Blue Bombers -- 2025/26 Offseason -- Discussion Thread
GCn20 replied to johnzo's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
If we see Elgersma starting next year something has gone incredibly wrong (injuries or desperation) or incredibly right (he just shows an incredible learning curve and talent). The former would be great but not likely. Our team has pretty much, since 2013 (with the exception of OL) not played rookie NATs in the first year of their contract and bring them along slowly. I think that is just fine. It has served us well and unless someone absolutely jumps off the page it is the best path for their development imo. Could we have given Shay/Smith more time this year? Highly debatable. On one hand, it would be nice to give every rookie meaningful reps, on the other we weren't in a situation to play fast and loose with rookie mistakes. We eked into the playoffs. If we were more secure in the standings my opinion would be different depending on whether or not they showed readiness. Brown showed well but it was a pretty limited sample size, and ZC still looked good....maybe not MOP good, but certainly upper echelon of the league good. I think this is a bad decision in hindsight but it is also the type of decision that could have gone either way. I won't beat up KW for that one. -
from FotWJ Scott Arniel says Connor Hellebuyck had been battling with this knee issue since late in training camp and tried to play through it. Hellebuyck’s surgery is scheduled for tomorrow

Comrie has been pretty solid, but I know what you mean. Milic has real good numbers with the Moose this year, so hopefully that translates. Not sure who’s out there to pick up, if they want to have a look around.

Now there's a photoshopped video of our offense ready to be made. -
lol....my point was all rider fans were saying "Those players are all going to want raises, good luck with that Walters" Sounds like he's really contemplating retirement. And who can blame him? Going out on top isn't always possible and this is likely his only chance.
-
Nield isn't a guy to change much about a receiving corps. Emilus though, yeah I think he's a pretty under rated guy around the league.
-
I also like Nield from Sask..thought he came up with some clutch catches..would add depth at least.

Emilus is another guy that I'd love to see Winnipeg add. (I know the Riders will make signing him a priority).
-
Ugh...never been a Comrie fan..i know he is a great team guy just don't think he is good enough talent wise..i hope i am wrong...who is the backup? ( i see right now it's Milic) we look at possibly bringing someone in?

We bring in extra protection all the time, it doesn't matter when the middle of your line goes "OLE!" And you got no targets to dump the ball quick. We need to use less blockers and have more receiving targets. Beat pressure with quick completions not protection for slow developing plays. -
Bombers didn't have 45 free agents all wanting a raise after those years. Ya Sask greatly benefited from a healthy Harris this year. That isn't the norm for him either.

I'm not arguing that ZC over Brown was for sure the right call at the time. What I disagree with is that it was a slam dunk that every team would have made the move to Brown. Zach had just thrown 33 TDs in 2023 and narrowly missed out being Winnipeg's MOP nominee. Was back to back MOP in 2021 and 2022. If Dru had one more year on his contract and played like that in 2024 while Zach struggled I'd agree with you. -
Trevor Harris is 40 years old and stayed healthy.... we think that's gonna repeat or that he won't fall off a cliff at some point? Or maybe even retire.
-
Pardon me? Let's go Eric Comrie, you da man.

we had a lot of guys tho in prime...and had some yrs ahead of them still This Sssk squad was a win now or be out of the running for a while....They not in a position roster wise to run it back multiple yrs...so there's a difference there... If we do a legit re-tool...moreso in the way we go about things roster/player wise....hire a real OC...I can see the west next yr being a B.C/us battle for 1st....with Stamps pushing... That's a big if tho as first look to me...I don't see a lot of deviation ....but it is early....but we also should have already been on record with who is not being brought back...player and coach's....

Yikes.

With what he is about to make for 2026...what BO could be pulling in...tho I think he as good as gone with Osh back....need for a legit #1...Demski's money, oline issues and quickfix is FA signings...do we even have the ability cash wise to surround him with the best we can find?....doubtful...unless we cut and scrimp elsewhere and bastardize the roster even further to make the remote chance of ZC being elite even a possibility But...possible way is to remove salaries of KOLO...Tomas..Kramdi..Wilsom....Holm...Gauthier...Hallett....they all outlived their bang for buck value...a few of which never deserved the buck they were eating -
To be fair this is what everyone said about the bombers after 2019 and 2021.

Yeah, he can not be what drives the offense. In a perfect world, I'd love to see 7 or 8 blockers on any given play with two true TE types that can catch. Have two or three legit ball carriers moving around with some big play WR types taking the top off. -

He was back to back then, in 23, we began to see the cracks in Zach's armor resurface, along with his injuries. And the league was catching back up to us. His overall brutal QBing performances here in the playoffs had also just cost us a GC. 236 yards 0 tds 1 int vs 290 yards 3 tds 1 int. We can say no comparison between Faj and Zach, and on that night, it was true. Zach couldn't compare in the least to Faj. He won 2 rings and was in the race for several MOPs as well. That was the ideal moment to move on from Zach. Even if he had a couple strong strong years left in him. He still had value; we could've gotten a very nice return for him and saved money going to brown. I can't see many cases where the CFL team stayed with the old guy. -

There is truth to the statement Walters made that we have to surround Zac with more talent. His deterioration has coincided with that of the oline and to a lesser extent the receivers. The only way he turns it around is if he actually gets protection, and the offense as a whole executes some decent game plans
