He did the smart thing & actually resigned due to health reasons but he was 85 when he left. Benedict did receive widespread condemnation for doing so. It just isn't done & Pope Francis stayed on to the end.

2024/2025 CFL (non-Bomber) Off-Season Thread

It is a measuring stick when you can listen to all 162 Jays & playoff games if they qualify on The Fan 960 here. You can also listen online. That is how you build a national fanbase. -
He was 58. By the time he was in his 70's the schedule was killing him. They should (but don't) have a retirement escape. Keep the position young.

The Vatican appoints these Popes when they're in their mid 60's & then works them to death. By the time they pass away, they have no idea what they're doing or going on. After that, they just do what they're told what to do. They should appoint them in their mid 40's when they're young & vibrant. Then have them retire at 65-70. To me, it is a form of elder abuse that has been allowed to continue for a thousand years. However, I guess it's a calling (for death).

2024/2025 CFL (non-Bomber) Off-Season Thread

I don't believe the Raptors are huge across the country. Basketball is popular but the Raptor are more of a regional Southern Ontario team. No one, unless they're super basketball fans care about them. Very few get excited about them here in Calgary. None of their games are on radio like the Blue Jays are on Sportsnet radio. Canada got on the bandwagon when they won their NBA title in 2018 but once they fell back to their losing ways, the lethargy returned. That's why they need a marketing person & staff at CFL HQ. To begin to convince corporate Toronto that there are marketable stars in the CFL. It won't be easy but that's why they'd be hired. -

i think number 1 is the league has to start working on a ntional level with Canadian companies to make our stars more visible. they have to get aggressive getting even ONE player on a national advertising campaign. If we see a Raptor player Scotty Barnes doing Subway commercials (Raptor players are virtually unknown across Canada), I find it hard to believe that a high profile CFL player can't do ads as well. It jut doesn't happen by itself. The league has to work with teams as well to do the same in every CFL city advertising for local car dealerships, restaurants, retailers etc. that's just a start. -

We do have stars but the CFL does absolutely nothing to promote its stars. Under Scarf Boy, there was more concern about cutbacks to coaching staffs & scouts than actually growing the league & with the new Commisioner that has to change. The CFL expects fans to buy tickets to go to the games yet does nothing to raise the profile & appeal of the players to fans. -
I disagree, respectfully. The Jets led the NHL from start to finish. Even when teams finally figured them out in the second half of the season we still won. We were & still are a tough team to beat. If the Jets are that fragile that we believe we need to beat an inferior team in the first round to kick things off in the playoffs then we're in big trouble. We shouldn't be afraid to play anyone. To me, the only thing that matters is making it to the actual Stanley Cup Final series.

It sounds like being a Bomber/Jet fan is just one huge ordeal after another for you. Why would you be terrified of 2 teams we may not play? At some point, you have to have faith in your team's ability to win. Just like if the Jets get eliminated at some point. yeah I'll be pissed off but I won't lose any sleep over it. Same with the Bombers. Three Grey Cup losses in a row. The last one was just as bad as the two previous. I don't care if we lost by one or 100. Was I pissed off? Sure, for a couple of days after each loss, maybe. But, there was Xmas coming & the holidays to get ready for so it wasn't worth dwelling on. Life goes on. What difference does it make if we play them now or in the next round?

The Jets have to be much more physical & up heir intensity level which they couldn't do the past 2 playoff seasons.

Canadian ghost hunter to another: "Wait. Did you hear that???" Ghost voice: (Very raspy sounding): "Get ouuuuut, ehhh??"

Everyone remembers the last two playoff seasons. Great regular seasons just to get torched in the first round twice. The Jets have to earn their playoff respect from other fans & teams media. I just hope they learned a valuable lesson.

Davis never delivered at the beginning, the middle or the end. There wasn't one game where he ever shone. Where fans said this guy has potential. He had none. I hate guys like that who are gifted a spot because they're supposedly great athletes. In reality, they have million dollar bodies but ten cent heads. -

The guy just showed up every year for over a decade with the teams he... cough, cough... played for & did absolutely nothing. -
Their goalie stood on his head their entire playoff series that year. Jordan Binnington has done nothing since.

I wasn't talking about Lirim himself. It was just an example. My point is it's difficult to keep players as it is. If we just developed Canadians for certain positions like a kicker, we may have a difficult time doing so with 1 year contracts. -

I think we have to concentrate on the best player at every position within the ratios. If a Kicker is a great one like Castillo, then really have no problem with it. However, if we waste a DI spot on a subpar punter like Sheahan, then yeah, we need to change. I'm hopeful we draft a punter out of U Sport but it looks like we won't. Osh & Walters seem happy with Sheahan. The Bombers, flush full of cash just do not want to spend on an area of need anywhere. They're happy with mediocre at positions like Center, DT & Punter. -

The problem with developing a Canadian kicker is the 1 year deals. We have a Canadian on the roster & say we develop him. One day he replaces Castillo. Then the Canadian kicker's contract is up & he goes on the tour of NFL camps for a season or 2. Like Lirim Hajrullahu, he never comes back to the Bombers as he ultimately signs as a CFL FA elsewhere. To get him back, then we overpay. And that goes for virtually every position. It's hard to develop talent when they can & will be poached as free agents. The 1 year deals are a scourge that need to be eliminated. Looks like our Aussie punter is coming back. Oh joy. -
That was a hundred years ago. We were a manufacturing hub much like the Windy City. We had all the meat packing plants for Western canada like Chicago did for the md west of the US. We were also a grain & wheat hub with an mportant commodity exchange. Both cities grew rapidly because of the railroad but that's where it stopped. Today, we're more like the Canadian version of Des Moines, Iowa.

Game 81 : 1000 Bottles of Baby Oil
SpeedFlex27 replied to FrostyWinnipeg's topic in Winnipeg Jets Discussion
You'd think that having the chance to play on a Stanley Cup winning team would motivate some of the lazy & entitled NHL talent to want to play here but with today's players, I guess not. Having the chance to hit the links or the beach everyday usurps wanting to win a championship. I had a coach once who said that there are players who don't care if they win or lose. if they play or not. In the case of NHL players, living in Southern California, Texas or South Florida was more important. Just as long as they got paid. He called these guys Jacket Players. -

That's called trying to fit a circlel into a square hole... Or vice versa. It's also a sign that Buck is probably a good game planner from watching hours upon hours of video but if the plan went off the rails he couldn't adjust. -

Mitchell is more brittle than Zach. His shoulder is surgically repaired & if he takes a hit it'll be over. Zach isn't held together by surgical thread & staples. One hit to the head may finish him as a player but he seems to have developed a bit of a toughness/longevity streak the past 4 seasons. We'll see.
