US Politics

Lets see if we can keep this thread a little more civil.

I found this interview very interesting.  A lot of soft balls thrown at Trump, he explained his back pedalling on his more extreme issues as a lot of his claims as opening bids for negotiation purposes.  Which .. whatever .. I still think that those are insincere claims he used to get elected.

He does now come across way more presidential then he did prior to the election.  A lot of his noise, yelling, and rhetoric has been scaled back.

Do respect this one though:

Quote

Lesley Stahl: Are you gonna take the salary, the president’s salary?

Donald Trump: Well, I’ve never commented on this, but the answer is no. I think I have to by law take $1, so I’ll take $1 a year. But it’s a -- I don’t even know what it is.

Donald Trump: Do you know what the salary is?

Lesley Stahl: $400,000 you’re giving up.

Donald Trump: No, I’m not gonna take the salary. I’m not taking it.

Paul Krugman: GOP would ‘cheer on’ Trump if he launched ‘a military coup’

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman on Friday warned that it’s wrong to compare President Donald Trump to President Richard Nixon, on the grounds that Trump is far worse and more dangerous.

Krugman acknowledges that there are some similarities between Trump and Nixon, such as their willingness to use racial grievance to gain power and their cavalier attitude toward obeying the law. But Krugman thinks that the biggest difference between Trump and Nixon is that the Republican Party of 2020 is not the same as the Republican Party that pushed Nixon out in 1974.

Conservative journalist caught on video pretending to board up a business for an Instagram pic

As protests continue nationwide, some volunteers are coming together to clean up and rebuild areas affected by looting, arson, and vandalism. Worldwide, social media is being used to share images, resources, and views on the issues of racial injustice and the Black Lives Matter movement. Unfortunately, some people are using this time to gain social media popularity and pose as contributing to efforts to rebuild and care for the community.

A video of a woman in California pretending to help board up a store window went viral Monday after it was shared on Twitter. “This lady stopped someone boarding up a store in Santa Monica so she could hold the drill for a picture, then drove away. Please don’t do this,” the post read. Commenters including a staff member from The New York Times identified the woman as Fiona Moriarty-McLaughlin, a writer for the conservative Washington Examiner.

Trump Shares Letter Saying White House Protesters Are 'Terrorists'. The letter also attacks former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis for criticizing the president.

President Donald Trump shared a letter on Twitter from one of his attorneys that describes the protesters outside the White House as “terrorists.”

Trump said the letter from John Dowd, who represented him during part of the Russia investigation, was “of interest to the American people.”

Maine's largest newspaper has something to say:

Our View: To President Trump: You should resign now

He lacks the character, maturity and judgment to lead the country in a perilous time.

President Trump: We’re sorry that you decided to come to Maine, but since you are here, could you do us a favor? Resign.

You have never been a good president, but today your shortcomings are unleashing historic levels of suffering on the American people.

Your slow response to the coronavirus pandemic has spun a manageable crisis into the worst public health emergency since 1918

We are also in the middle of the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression. There is no national strategy to recover from the shock that is disproportionately affecting people who were already struggling to make it.

And in the face of the worst civic unrest since 1968, with millions of Americans in the streets protesting systemic racism, you fan the flames.

In just the last week you gleefully tweeted about shooting fellow citizens; you goaded governors into escalating violent situations so they don’t “look like jerks;” and you authorized the use of rubber bullets and tear gas to clear peaceful protesters out of a public space so you could pose for a Bible-waving photo-op.

These are just a few examples of why you lack the character, maturity and judgment to lead our country in this perilous time. You should resign.

We have to agree with you on one point: You were right to skip making an address to the nation as other presidents have done in times of national emergency.

You correctly concluded that you have nothing to say that would make the situation better. When what’s called for is compassion, clear vision and a commitment to lead, you are out of ammo.

But bringing the nation together in times of distress is a big part of the job when you are head of state. You can’t do it, so you should resign.

As head of government, you have unmatched power to direct resources to relieve suffering. You can’t or won’t do that, either, so you should resign.

And in your mistreatment of lawful protesters and abuse of religious symbols, you have violated your oath to protect and defend the Constitution, so you should resign.

Your supporters will no doubt say that this is an election year, and it should be left up to the voters to decide whether you deserve to stay in office.

But ask yourself – can this country take five more months like the last five? You are a president supported by a minority of the people, and your only path to victory in November is to further divide the nation. This campaign could do even more lasting damage than you have done already.

We know that you are not much of a student of history, but you recently said that you “learned a lot from Richard Nixon.”

That’s good, because he set the historical precedent for what you should do now.

In a nationally televised address, Nixon said that he knew that he was about to be impeached over Watergate, and he wanted to fight the charges.

But since that would be destructive to the nation he served, he chose instead to resign. Nixon said: “By taking this action,  I hope that I will have hastened the start of that process of healing which is so desperately needed in America.”

America needs to heal again. Please resign now, and let us begin.

Four—Yes, Four—Texas Republican Party Officials Have Shared Racist George Floyd Posts, Says Report

Reuters / Jason Reed
Four Republican Party officials in Texas have shared racist Facebook posts about George Floyd and the nationwide protests sparked by his death in police custody, the Texas Tribune reports. The first two—the GOP chairs in Bexar and Nueces counties—reportedly shared a conspiracy theory that Floyd’s death was “staged” to undermine President Trump’s re-election. The third, the GOP chairman-elect in Harris County, Keith Nielsen, reportedly posted an image that showed a Martin Luther King Jr. quote on a background with a banana. The fourth, from Chairwoman of the Comal County GOP Sue Piner, reportedly shared an image of billionaire George Soros with the caption: “I pay white cops to murder black people. And then I pay black people to riot because race wars keep the sheep in line.” Despite some calls to resign from inside the party, all four currently remain in their posts.

It has gotten to the point where this is just another bizarre event in this bizarre administration and not even anywhere near the top of the WFT list.

It's not even the weirdest, most efd up thing that happened on that day. This would be a national scandal if any previous administration had done this.

It's just crumbling as we watch.

What the GOP is a racist organization? Shocking.

Maybe they should be investigated to be put on the global terrorist list?

You would think.

Trump Shushes Black Reporter Asking What He’s Doing About Systemic Racism

During a rambling news conference in which he took a victory lap over last month’s surprising jobs report, President Donald Trump shushed a black reporter for asking how he plans to address systemic racism amid the George Floyd protests.

As Trump prepared to sign a PPP reform bill, PBS correspondent Yamiche Alcindor wondered why the president didn’t have a racial inequality-related plan laid out, prompting Trump to put a finger to his lips as he said “shhh.”

Family Harassed and Trapped in WA Campsite After Being Accused of Being Antifa Members

A multi-racial family who tried to go camping in Forks, Washington were allegedly harassed and threatened by locals who accused them of being antifa members coming to riot. The Spokane family of four told Clallam County sheriff’s deputies that seven or eight carloads of people confronted them in a parking lot on Wednesday when they stopped to buy camping supplies. The family assured the group they were not antifa members but were just camping.

At least four cars, some of which appeared to have people carrying semi-automatic rifles, followed the family as they drove to the campsite. As they pitched a tent, the family reported hearing gunshots and power saws. They decided to leave but found trees had been cut down to block the road out. Four local high-school students ended up calling police and using chainsaws to help clear the roadway for the family, the sheriff’s department said in a statement. A cirmnal investigation is underway.
