Kyle Walters interview

http://iphone.tsn.ca/tsnpodcasts/1290_BigShow092414_KyleWaltersInterview.mp3

From TSN 1290. Some interesting points of note:

- Execution in run plays is more if a factor than sticking to the run. Can't keep calling run plays if you're in second and long all game. Admits it's a fine line.

- Admits team will need to overpay in free agency in the offseason to add quality Canadians. Can't fully rely on the draft.

- It is a very deep draft this year. As a result teams aren't as willing to trade draft picks this year. "your first three, four rounds you're going to get some quality players."

Funny, Walters admits that there is a problem with getting the running game up to par but the Bombers have done little with personnel to address that issue.  Most other CFL teams have been switching RB's in and out and experimenting with different combinations while the Bombers stand pat with Grigsby as the lone back and the worst team rushing stats. in the league.

Walters has some warts in his recruitment strategy thus far that is pretty clear, and one of the things Mike O'Shea needs to learn is that sometimes you have to make roster changes even if the guys in there aren't ******* things up. Sometimes you have to take those guys out to get your play makers on the roster. Always be looking to upgrade your roster where you can.

I found this interview very __________________.

Name one team that switched out their running back for something other than an injury or a problem with ball security.

Sask., Edmonton, Toronto, B.C., Calgary, Montreal, Hamilton have all used more than one  RB's during games to mix things up.  Bombers are the only team that has relied on a single back so as to not confuse their opponents with trickery.

Why are you defending the Bombers approach to running?  The stats. speak.

We've used Paris Cotton, Troy Stoudermire, Carl Volny and MP Pontbriand out of the backfield at certain times this season. I'm defending their approach because the impression you have is wrong.

Don't worry, I'll make a factual error or controversial statement in another thread, you can blow it out of proportion until it overwhelms my original point and then you can win then.  I'm a sharer.  Its cool.

one and five WITH Willy - and that 'one' was against a Montreal team that started Alex Brink. There's a lot more issues than the running game. Still a Willy fan but he's come down to earth since his hot start. Picked Hamilton this week and if Willy doesn't play well, the bombers brass better not be dumb enough to put another boat in the end zone, as the 'Cats will be spending a lot time in there

Considering how the team has played the past 6 weeks, if Willy is healthy, we can look forward to a dogfight with a 50-50 chance of winning. If Willy is significantly less than at his best and/or we have to go to Brohm or Marve, all bets are off. If we can't beat Hamilton, we are out of the playoffs no matter what the mathematics say and if we lose against Ottawa (shudder), its paper bag time.

Same old, same old from you guys.

What happens if Hamilton stinks out the joint?

What happens if we just play a good clean game and win on a FG?

Hamilton is a better team lately, but I'm still not convinced Collaros can beat us alone.

Yea it's kinda weird how we are the league capable of crapping our pants in a game... Well, if you listened to some posters here anyway..

Hamilton is just as capable of really dumb penalties, dropsies, QB poor play, defensive miscues, etc etc..

A win is a win is a win, and it really doesn't matter how. But, a loss realistically means the end of the season, and a loss to a team which has been a bottom-feeder for most of the season would add insult to injury. Sometimes pessimism is reality and did anyone really expect better than 8 and 10 this year? We're on the right path, but its going to be a long road with rough patches along the way.

But, a loss realistically means the end of the season,

BC plays the exact same teams as we do. Calgary - twice…….Hamilton, Ottawa, Edmonton

i-want-to-be-thin-imagine-if-you-will.jp….Playing all the teams the same, win lose or draw, if we beat BC….we're in, so no, a loss doesn't realistically mean the end of the season…..just a disappointment.

This is not a 'must-win' game...  the 'slide' we are on is a lot different from the second half of 2011 slide

This is a please let Willy get healthy and let's throw Brohm to the wolves game - in fact, I'd be fine with starting Brohm/Marve for the next two games if it means Willy finally gets back to early season form.  He's been playing nicked up for a while now.

Worst case scenario:  We find out that Brohm is not the answer as our backup.

Besides, if we can't beat Ottawa without Willy, then we don't deserve to be in the playoffs anyway...

Am I crazy for thinking that the Bombers D has actually faired well against running quarterbacks this year?

That is not one of the reasons you are crazy.

Mike, you're serving some exceptionally weak sauce today.  Between the lot I doubt they have 20 carries in total, hardly an exploration of the possibilities that exist even within the current team personnel.  Bolton probably got tired of waiting around for a shot and when Cotton joined him on the P.R. he packed his bag and left.  Will McGuffie be the next to give up without a shot or will he whither on the PR until Marcel takes a fancy to him.

Am I crazy for thinking that the Bombers D has actually faired well against running  this year?

Fixed that for you.

Walters needs to be given a few seasons to show what he can do. He already succeeded in securing two major pieces by getting Willy and O'Shea. The Bombers are improved and they are playing in a very tough West Division. Should the team take a step backward next season then it will be time for the long knives.

Who's talking about the long knives? Take your hyperbole and get out, we are simply pointing out areas he needs to improve on. No one is talking about backstabbing the guy.

He's had a bit of a free ride from the media, something that, competent or not, Mack never had from day 1.

If we go into next year with the same lousy o-line, Romby at receiver, and Etch as DC I would start asking WTF.

Fricken 3 imports on the O Line and Willy has no pocket. Stupid.

Except Etch at DC is O'Shea's choice not Walters.
