Always take BPA. Most of these players are years away from playing in the NHL, especially defensemen. Who knows what your needs will be down the road.

Don't think so. In fact, even if a player ends the year in the AHL, I believe he is considered back in the NHL to start the next season and must clear waivers if he is sent down again.

Carlyle retired after Teemu's rookie season, and I believe Teemu held off one more year after that before switching to #8. The thing is, that rookie year was very special, and a lot of people will always associate him with #13 (me included).

Most people and pundits tend to think the Jets are unlikely to make the playoffs again next year. Even if you don't, many would argue that Pav isn't good enough for you to be a good playoff team. With both of those in mind, this is the order I would try to deal with the goalies: Trade Pav if you can. Would even retain $1 - 2M for his last year if it makes him more attractive as a backup. Trade Hutch if you can. You are probably only getting a 5 - 7th round pick for him. If you can't trade either of them, re-sign Hutch as an RFA and send him down at the end of training camp where he is less likely to be picked up on waivers. Let him backup Comrie for the year. We've seen what Hutch can do. I think an NHL backup is his ceiling, so I'm not so concerned about him getting less playing time with the Moose. Comrie's development is more important. I'm fine with either Helle/ Pav or Helle/ Hutch for next season. Going back to Pav / Hutch would be pointless IMO. Neither is the future and what more can Helle learn with the Moose.

Realistically, who is going to trade a top 10 pick for a late first and early second? Would you make that trade if you were wearing the other GM hat?

Points over 60 minutes played where the minutes are not PP or PK. It is used to measure points per minute and not penalize people on the PK or give the advantage to people who get PP time. A stat to use in conjunction with others.

It can be done but there is a cap penalty if you do, so it isn't done often. Where in the last CBA they let you buy out 2 contracts that wouldn't count against the cap.

Interesting article from Willie Mitchell of the Florida Panthers. He is out with the 7th concussion of his career at the age of 38 (39 later this month). http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/panthers-mitchell-talks-concussions-future-hockey/ He claims no one will speak publicly, but in the locker room, the players want the NHL to crack down and dish out more severe penalties to head shots. I'm all for harsher suspensions, but you have to wonder where the NHLPA stands on this. It seems that almost any suspension that is more then 5 - 10 games is appealed. They chose (or Raffi chose) not to appeal the Torres suspension earlier this year for 41 games for a head shot. Yet they appealed the Wideman hit on referee Don Henderson who is still out with a concussion. Players want harsher discipline for this dirty stuff in the game, stop appealing suspensions.

Whats the point of having a draft of American players when they will all want to exhaust their NFL chances before even considering coming up North? The exact reason you give for Canadians is the exact reason it won't work for Americans. How many rounds of drafting do you want and how do you want to handle the players that don't get drafted?

Rumours were that Red was going to retire. Possibility that Kyle goes back for one more to win the championship. I still expect him to sign but with Red coming back, it may make him think twice.

The problem with this is that there are so many fringe NFLers, how many rounds are there going to be? What happens to the players who inevitably don't get drafted. Neg list system is there for a reason. Impractical for CFL teams to draft Americans IMO.

Because they are agreed to in the negotiated CBA. And the players agree to it in every contract they sign. There is no constitutional issue here. While it is true you can't force just anyone off the street to a drug test, athletes in sports that have mandatory drug testing have a choice. They can either not play the sport if they don't want to undergo mandatory testing or they can play the sport and abide by the rules that are agreed to in the CBA and the contract they willingly signed. No one is forcing anyone to do anything.

It is a hard cap. And the rich don't get rich by spending their money on things that lose money.
