  1. And that's why Huffer is the heir-apparent to Wally the Whiz.
  2. I'm gonna argue that one. Kelly had crap for quarterbacks which led to a terrible offence but he treated fans and media with contempt. Burke was just utterly clueless and he knew it.
  3. Possibly so, but in the swagger days, we had a pretty good set of linebackers. The linemen could just pin their ears back and charge knowing that if anyone slipped past them, they wouldn't get far. Hurl doesn't have to be an all-star but he has to be at least average for this to work, and he hasn't been so far.
  4. We are all destined to disappear into history, but what we leave behind is what matters.
  5. The difference between Kelly and Burke was that Kelly sort of knew the game but was arrogant, condescending and abrasive whereas Burke was totally clueless and right from day one had the attitude of someone waiting for the guillotine.
  6. To counter your point- how many quarterbacks are remembered as good to great if they couldn't string together enough wins to make two consecutive seasons or more? How many times have you said, "Good quarterback but loses a lot of games?" Mitchell might not have won as many games in green livery, but he still would have been a good quarterback and put together strong seasons.
  7. The man is dead. You don't have to insult him.
  8. One of the most colourful/polarizing/brilliant figures in the CFL's history. Thank you Don, for all you did to make this an entertaining and occasionally infuriating game.
  9. Dark days indeed. Those were the times I actually turned the TV off in disgust, but somehow managed to keep my gorge down long enough to watch the post-game highlights/lowlights. It was like watching your 8 year old kid being beaten up by a teenager but helpless to intervene beyond impotent rage.
  10. I would suggest that in order for a quarterback to be validated as a good pivot, he would have to string together at least 2 consecutive good seasons.
  11. The "having to prove himself" thingie is true to an extent. The CFL and even the NFL have had a lot of one-hit/one season wonders who amazed and then disappointed, Nichols doesn't necessarily have to win the Grey cup but he does have to play as he did for the last half of the season. The bar has been raised for him and the team.
  12. I think you are missing the point. The question was really about the initial assessment of Apodaca as a potential CFL quarterback.
  13. Its a bit of a puzzlement that a QB could show enough potential to be flown all the way here but yet not be good enough to be kept past the first pre-season game.
  14. I suggest that it wasn't Wally who beat the bushes to find these QB's, but the scouting team. Wally can separate the sheep from the goats and fine-tune the QB's he selects, but we really need to amp up the scouting. At this point, McManus and Goveia rate a B- or a C+ as pretty average recruiters. I find it discouraging that in three years, the scouting hasn't found a promising QB beyond Bennett, who is still a question mark in spite of the vast talent of Chris Jones to assess players.
  15. And this is different than most threads how?
  16. On behalf of all sofa tubers, I resemble that remark!
  17. I would hope that there was some "intensity" at practice today, because there wasn't much of that during a lot of the Rider game on Saturday. No doubt that was why O'Shea was ticked after the game.
  18. Should Richie Hall get the bullet, he will not be alone. There have been concerns about Hall both here and in the media for a couple of years now, and O'Shea has kept him on. There is no doubt about O'Shea's character or passion, but his judgement- not so much.
  19. Both teams looked scary good on offence, even with their B teams. Walters and O'Shea have their work cut out.
  20. Hard to know what to take away from the game, what with having only the radio broadcast, plus it being a pre-season game and all. It does sound like Davis and LeFevour are viable options if Nichols struggles or is injured. The D-line and O-lines sound solid already, the receivers are still work in progress, and the D-backs are, um, questionable at the moment. However, the point of the game was to audition players and a thorough thumping of the Riders would have been icing on the cake.
  21. The highest bid may not be the best option. If, as others here have posed, the Bombers get buried under NHL and MLB coverage, that would cost the Bombers in their profile in the community. If Bob Irving does not want to be part of the package, that would be doubly bad.
  22. Appreciate what you have before it turns into what you had.
  23. Yup. I keep hoping for another Russ Jackson, but the deck seems to be stacked against homegrown pivots. I would love to see a position reserved for NI quarterbacks that did not count against the roster or salary cap so as to give time for development.
