2024/2025 CFL (non-Bomber) Off-Season Thread

Dickenson doesn't plan the O anymore. He's not OC anymore. He can't anymore as a HC & GM. Too much on his plate. If he was an OC then the Stamps would be much, much better offensively. He's also a heckuva QB coach. Dave is looking very & tired & I thibnk he's feeling the pressure. I'm friends with Dave but haven't talked to him in awhile. I think there'll be changes at the top if they have another losing season. -
Stanley is back there. Nuff said.

I've stopped watching The Rookie. As soon as that new cadet came on board who had a meddling mother & a reality TV show, that was it for me. Haven't watched it since. That show could have been so good if it was grittier but they've turned it into some kind of bad dramedy.

2024/2025 Blue Bombers Off-Season Thread

Remember how bad things were with Team President Garth Buchko, GM Joe Mack & HC Tim Burke? I don't think in 2014 when Miller, Walters & Osh were hired replacing those Three Stooges did we think in our wildest dreams we'd be where we're at financially as an organization. I just hope that we can maintain things for a few years yet. Remember the RedBlacks Expansion Draft? Ottawa GM Marcel Desjardins decided not to pick any Blue Bombers in the last round. He & his Asst GM guffawed at our roster & laughed & then mocked our team on TSN & passing on picking anyone. Both publicly shamed our team saaying on the broadcast that there wwasn't one player left on our 2013 roster that could help the RedBlacks. Desjardins really seemed to be enjoying himself at the expense of the Bombers. I was furious. It's okay for us (Bomber fanbase) to be upset with our team & we'll fight among us here but the hell I'll let fans from other teams make fun of us. Let alone an entitled & smirking now former CFL GM. I'll never forget that as a fan. Even today, when we beat the RedBlacks, the victory gives me a bit more energy than usual. An extra jump in my step. Next to the Riders, the RedBlacks are the team I hate. -

That is awesome. We all know these financial ups & downs are cyclical. The question is how long can the team continue to make $$$ before the downturn inevitably comes. -

My neighbourhood soccer team was a little tougher than yours. We kids had a choice between Crown Royal & a 7up. None of that sissy diet stuff. Or we could have a beer like Molson Canadian. If we won, the best player on the field got a pack of smokes. Export A Plain. Hey, it was the 1960's. We played in the fog on our bikes wearing no bike helmets or masks when they sprayed DDT for mosquitos in the summer. And no one made us stop. -

Desperation time. In years previous, the Stamps went on the road for the Stampede because 1.2 million people were whooping it up for 10 days. We'll see if this game draws more than 25000. I guess in today's market that would be a good crowd seeing as we can't even sell out LD anymore. Thursday is also Sneak A Peek at the Stampede where people can get in for half price so they'll be competing with families who'll have to decide to come to the Stampede to save a bit of money or go to the game. Buck really is a **** OC. He may wreck Rourke. If there's a problem between those 2 & Doman intervenes, you know who'll get the boot. -

They gave Bobby Dyce an extension as well. We'll see how long that lasts. How can someone "reinvigorate" his career? He can either play or he can't. I doubt if you'll see Chris Jones ever be HC in Edmonton again. He may show up in the CFL after a HC elsewhere is fired. -

Last season, Zach struggled at first when Schoen & Lawler were gone but finished with over 4,000 yards passing. Most qbs would be happy to get to that number. He had more TDs than interceptions. So, I'd say from the seventh or 8th game of the season on, Collaros played well. Not exceptional but good enough. As far as losing the GC, when he injured his finger we were toast. Not so much offensively but hooped defensively. No pass rush. Jake Thomas & Schmeckle were absoutely useless. Arbuckle could autograph each football he threw. We needed to stop the Argos & couldn't. And guess what??? We're doing the same thing again this year. Jordan Younger, Ritchie Hall & Mike O'Shea keep making the same mistakes with our Cheetos Defense. We lost to Nick Farking Arbuckle. They haven't learned. -
I read today the Bombers gave football in Manitoba $390,000. That's what a pro team should do to give back to the community & grow the the game. I don't recall the Stamps EVER doing something like that. I think I recounted the sad story of the Falcons organization here in Calgary. About 5 or 6 years ago, through a huge mistake in judgement, the Board that oversaw the Falcons Atoms, Pee Wees, Bantam & Spring League had their clubhouse broken into. They were totally cleaned out. Lost everything. The Board in its absolute stupidity tried to save money by not having any of the equipment insured. They lost everything. They couldn't fund raise that amount to replace everything & the organization folded. I thought the Stamps would step up to help. I don't recall them doing anything. That kind of sense of community is missing from the Stamps now. Previous owners would have done something. They would have helped.

Through Murray Edwards imcompetence, they've lost a generation of fans here. I don't know how they ever get them back.

Not convinced Dru Brown is the guy long term either. Buck as OC may have felt the same. He struggled at times in Ottawa & was benched at one point. Brown may develop into an elite starter but he has a ways to go yet. This will be a very important season for Brown to be sure. It may not be make or break but if he doesn't show growth as a qb then he may be another Nick Arbuckle. -
Notice how the 2 of the 3 worst franchises in the CFL are run by the same companies that own NHL teams? Calgary owner is worse than MLSE. He puts zero dollars into the team for promotion. You don't even know we have the Stamps here. We're the only CFL team that has no indoor practice facility. He refuses to reinvest in the team. A billionaire who could easily afford building a practice facility & stadium just refuses to do anything.

The one thing I've always wondered about... Booch & wbbfan are right. Training camps aren't what they were back in the day. Two-3 weeks of two a days hitting every practice with full pads. Guys running till they puke or pass out. Head Coaches pushing their players to the breaking point just to see who really wants to play as guys who couldn't hack it would sneak out in the middle of the night. Jim Spavital's camps were especially gruelling. Spavital was an ex Marine ran his camps like they were boot camp at Paris Island. Nothing like that anymore. Now teams do one 4 hour practice instead of two, 2 hour practices with just shoulder pads, helmets & shorts. Occasional hitting in full pads but maybe once a week. Yet, what do we see? More players in the infirmary by Day 4 of TC than there ever were back in the day with full hitting. How can guys get hurt so much when things are so relaxed than they were in the 60's? Then someone like Neufeld mysteriously gets an injury where's he's out day to day for weeks & the media is never told how long he'll be gone. I'm sure that's already in the works for the guy again this year. -
That's what I've always said. Two jobs. One job is for the day to day football operations. Deal with player suspensions, rule changes, on field problems. The other is more of a marketing kind of role. Involvement in negotiating a new CBA, tv contract, finding new opportunities to generate revenues, expansion & getting players (dare I say "star" players?) out there doing commercials & PR events.

Also, you can watch Chris Streveler on Instagram @cstrevy5. I've been following his off season workouts & I don't think I've seen a pro athlete work as hard as Streveler, not only to overcome his knee injury but also to keep working on changing his fundamentals from the old "linear" to the more modern "rotational" qb. He looks ready to go as well.
