Well, you can effectively avoid taking the rap for draft busts ....if you simply trade away your top draft picks, every year......

  • Corey Mace and a first round pick (instead of Tom Canada) for Zeke Moreno.   One of the great trades of our time.

    OK, I did it anyways...   2013: (1) Mulumba, (2) Robertson, (3) Fitzgerald, (4) DiCroce, (6) Stephen Alli, (7) Billy Pavlopolous  2012: (1) Pencer, (3) Aprile*, (3) Biukidi, (4) Rene Stephen, (4) J

2012 was a pretty weak draft year. That being said Matt Norman, Shamawd Chambers or Kirby Fabien would have been preferable to Pencer. Of course, hindsight is always 20-20.

Speaking of hindsight being 20-20 I still think back to how we were debating between Poblah and Laurent in that supplemental draft... oh well  ^_^

We'd have lost Laurent anyway so  it's a moot point.

Being on a team isn't what we should be looking at.  It's the NI starters who are the difference makers.  Between 2010 and 2013 we had 5 top 4 overall picks including 2 first overall (Muamba/Poblah).  Only 1 became a starter.  I haven't checked, but I doubt any other team had more top end picks during that time frame.

Hamilton. I  think it's 3 seasons now that they haven't got their 1st round pick starting.

I do know we definitely felt that Coehoorn would have been a better pick than Jade. Other guys that went right after Jade - Ianuzzi, Tyler Holmes. Sigh.

The hindsight game is more depressing than fun  :(

Our NI talent isn't that bad. Since last year we've added some legit Canadians:

Neufeld

Bucknor

Alexander

Newman

Feoli-Gudino

Goossen

Briggs

Blake

Hajarulahu

Not bad? Why do you think we finished 3-13 last year? Because of our Canadian talent or more specifically lack thereof. We have to restock at almost every position. Especially offensive line.

I guess he means our NI talent now is better than it was the end of 2013.

The advantage of having such a poor season last year is that the bar is so low, anything is an improvement.

I bitched about the Etienne selection & his subsequent useless Bomber career but was admonished by most here because they felt he needed to be given a chance. Well, it's just about 4 seasons later & he'll be known as one of the worst, if not the worst first round picks ever by the Bombers. If he was a fourth round selection, I'd have been fine with it. But first round?? Ugh! Mack was clueless.

Yeah, I misread what he said. I can accept that. Sorry, gbill. My bad. Let's hope so.

I hear you Iso but to be fair, last year he looked like he was starting to make a contribution until he got walloped in the head and was essentially done for the year. Worst first rounder ever? I don't know...there's been some real stinkers, and for a lot of draft years, we never even had a first round pick. I think Pencer is more of a bust then Jade, as at least Jade saw the field.

Here's a walk down memory lane of some of our first round picks over the years:

2000 (second overall): Daaron McField, DL -- Lasted one season, never started and traded away in his second season.

1996 (fourth): Andrew Henry, DB: role player for two seasons.

1995 (sixth): Sean Graham, SB: Lasted three injury-plagued seasons.

1994 (fourth): Ryan Carey, DB: Special teams specialist.

1993 (fifth): Alan Wetmore, LB: Another special-teams guy.

1989 (eighth): John O'Brien, LB: Never played a single game in Blue and Gold.

1988 (third): Dan Wicklum, LB: Lasted one season before getting picked up by Calgary.

1987 (sixth): Andrew McConnell, DL: Never played for Bombers.

1986 (seventh): Brian Bellway, DL: Never played for Bombers.

He's not even close to our worst 1st round pick ever.

Oi with the belaboured Mack hate. You need note positivity in your life, Iso. I'm choosing to focus on the new regime taking charge and not putting up with crap.

Exactly. Penser was just straight up released without ever starting a game (I think).  Yet Etienne was... worse...?

Penser started about 6 games...

Penser started about 6 games...

Did he actually play??

The most amazing thing to me from that list is that we didn't have a single first round pick from 2001 through 2007!?!?  Did we trade them all for starting Canadians? Please tell me we at least got Doug Brown for one of those.

We got Doug Brown's rights from Calgary for a third round pick in 2003. The Stamps weren't complaining too much (though I'm sure they'd have preferred to have Doug playing for them) as that pick turned out to be Mike Labinjo.

I looked back at the years 2001-2007 and what is even more amazing to me is from the years 2001 - 2006 we not only didn't have any first round picks, we had no seconds either. We ended up getting our first pick in the third round almost every year, and some years we didn't even have a third rounder (like in 2003). In 2007, we had a second rounder, and we took Corey Mace, who never played a down for us.

And 2002 1st rounder, who ended up being Oosterhuis, cut by Calgary and ended up playing 9 years for the Bombers.

The problem wasn't the trades, the problem was most trades were for import players.  Now if you're making up for it by signing NIs in free agency that's a different tack, but the Bombers never had the cash to be free agent players.

Not totally true. Taman had that big coup in 2005 when he signed Kamau Peterson out of free agency...that went well...

That one year Taman traded a first rounder for Gauthier I couldn't complain. Starting NI tackles are gold Jerry gold....

He's not even close to our worst 1st round pick ever.
