Yup. An island, moments of sanity and familiarity in an otherwise often chaotic and threatening world.

Sounds like a child moving away to college.

You HAD to ruin it, didn't you?

A helpful tip I learned as a first responder in rural areas: If you are about to hit a deer, or other wildlife while you are driving, do NOT EVER try to miss it. The natural reflexive movement is to crank the steering wheel over and then you are heading into the ditch at high speed with your front wheels turned sharply to the right. As your front wheels dig into the ditch, your momentum will cause the vehicle to barrel-roll or, worse yet do an endo. Your survival chances are much, much better if you hit the unfortunate creature dead center. If you have no option but to go into the ditch, point your front wheels straight ahead. And remember, ANYTHING, ANYTHING is preferable to a head-on collision. Saved my bacon a couple of times.

That's why moats were created. We already have Duff's ditch, so we are halfway there aleady.

'A major milestone': Pfizer's COVID pill is a huge step forward — but it will be 'scarce' at first The United States on Wednesday authorized Pfizer Inc’s antiviral COVID-19 pill for at-risk people aged 12 and above, making it the first oral treatment and which can be taken at home, providing a potentially important tool in the fight against the fast-spreading Omicron variant. Pfizer’s antiviral regimen, Paxlovid, was nearly 90 percent effective in preventing hospitalizations and deaths in patients at high risk of severe illness, according to data from the company’s clinical trial. Recent lab data suggests the drug retains its effectiveness against Omicron, Pfizer said. “We’re talking about a staggering number of lives saved and hospitalizations prevented. And of course, if you deploy this quickly after infection, we are likely to reduce transmission dramatically,” Pfizer Chief Scientific Officer Mikael Dolsten said, calling it “a stunning outcome.” Pfizer raised its 2022 production projections to 120 million courses of treatment from 80 million and said it was ready to start immediate delivery in the United States. The treatment’s two-drug regimen includes a new medicine and a second older antiviral called ritonavir. READ: Trump is rapidly moving toward a confession about his high crimes against America “Paxlovid’s approval is a major milestone that marks another step towards making COVID-19 a much more manageable infection,” said Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Health Security. “There are two key issues, however, that remain: It will be scarce in the coming weeks and its optimal use requires prompt diagnosis, which can be difficult with the continual testing problems that plague us,” Adalja added.

Staying close to home with a very limited gathering of family and friends. This sucks, but if this is the price for both staying safe (wife is immuno-compromised) and keeping others safe, so be it.

Trivia: the misnamed "Spanish Flu" was traced back to a US army base mess cook in Kansas who passed it along to all of the soldiers who then deployed to Europe, the first ones arriving in Spain.

Agreed. He is the exact opposite of what the Elks need, so we ought to get ready for a tumultuous season of drama there. -
Would love to see him arrested in the middle of this farce.

The biggest problem in the US currently is the timidity of the Biden administration and the way the GOP has gamed the judicial system. This has led people like Trump, Stone, Miller and Flynn to believe that they are untouchable.

Dallas QAnon ‘Cult’ Is Now Drinking Terrifying Chemical Cocktail, Family Says -Reuters QAnon acolytes in Dallas are now drinking toxic chemicals from a communal punch bowl, according to the family of a woman who joined the Texas “cult” that’s waiting for the supposed resurrection of President John F. Kennedy and his late son, JFK Jr. Numerous members of the Leek family told the Dallas Observer that the woman, who reportedly abandoned her husband and children in Delaware last month to follow Trump-supporting QAnon leader Michael Brian Protzman to Dallas, has been quaffing a mixture containing chlorine dioxide—industrial bleach—which she apparently distributes among the group. “She was proud to tell us that she was the one mixing it up and giving it to everybody,” one of her relatives told the outlet. The woman got into the QAnon movement back in 2018, said her son, Sean Leek, who was unable to be reached by The Daily Beast on Monday. While the family didn’t specify why the group was drinking the potent chemical mixture, they said their relative is an ardent anti-vaxxer. “She’s always been into, you know, natural remedies, getting aluminum out of deodorant, things like that,” Leek said in a Dec. 10 interview. “But that led to anti-vaxxing, and anti-vaxxing led to QAnon.” According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), chlorine dioxide has “not been shown to be safe and effective for any use, including COVID-19, but these products continue to be sold as a remedy for treating autism, cancer, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and flu, among other conditions, despite their harmful effects.” It is sold online under various names, including “Miracle Mineral Solution,” “Miracle Mineral Supplement,” “Master Mineral Solution,” and “Chlorine Dioxide Protocol.” Ingestion can lead to respiratory failure, potentially fatal abnormal heart rhythms, life-threateningly low blood pressure, acute liver failure, and the rapid destruction of red blood cells. Members of a Florida family hawking chlorine dioxide through their Genesis II Church of Health and Healing in Bradenton were arrested by federal agents in 2020. They reportedly earned more than $1 million from sales of their “miracle” elixir.

Omicron Is Now The Dominant COVID-19 Variant In The U.S. NEW YORK (AP) — Omicron has raced ahead of other variants and is now the dominant version of the coronavirus in the U.S., accounting for 73% of new infections last week, federal health officials said Monday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention numbers showed nearly a six-fold increase in omicron’s share of infections in only one week. In much of the country, omicron’s prevalence is even higher. It’s responsible for an estimated 90% of new infections in the New York area, the Southeast, the industrial Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. Since the end of June, the delta variant has been the main version causing U.S. infections. As recently as the end of November, more than 99.5% of coronaviruses were delta, according to CDC data. Scientists in Africa first sounded the alarm about omicron less than a month ago and on Nov. 26 the World Health Organization designated it as a “variant of concern.” The mutant has since shown up in about 90 countries.
