  1. The problem with these leagues is they are minor leagues...  In no sport do minor league teams in the United States gain enough popularity to gain national TV ratings.  They are coming in and paying players too much money.  There are so many players out there that they would field a similar caliber of play with half the pay.  Even Johnny Mazniel played basically for free in the Spring League. These leagues are highly unlikely to come anywhere near turning profits. There already is a second football circuit that's popular in the NCAA. I just don't see this working at the salaries they are paying out. Can't wait for the AAF and XFL CFL dispersal drafts!!

The @TorontoArgos have their new Head Coach! Corey Chamblin has been named the #Argos new bench boss. FULL DETAILS | http://on.cfl.ca/FUYe30mVBjn  #PullTogether

Not a bad choice considering they were rejected by Orlondo, Lapo, and Claybrooks.  He has a ring and will certainly make things more uncomfortable for players not giving their all.

    Stubler & Claybrooks are Americans.

I know. I’m not suggesting that the cfl exclusively hire Canadians. But just do more of it.  When you need to find a coach and haven’t developed one maybe look to the cis rather than ncaa. At least they will have a strong familiarity with the Canadian game coming in. And whether or not the ncaa offer health insurance is s non-issue

No benefits either & no pension plan.

CFL should focus on hiring Canadians.  The problem with hiring Americans is that health care is a thing down there.  Coaches living year-round in Canada don't have to worry about it.  Plus I think the NCAA would be less likely to poach Canadian coaches.  When they poach a CFL coach it's typically a situation where the guy was a known commodity as a player south of the line before coming to the CFL.

Fears over this football operations cap I think are overblown.  Its affecting a couple teams who were overspending because they could.  Meantime teams like Calgary who are better run don't seem to have any issues.  You gotta develop coaches yourself so you always have a up and comer available when you lose a coach.  I remember when Calgary lost Rich Stubler and there was some concern.  Claybrooks ended up being cheaper and better.

They will want to draw fans of course, but since every team will be owned by the league, its not as critical to the financial health of particular teams.  The TV deals will be most important.  They could switch teams every year if they wanted to.  They want good TV markets to attract a good TV deal.

It sounds like NBC was holding off on the AAF because they were more interested in the XFL.  When you look at the team locations on a map the XFL is more interesting to national networks.   The AAF only seems to capture the southern portion of the map. They seem to be targeting more markets that might have a local fanbase who would actually go to a game where the XFL is moreso targetting a wide television audience.

Good news too if he gets a HC because while I certainly was disappointed by his play calling down the stretch, I really don't want to fire him.  Promotion to HC I like.

Having said that, if we need a new OC, please no more Bellefeuilles here, I don't want to go through those dark days again.

Wonder if Buck Pierce is ready to take on the job

I’m pretty sure that the job would go to Buck. I’d be tempted to take a serious look at Ryan Dinwiddie. I was impressed with how he handled being rushed into the OC job in Montreal and he’s since coached under Dave Dickenson and could maybe duplicate what they’ve been doing so well in Calgary.

I believe so; however, it may be written into Lapo's contract that compensation is not required. I seem to remember (or, possibly, I'm making it up) that Lapo can leave for a HC gig, if offered. I wonder how if his contract would be structured in a way that would make it less of an obstruction for a new team to hire him?

It seems like the Canadian Mafia are a lot nicer than their name suggests.  We always seem to get the short end of the stick when it comes to being ruthless.

  8. Maybe someone else has a better memory than me. In fact likely most of you do...  I seem to remember some sort of new policy in the league where teams actually have to provide compensation when they hire an assistant coach who is under contract with another team... if so would we not be in line for compensation if Lapo gets a head coaching gig?

I would think that if surgery was necessary, it would have happened already. I am of the opinion that Nichols' biggest problem was between his ears.

Being physically limited and playing on a team with a subpar receiving core can lead to between the ears problems cropping up.  He needs to go home and get healthy and the team needs to focus on upgrading the receiving core for him.  I honestly think Streveler is saving Nichols job right now.  The fact that Streveler is so promising leads me to believe they are fine with sticking with Nichols as a bridge guy. If there was no shining star on the horizon they might be more interested in looking at other options.

I think some people are hoping Nichols has at least some type of minor health issue so it creates an excuse for his play.

Im not looking for an excuse for his play in 2018.  I'm looking for a reason to believe he can play like he did in 2017.

The difference there is that the NHL didn't start that.  It was a Punjabi fan who also happened to be an aspiring broadcaster who got that going.  I do think it's a good idea, but I don't think it's something that can be forced.  You need someone from the Punjabi (or any other) community to be passionate about the sport and want to give that a try.

The disadvantage the CFL has here is that field hockey is one of the most popular sports in India. I mean.. I moved to India it would be a lot easier for me to figure out field hockey than Cricket for example...  Football is very hard to understand if you didn't grow up with it.

As long as we have lapo and Harris the offense will run through Harris as option 1, 2 and 3. No matter who is at qb.

I’m not convinced. Lapo builds the offence around the players he has. Both Khari Jones and Darian Durant put up massive passing numbers under Lapo.  When your receivers are sub par and Nichols with a knee brace is your qb you have to take a different strategy to maximize wins.  I’m hoping for an upgraded receiving core and Nichols can return to 2017 level of mobility when he averaged 7.2 yards per carry.

If we offer 250k and BC offers 200K he might sign with us.  Or... he might decide that 50k is not worth it and take the lower offer because maybe he sees things differently than you do.  As weird as this sounds to a lot of people, it's not always about the money.

The biggest advantage Winnipeg has is we can build our cap around his contract. BC most likely tries to build their cap around Mike Reilly and will have to offer Bighill money from whatever is left over in late Feb.  I also wouldn’t be surprised if BC wants to go with Herdman and spend money elsewhere.

Let's get Chungh and Goossen under contract. Then you hope that Gray beats out Neufeld and Neufeld becomes your 6th OL. Of course, in the scenario, I'm also hoping that somebody tells Danny Mac and Co to get off their asses and find some receivers.

Yeah. So far he’s been better at finding defensive backs than receivers. Just like his playing days ;)
