US Politics

Lets see if we can keep this thread a little more civil.

I found this interview very interesting.  A lot of soft balls thrown at Trump, he explained his back pedalling on his more extreme issues as a lot of his claims as opening bids for negotiation purposes.  Which .. whatever .. I still think that those are insincere claims he used to get elected.

He does now come across way more presidential then he did prior to the election.  A lot of his noise, yelling, and rhetoric has been scaled back.

Do respect this one though:

Quote

Lesley Stahl: Are you gonna take the salary, the president’s salary?

Donald Trump: Well, I’ve never commented on this, but the answer is no. I think I have to by law take $1, so I’ll take $1 a year. But it’s a -- I don’t even know what it is.

Donald Trump: Do you know what the salary is?

Lesley Stahl: $400,000 you’re giving up.

Donald Trump: No, I’m not gonna take the salary. I’m not taking it.

That has got to be a crime, if it's accurate.

Can't be true can it?

Impeach now.

Id question the security around the Aid carrying teh football too.  How was a civilian allowed to approach him and take photos, with the guy smiling no less.  It sounds like anyone through the doors at Mar-a-Lago have free reign.  What stops someone from sticking a steak knife in Trump's throat?

I love that Trump is trying to change the Flynn narrative to the "leaks".  This is a guy who wanted leaks about Hilary, who publicly implored Russia to hack her and leak the information.  Now he's mad that his inner circle are leaking important information about the the compromised state of his NSA.

I wonder what would tip the scales for the Republicans to actually move on Trump.  There is speculation circling that Pence power-played to get rid of Flynn against Trump's wishes.

When Obama took office, the concern was whether he'd be allowed to keep his Blackberry.  Seems quaint now.

I wonder how many Trump voters have buyer's remorse yet... Man, I miss having an adult in the WH.

A vaguely wrestling relayed story but more a US politics story.

During the FBI investigation into the Hulk Hogan sex tape, it was revealed that Bubba (who secretly recorded people having sex with his wife) may have been in possession of a General Petaeus sex tape

General Perraeus is on Trump's short list for new NSA

These buffoon-nincompoop ignoramus - egotistical fools have the nuclear launch final say.

This is precisely why we need to get rid of all nuclear weapons.

It's past being funny......American democracy is failing.

Been in the US for almost a week now.  The only time I've heard Trump mentioned was in a discussion with a waiter, once at a comedy show where mention of Trump's name  and discussion of his policies (the comedian was Latino btw) elicited a big cheer from the crowd and then another time at dinner where I heard a man and his wife bashing Trump like crazy.  I thought "finally, I'm hearing all of this American anger towards Trump I hear so much about in Canada", only to find out that the couple were actually from Toronto.  I don't think American democracy is failing.  For all of the world anger and celebrity pouting, all I am hearing here in the actual US is people expressing their thankfulness that the guy they elected is doing what he said he was going to do.

KBF, where are you?

As for democracy failing, we've all had a lesson in American division of powers in the past few days ... Trump people clowning up the White House and being checked by the courts ... the private media holding their feet to the fire and aggressively soliciting leaks from insiders .. and some senators -- ruthless alpha-male Republicans who have been in Washington forever, guys like Roy Blunt .. are rumbling about Senator investigations into Russian penetration of the White House.

You can kind of see the founding fathers' design at work -- divide up power between enough ambitious assholes and they'll hold each other accountable.

It will be interesting to see if GOP-on-GOP violence continues or escalates. Their discipline has been remarkable since the Gingrich / Clinton era.

Ah, makes sense now. Those weren't cheers, those were jeers of derision.

Intercepted calls show members of the Trump campaign had repeated contact with Russian intelligence before the election, officials said

WASHINGTON — Phone records and intercepted calls show that members of Donald J. Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and other Trump associates had repeated contacts with senior Russian intelligence officials in the year before the election, according to four current and former American officials.

Holy crap. That first sentence is journalist porn.

And 19% of the state Russian energy company was just sold to an unnamed purchaser .. and Trump still refuses to show his tax returns (this is custom in the USA, but is not law, and it's about vetting the Presidential finances to make sure that they won't be beholden to outside or financial interests) and the US IC is yelling at anyone who will listen that the Putin regime deliberately interfered in the election.

Interesting times.

So, no sushi this week?

Polls show a general split between for and against so I'm not surprised the streets aren't filled with anti trump protestors.  Doesn't really mean anything either.

As for Russia aren't we basically accepting  the obvious here? Trump entered into a quid pro quo with Putin and is now at best owes him one. At worst completely compromised.
