Post (game) Back to mortem - Leopards rarely change their spots edition

First off....tho not an excuse for the loss, but man that reffing again was the shitz

Secondly even tho that was some the crappiest scheming and game planning to date, we actually were in a position to win that game amazingly...but once again the long and short of it we were let down again by poor coaching, which involved the game plan (both sides the ball) ...the lack of any adjustments or recognition of what was even actually going on in the game, and how to attack it, and a total deviation away from what seemed to be our identity, especially on offense from last 2 games and a way to control a game from the on-set.

Safe to say I don't think our staff when watching the film even know what to watch, and build off of, and or where to tweak (more on that later) and sadly was a fail in the litmus test of who/what we are and that almost certain the Mtl game was an anomaly, or the just had a real bad night and came in too cocky and dropped a deuce...I think I am confident in saying it was both from what was witnessed

Now explain to me why we haven't been using Singer all yr....when we easily could have/should have been but opted for the sillyb3 Canadian plan? Sure it's one reg. season game...But he looked and did just as he has in his 2 pre-season games, has all the tools required (speed...tight route runner...high points a ball...a threat with it...obviously has ZC trust with 9 targets) and looked far from being a green rookie in one the more intimidating first game environments. Now imagine with me if you will where he could be right now with that being game 12 under his belt as opposed to 11 weeks running skelly in practice. Been saying it all yr what a dumb decision that was and talent should always trump familiarity and bias but here we are...seeing as the West has no real R.O.Y standout undoubted he would be our R.O.Y nominee and likely maybe the West front runner...weird eh...

Also explain to me why Cobb and Neild are ahead of Big Kev again...A guy who is a size mismatch with pretty much anyone...DB's you can see don't like taking him on with any physicality and has a 76% catch rate over his yrs here. He can play outside, though not his best place to be but would be ideal inside and in TE sets as a blocker "and" a threat to slide out and catch a pass and do something with it. Like Singer...Imagine what his development would be with actual use (proper use) and reps, especially now in his 3rd yr. Christ in his rookie yr he had an 80% catch rate...was good on 2nd down conversions at 15%...and this yr of his targets 67% have converted 2nd downs..seems like a guy you would wanna lean on and expand his role...But hey let's drop Corcorran and Cobb in the lineup...neither of whom compared to him, and quite frankly he should be getting more reps ahead of Neild too....But again talent and potential gets trumped by a HC bias to his favorites for whatever reason....That Daniel's poor attempt at that 2nd down conversion alone should at least have Clercius above him to be that guy, if not bump Daniels right off the roster for now. I have yet to see an impactful block by him this yr but have noticed Clercius on several with key blocks. But I guess since we traded up to get him that sealed his position on roster...Pre-determined before TC like several others

If Demski is back next week and the wr group isn't him with White..Pokey...Singer and more Clercius....Some heads need to roll if not get 5 upside the head...And if Pokey cant go then better be Womack getting his audition

Dumb roster decisions by a dumb coach...Also nice to get Peterson on the roster...but why when he just stood there all game...maybe a 2 back set at some times....Make the defense have to choose one or other...maybe slide one out in motion to see what coverage is there and if its a LB gonna be on man and not just a zone it opens up space for the other to run?...no creativity...no foresight...just dumb coaching to bring on a guy...much like Hazen to basically have zero participation...But looking at our neglected depth chart there was really nobody else to bring on...speaking of which we have no Global player on it so if Sheehan was to have gone down and cant go next week...we scrambling to add one and they get automatically rostered regardless of any usefulness...that's just mint too...They oblivious to their roster...as it sits we have 9 tho it was 10 with Peterson...but we can actually have 12 with 2 extra's being globals...and we don't have any why??...Be nice to have 1 there who we familiar with...and is familiar with us...but nope

Elsbury...why?....He has gotten worse as the season has dragged on...Obviously teams are doing their film work to see how to turnstile him. Tho we dont see it....Osh see's his big legs and is all chubby about it but the guy being an import is nowhere giving you bang for the buck when you sacrifice a much needed American elsewhere who could make an impact. And as mentioned in game day thread all these what seems like missed blocks/free guys taking shots/ what looks to be confusion as to who takes who on the interior....in my football experience and eye tells me the center is not making the right calls....and is not seeing things right cause that should never happen as much as it is...Our veteran oline man all around him should not look as pathetic as they have on many occasions, nor has their skills eroded that much...plus his snaps are still all over the map and not consistent, and for a big guy he sure gets roller skated back into the pocket alot..I' almost say more than Kolo...Eli would give us way more and is nowhere near as bad as Center Guy...He's now lost his name like Sheehan did until he started to punt more like a punter now, so got his name back

Those 2 last paragraphs lead again back to what my drum beat for 3+ yrs is now...Poor coaching...a total inability to recognize things...let alone actual talent that matters between the white lines...and is killing us...over and over.....and over...I didnt even listen to the post game but I sure osh used the big comeback to say basically we all good....and we arent

Woodbey I think is done for yr if not while as he went out non-contact, so curious what bonehead addition Osh will make...Seeing as they like to use Ayers (who stepped up) and Woodbey as an End...maybe dress Jaworski as he is...hmmm...an end and actually has a motor to play inside and could offer some spark to the Dline...But I sure he will go with Hazen...for no particular reason other than Osh is a clueless blind squirrel looking for nut... I would have gave him huge props going for 2 when we had some momo to win the game even if we failed

BB...thats the true litmus...if we tank that one safe to say next weeks post will be rigor mortise setting in edition

The cover teams played really well without the extra ST linebacker. More proof that you don’t need to keep Singer off the roster for a guy like Hazen.

  • True..but sask would have just kicked the convert instead of trying for 2..so woulda been moot anyway..but I sure lesson learned by Vavs

I don't know how anyone can defend the coaches. If I am the opposing team:

Late in a game if you need a score:

  • Run 7-8 yard routes. We know our QB will have time and the receiver will have a 5 yard cushion.

Late in the game if you need a stop:

  • Blitz. We know the Bombers have zero ability to beat it.

Apparently "Touch down Tommy" was referring to the ball hitting the ground.

So our inability to block is on the coaches? When we can't protect we can't win. That is on the players. When teams are taking advantage of our weak pass pro and taking away our hot routes that becomes a player issue because there is little more a coach can do. On D, we were OFTEN in the position to have the opposition off the field if we can tackle. We whiffed. That's not on the coaches. Players have to make a play sometimes and we were not the team doing it. It's hard to gameplan around poor execution. EXECUTION is 100% on the players when the lack of execution is not play call but fundamentals. All the dropped passes, all the whifs on tackles are what lost us this game imo. I'm certainly not going to suggest it was brilliant coaching but it was enough to win if we execute at a higher level.

The one aspect where I will blame the coaching is on the numerous time counts. Those hurt, and we should have been better prepared.

This was a game that demonstrated once again that football is the ultimate team game and in this particular incident blame, responsibility can be shared among all including the coaches.

What it demonstrated is that we need improvement in all areas for sure and that some guys got to show up to the field a little more focused and detail oriented. Ugly display by the OL, and entire D tackling. No one at all rallying to the ball.

I’ll blame Condell cuz Brady’s 1st touch in the 2nd half wasn’t until pretty much the 4th quarter.

O’Shea? I’m not sure what he does during games. He’s certainly not calling the O or D plays, I’ll blame O’Shea for allowing that mess on O to continue this long, for hiring Tommy in the first place. Tommy reminds me of the gay character on family guy? The ohh no guy. Every time we mess up I can hear him going ohh nooo. It’s wild.

D hasn’t been terrible tho. I mean 32 points with OT involved, can’t complain. O just can’t score 30 consistently

Every O puts up points every week. Ours doesn’t. Ours is wildly inconsistent.

Pokey and white when not involved are lazy players. OL is just bad. Zach has zero awareness and can’t read a blitz.

Should have gone for 2? Then we lose then cuz Sask just blitzes us and it’s over. We have no answer and our qb is likely permanently concussed.

Edited by Goalie

I played sports. When we lost we always blamed the coaches eventho they weren’t the ones playing. In the end we all knew we lost cuz we just weren’t good enough. We didn’t have enough talent and the other team played better, the other team made mistakes and we didn’t capitalize on it on the field. Coaches coach but during the games, players play and need to execute. Ours don’t consistently.

Yes.... It's the coaches job to put the best players they have available on the roster and put them in positions to get the most out of what they do have... I mean we've seen way way worse offensive lines have better results than these guys get sometimes. Tommy Condell is not giving this team the options needed or coaching his quarterback to actually find the options that should be there to beat a blitz.

The players play football the coaches play chess against the opposite coach. The way the offense folds with a blitz is absolutely a coaching issue.

So this applies to Calgary Edmonton also. Or just the bombers? Cuz that was an epic collapse there also. Must be on Dave Dickinson right.

Edited by Goalie

It applies to everyone. If you can't deal with a blitz at this level your team is unprepared. Look how ineffective bomber blitzes are. The opposition reads it and knows where an option is going to be.

I’d put blitzes on the QB. Zach has zero awareness. None. He is an immobile statue. That plays a role. A big one. OL can’t block 7 on 5 either so it’s scheme at times but the QB needs to recognize that. The coaches can’t recognize it for him. Lots of sacks on Zach, If he moved 5 feet one direction, they miss him also. Our QB has the ego, he thinks he can throw the long bombs still. He thinks he’s one of the best in the league still. He’s not. That’s part of the problem. Zach ain’t what he used to be. But always had zero awareness. In the past he could run tho. He can’t anymore.

What I saw was max pro formations against the blitz and them still beating our protection. If you've got another way to counter the blitz let me know. I'll wait. If we don't run max pro when our OL is struggling and we continue to allow pressure that's on coaching, but that's not what happened. Our guys at various times were losing man on man battles at the line. That's not on the coaches, no matter how much many on this forum wish it was because it's easier to blame coaches than to face the stark reality that we don't have the horses in key parts of our lineup. When max pro is being abused the screens and cross formation drag routes underneath are what's left and the Riders had clearly watched the film from last week and were well prepared and took those away. We needed an OL that could hold up a half second longer on many plays but were getting cleanly beat, ain't no chance when that happens. We were dominated in the trench war. That's a player thing not a coaching thing.

We had max pro most of the 2nd half. didn't help. That's not on the QB. We were helmet on helmet and couldn't protect with limited options underneath because that's what max pro does.

It is the damn near 40 yr old QB tho. He needs to get the ball out quicker. He doesn’t. Dude holds it holds it holds it, what about the blindside sacks or the ones up the gut? How doesn’t he see it? Dudes a 10 plus year vet who looks like a rookie we’d cut in camp when he’s facing pressure.

However, agreed about max protect and that says, the coaches saw it coming and eventho they saw it coming, the players couldn’t execute to stop it. Coaches coach during the week. Players play on game day. Bryant is cooked. Neufeld is also. Elsbury ain’t good enough for an American. Wallace has regressed. Not shocking really that we fold under pressure from guys 15 years younger.

If you can't block with max protect then don't run it and hit guys quick in open space? Sounds like a coaching adjustment...

Blitz pick-up primarily goes to the QB, but also to the C, and the pressured gap blocker. Especially the vets we have; they should be doing a much better job of identifying and calling out pre-snap alignment. Everyone knows how Zach is with pressure; we've made the calls at the line in the past with some of the same guys. They know what needs to happen.

A good chunk of blitz blame goes to Condell as well. Every week's install needs to have a few things, no matter who you play. One of the biggest needs each week is a package to counter pressure. The messed-up thing is that we have seen Condell do this very well with both Brown and Zach this year. One game each, he came ready with different fast-paced installs that beat pressure. The problem is, he packs his install with 1 concept. Fast 1-step drop with heavy pre-snap read requirements, or Quick screens and timing plays, etc. Instead of packing a Swiss Army knife each week, he packs 1 tool and uses it like a hammer. If it doesn't work, we are cooked. His offence doesn't even set up anything off that 1 basic concept. We could've used wheel routes and pump-and-goes and so much more in the two weeks we had success beating pressure with execution speed. That is how you really put teams away too. You beat a team with a concept a bit, then you counterpunch as soon as they show signs of adjusting and wallop them.

We used to see the play-action half roll screen option with jet/meteor sweep. Sometimes we slid protection and moved the pocket to disrupt the rush; sometimes it was a full bootleg, but it was always the crosser, the deep comeback, the quick dump-off to the jet guy in front, or the check down to the RB coming up from behind. It was bread and butter around here from late Lapo through Buck and Hogan. We've only seen it a couple of times this year, but it has worked well when we did it. Zach is extremely comfortable doing it, and it puts the D in a bind with who they cover.

We aren't gonna change Zach. And we aren't going to fix our OL mid-season. We need to run the offensive installs around those facts and build in extra padding for those thin areas. I fear we also aren't going to change Condell at this point. The only chance at building anything sustained with the offense is if control is taken from TC. Bring in someone, maybe Lapo, give play-calling duties over to Hogan, or my first choice, let Zach call the O.

it's up to the coaches to have the intelligence to teach and show...explain...heck do it themselves to get the point across if need be....Seen that first hand too... of even the most basic stuff at yes...the pro level. Also to recognize that this player...or that player is piss poor in tackling, blocking...recognition of say a blitz...and either "coach" them up....or put on the big boy pants which comes along with actual ability to evaluate talent...and or assess it.

We fail repeatedly in this regard...over and over and over. To say it's not the coach's fault or to throw blame at them for players failures, or inability to do the most basic things...game in and game out, many times it's the same culprits is laughable and one the poorest and dare I say stupidest excuses ever uttered here. They put these duds on the roster, they create the game plan and schemes, and should be doing things to suit particular talents of the guys they rostered. They run the practices to prepare a team for each game...and poor execution from players is from a lack of good preparation...inability to maximize a player(s) skill set...or the recognition that a particular player is just not good enough. That's all coaching failure...plain and simple.

@GCn20 you were on your soapbox saying that reason some guys are not getting a chance and rot on the PR or are imprisoned in a backup role or ST only is because they aren't any better...Your words not my putting in your mouth.

So just from the last game alone explain how Singer is not a better option than Cobb/Corcoran....and actually Nield too, to have had him parked on the PR all yr...despite many who saw practice...media...and coaches saying he just makes plays every day...tho your intel you said he not on roster because he is unimpressive in practice and isn't grasping the offence.

Same with Smith...whenever he got a chance he just made plays...is prob our best defender consistently overall and had to have guys get hurt to display that as an actual starter, and he is just a second yr guy...showing you don't need to stagnate a guy for 2..3 yrs..if you have talent and can play...you play

Same with Griffin..was apparent for better part of 2 yrs he was the best SAM option we had...yet wasn't given the job and wasn't due to a ratio requirement. But finally got to take in the role and was our best defender until he got hurt

Clercius as well....offers more and does more than Cobb...Corcoran...Neild, and Daniels...but alas he plays second and third fiddle until just recently...And it not a case of he "just figured it out" now....

All those examples and there are others point directly to the HC and his either inability to see what's the better option...refuses to see it to feed his bias....or just has no clue on how to evaluate talent to maximize his roster....which isn't a stretch when we see how with just the example of how he wastes DA spots game in and game out...for yrs now

Sure players need to make plays...but also if they are not prepared properly and working within a scheme that makes sense and actually works, then doesn't matter who is on field

That decision should've happened in the LDC too. But Mos will not do that unless zach is really hurt.

Part of the problem is our "max protect" install is worse than our 5-man + Brady. Part of that is running fewer/lower quality back up OL, part of that is not even using the guys we have well. Put Eli, MCI, and Clercius out with Brady. You can go 21, or 12 formation and put Clercius in a tight slot to make trips. Force the D to iso a guy, or give you a lopsided protection edge. You really need to be successful running out of that, though, because we don't have guys who can win 1on1 battles in the wr core.

Instead, we default primarily to a 6 wr empty backfield set with Brady doing little more than playing a distraction. And Ds are not biting on Brady lined up wide out anymore.

I mean, with all the empty backfield we run, why haven't we run a quick screen game to Brady from the wide-out spot? You are pushing guys out of the box; put Brady 1-on-1 in space with a DB.

and obviously he is not 100 percent mobility wise as he been braced up last 2 games (if nobody has noticed)...so is a sitting duck....but leave him in to get punished and try and do long developing plays.....foolish coaching given the flow of the game...they cant decipher game flow and how to manage, let alone combat it if it slapped them in the face

I also dont think Elsbury is calling out the right things...Rarely see him point out the MIKE or who occupies that spot in certain sets in order to call the blocking protection...nor is he recognizing what fronts the defence is showing to make the call for the guards to know their gap and man responsibilities, or if they have no initial responsibility and need to go second level and pick up a LB

all the free guys coming at our QB is from his inability to either see, or recognize any dline shift/loop or the showing of a last second blitz and changing protection call...be it to slide, scoop...gap and the whole line knows to adjust as a unit...all the confusion we see and at times them looking like keystone cops tells me the center isnt making the right blocking calls. And really what a shock for a raw "american" rookie seeing a lot of stuff for the first time...ever... and screwing that up...Makes sense cause so many times when the defences run different things we seem to not know who to block....That goes right back again to poor coaching and poor coaching decision with who's playing.

Our line has never looked worse...and there is a reason why....and the stupidest part of it is we are wasting a American spot sorely needed elswhere

ZC is gonna make the pre snap and overall audibles the center is the right hand/traffic cop in making the primary identification calls, and then any adjustments required based on what he see's...and he failing badly there....plus his snaps are all over map further messing up rhythm and timing

Whatever happened to the 'ol trick play' Bombers used to employ a long time ago....We have no desire to go in that direction but what we have become is too gawddamned predictable....We have also become too complacent and when a game change is needed, just stick with the same ol same ol...Other teams have figured us out....just wait us out till the second half because nothing will have changed....I don't know what the coaching staff actually talks about during the half-time but it isn't planning a 'change-up' on the opposition...Maybe we just don't have that capacity and if we don't WHY....The game plan seems to run similar to the 'roster' moves....stick with it until it runs aground ....Some of the reasons we aren't in a higher position in the standings

I don't think that is a blameworthy decision. I do think going for it gives you the best chance of winning, but that is also hotly contested.

For me, complete 1 offensive play of 5 yards, or hope your D can stop a td and or 2 point, then have the O drive for a major and/or score a 2-point. Possibly having to repeat that many times. I think going for it gives you the best chance of winning, but playing for OT gives you multiple chances to win.

After watching this team underachieve consistently over the past 2-ish years, I would not bet on the O and D coming together at just the right time and doing everything it takes to win the shootout.

The 2026 edition of the Bombers have given little reason for optimism. Should the TiCats go on a bit of a roll, Bombers are out of the playoffs.

On the other hand a few wins against Western opponents and we're in... Which isn't so far fetched. Couple plays go the other way wins against Edmonton and Saskatchewan were there for the taking in recent weeks.

Good teams beat other good teams in close games. Bad teams lose to them. I think we are at best a 9 and 9 team. Average. Maybe a miracle happens. They get in and catch lightning in a bottle. Do feel the crossover spot might be our best route tho to the final. Bombers have had 1 really good game and that was against Montreal. The rest have been wildly inconsistent.

Yeah, not even close to 100%. He isn't in the late stages of Nichols, but he makes decisions as if he can still go crazy legs, and he can't.

Elsbury is such a disappointment. He's a true rookie, so that is tough, but he shouldn't be starting at all. Its not easy, but you don't see imp interior OL that often either.

This is as bad as our OL has played since the first year bob took over coaching it.

Lets look at the roster deployment.

We focus heavily on special teams, and our special teams have for the most part been great.....

We also give Younger and the defence what appear to be all it wants, look at the depth, the rotation, the ratio he gets, then flip it to the offence.....

It seems like the whole offence is almost an after thought, 3 CDN receivers, CDN RB Ike to back up, but he is really a special teamer.....one back up Oline in Eli, and another CDN receivers to back up all , with a CDN rookie TE, who is still wet behind the ears.....

Now with a roster make up like this you would expect the specials to be great...and check mark, they are....but you should also expect your defence to be great....I mean if you allocate your resources so heavily into one faucet it should yield you big returns.....but our defence isn't yielding those big returns ....not equal to the allocation of assets anyway ...

So what do we do, do we keep giving our specials everything they need, do we keep allocating what's left over almost exclusively to the defence.....or do we look at the offence and try to balance our portfolio better, and see if the losses from pulling a guy or two from specials and/or defence to get a guy like Singer on the roster....does adding a guy like Singer give you a net bigger return overall????

Sure seems like it does.....so the burning question is.....why didn't we try weeks ago....and will we try moving forward or does Singer get SAT again when we are healthy in favour of specials and defence.....yet again.....
