, it's crippling the organization in a lot of ways. Neiswander is worse than Hall. Terrible arm.

You're right. His contain work on punt cover could be worth a couple wins on its own. -

Jessuz, really. I sure hope not. 8 wins would be a tremendous season for us. More realistically, I think we win 5-6, regardless of whether QB is Burris, Hall or Willy. All of them are the worst QB in our division by a long shot, at least Willy and Hall still have room to improve. We won 1 game against the West last season. Burris won 2. Coaching should be better, but we're also inexperienced and moving to a division with the 3 best teams in the league. Unless we sweep the East, it's hard seeing this team being anywhere close to .500. -

I'd be fine with Willy and Hall battling for reps, maybe ask Barker what it would take to pry Trevor Harris out of Toronto depending on how ready they feel Gale and Portis are to backup Ray. No need for Burris, we're going to suck this season either way. -

Did they re-sign Foster? I hope we don't. -

Everyone should probably keep in mind that while Poblah had potential, he also had a contract that was nowhere near what he is actually worth. The two kind of balance out into an average piece. Poblah was making over 100k a year. And BC wanted him. It'll be interesting to see what Poblah can do in an environment that develops players if he can stay healthy. -
I've heard Glen Suitor say his name before, so he's probably good.

While not overly impressive, Ottawa still has a pretty decent staff, some of whom would have been more than welcomed here. If you were talking Edmonton, then yeah............. I'd love Mike Gibson as a OL coach. Other than that, pretty average to meh and inexperienced.

Collaros Released, Signs With Hamilton
JuranBoldenRules replied to Jpan85's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Great. Six wins and wasting all those meaningful first team practice and game reps wasted on a 39 year old. I'd rather keep Hall as the starter. The way I see it is Burris adds 3 wins, and the loss of Burke and his stupid decisions adds another 3 wins. That gives us 9 wins, which I think is realistic with Burris at QB. 12 games against the West (1-7 vs those teams last year, Burris 2-6 against those teams last year) this season. With Ricky Ray at QB, 9 wins is realistic for us. -

Ottawa's staff is truly impressive Not hard to put together a staff when nobody on it is in demand. I happy O'Shea at least attempted to land some guys and then had to settle.

The salary cap is almost 5 million, not 500,000. Why is there this constant notion on Bomber message boards that the Bombers can not afford more than one good player? I don't understand. Plus we can slash payroll to sign whoever we want. There seems to be this notion that teams need to be under the SMS limit at all times (like the NHL cap) too. -

Based on what? He was at the helm of a team that won six games in 2012. Granted Hamilton's defence was terrible that year, but right now ours isn't much better. Compared to the Ticats D in 2012? Our D is light years ahead of that train wreck. Really? Whatever you're smoking I want. Our defence this past season is a group that allowed 585 points last year (Hamilton allowed 576 in 2012), had no single player with more than two interceptions last year, and had a stretch of three weeks (weeks three through five to be exact) where they allowed over 1000 passing yards, had seven touchdown passes against, 0 picks, and QB's had a completion percentage of 85.7 per cent. Lay off on the blue and gold kool-aid sport. And made Bo Levi Mitchell look like Bo Levi Montana in his first CFL start. -

Must be why two teams have been so eager to replace him within the last three seasons. -

I also wonder how much our OL factored into this decision. Our offense doesn't have a pocket, it has a killing floor. On the bright side, as we get our OL issues sorted out, it will be Burris taking that punishment, instead of some prized youngster like Mike Reilly who is the Future of the Franchise. Hamilton's OL is worse. -

JuranBoldenRules replied to Jpan85's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Right. Because the franchise gained instant respectability the moment the old guard was ushered out, and the new guard ushered in. It doesn't work that way. We have to live with the fallout of the sins of Kelly, Mack, and Burke for as long as it takes us to show ourselves to the rest of the league as a destination; not a burial ground. A bigger problem than the credibility of the current regime is the fact that we've been changing regimes every couple seasons. -
That will be an adventure on gameday, and they only have 2 other defensive coaches. Defense is coached when offence is on the field, when the head coach needs to be locked in to make decisions on short-yardage and special teams. Hard to see how that's going to work without some part of the game being neglected.

Guess we'll find out if the CFL fines the Als and take away their 1st round pick. They have way too many veterans making big dough to fit that in while staying under the SMS limit. -
Properly maintained grass is best for any field sport. The properly maintained part is the key, it's expensive and difficult. Personally, I hated playing on field turf for football. I find that when it is dry, it tends to grab your feet in, making you worry about torquing your upper body without your lower body following, snap goes the ACL. When it was raining or snowing, the moisture would sit in the field and it was like standing on a mattress. I hated playing on terribly maintained grass fields worse than anything though, the U of M field was the absolute worst. Basically just a mud patch. Nomads was pretty bad too, but usually at least had some grass between the hashes. There are no shoes for that.

I don't think he does feel as strongly as some people do either, but that's only cause some people seem to think Collaros is a sure fire starter. It's still a risk because he's still unproven, but if you think he's the best unproven guy on the market then you go for him cause there's no good experienced options out there. They also have a pretty good backup in Trevor Harris, and a prospect they've been developing for a couple years in Gale. They are well insulated.
