  1. Interesting debate on CJOB. Feedback seems to be that judy did herself no favours. She was evasive, defensive and badgered Bowman repeatedly. She did what she often does by talking in circles rather than answering a direct question to the extent that Cloutier even tried to pin her down to a yes/no answer about the PST. She refused, then claimed she answered the questioned and tried to badger Bowman to answer,. She said Bowman promised to cut the budget by 10% which she then had to admit was untrue and apologied. She accused Bowman of hiding his conservative support, specifically stating he was endorsed by Filmon and "met with Peter McKay". This was moments after Bowman himself said he was proud to have the support of the Filmon's and glad to meet with McKay. It sounded like she had a pre-determined shot to make about the conservative support but Bowman beat her to it so she simply stuck to the script and looked pretty stupid. Adler doing the hard push for Bowman now. Made a good point. Do you want a Mayor that works for Winnipeggers or a Mayor that works for the NDP? There will be many people who will be fine with her working for the NDP. But many who wont be. Another good point Adler made was how Bowman didnt hesitate when being asked who he'd vote for if he couldnt vote for himself. he said he'd vote for Falcon. Many Falcon supporters will be considering their options on Wednesday and might switch to Bowman.
  2. So the latest polling shows Bowman a smidge ahead of Judy and Steeves falling fast, now behind The Falcon. If Bowman upsets Judy, it will be one of the great political stories of our time in Winnipeg. I dont feel bad for Gord. He had the chance to bow out graciously a few weeks ago and couldnt read the tea leaves (or the polling).
  3. Boardwalk Empire is down to one episode and it's been tremendous this season. Usually flashbacks are lame and a cheap way to use up time (especially in a final season where you'd want to focus on the "present" day characters) but the BE flashbacks are awesome. The young guy they got to play Nucky is awesome. On a side note, the showrunner of BE was a writer on Sopranos and those flashbacks were really good too.
  4. Im usually a glass-half-full guy and while Rinne and Hillier were both good, the Jets have shown little effort and passion. It raises the old question about the heart of the core of the team. Blake Wheeler is out there fighting guys, cross checking guys, skating around with a scowl on his face. What's Andrew Ladd doing?
  5. The worst thing about tonight's game was the playing of Turndown For What after every friggen play.
  6. You're right. Ladd little buff Kane sheif etc etc etc are ahl players. Panic in the streets.
  7. The old "tank" the season thread. Never seen it so early in the season. Pathetic.
  8. I absolutely agree that MPI doesn't do enough to lower rates. That's the issue. As the public insurer they *should* charge rates only enough to break even. Of course they need to plan for unforeseen issues. But when they have profits and rainy day funds they should be lowering rates not investing the money in all sorts of things and advertising?? They're a monopoly. .
  9. The only way Willy doesnt play if he *could* play is if he's hurt but willing to gut it out and Brohm is tremendous this week. *THEN* maybe they say f*ck it, let Willy heal up. But even then, I doubt it. Some players can lose their job to injury. Your young starting QB that has every sign of being a franchise player? He doesnt lose his job. Period.
  10. I have to be honest. Im glad MPI isnt providing any sort of subsidy for winter tires. If they wanted to provide a rate reduction for those that have tires, well I guess that would be up to their internal numbers to show a reduction in claims for cars with winter tires. I assume they dont have numbers that bear that out.
  11. Judy will win. She automatically gets the NDP vote and though they are not as popular, she makes up for it from the segment of the population that will vote for the name they recognize. But last election her popularity was overblown. We can only hope it still is. Good point about Bowman. A lot of times a person that appeals to young voters seems to have momentum...until election day and they dont vote. Hopefully that is not the case. Steeves has actually been pretty well treated by local media who seem to not make much of his repeated no-shows at forums (he missed another one last night). Bowman declined (or ignored) one interview request and has been terribly dogged on social media for it. Steeves rountinely misses forums and gets a pass. He's done well the past week as his campaign is more focused in attacking Bowman and Judy. But Steeves is the "Opposite Candidate". His image is simply the guy opposing whatever the frontrunners pledge. Empty suit candidate.
  12. Bowman will be very hard-pressed to defeat Judy but he's got momentum right now. The polling means very little. I'd suspect the polls are probably a fairly good indication of the strength of the candidates but I wouldnt trust the actual numbers. If you remember last election it had Sammy and Judy neck and neck "too close to call" and Sammy trounced her. So its possible, if unlikely, that Bowman is closer to Judy than the polls indicate. On the other hand, Judy could steamroll to victory. I think the key thing will be if the right-of-judy voters come together behind Bowman. I've had a few friends say to me that they dont know who to vote for but dont want Judy. My reply is always well, if you believe that Bowman is in second place and you're strongly opposed to Judy, then you have to vote for Bowman. Steeves continues to strike as a guy who has no real political will. His platform seems designed to be opposite of the leaders. If Judy came out and said she was against BRT, Steeves would support it. He tweeted yesterday that his plan to sell of golf courses would create X amount of park space...though if he sells them, isnt it up to the new owners to decide? I just dont feel great about the idea to sell off assets especially as a means to finance infrastructure improvements and keep a tax freeze because you cant sell assets every year forever. Seems like a short term gain.
  13. The injury to Kane has really impacted our forward depth. The Big Show had a good discussion this morning about Thorburn (who I mentioned in another thread). I think the use of Thorburn is a weakness of this franchise where they want to be the nice, family oriented team. Im sure Thorbs is a great guy. He works hard. I didnt mind his contract because I figured they were rewarding a great character guy by giving him a career contract where he'd continue to be a character guy making the locker room a great place while he played 50-60 games on the fourth line. But the fact he's the guy that moves up to the third line? Come on. The reason we signed Galiardi was for forward depth. Use him. Halischuk is the number two option and has more finish then Thorbs. I saw somewhere else where it was suggested to recall Ehlers for 9 games to replace Kane. I didnt think that was possible, but apparently it is. That wouldnt be my first choice but it wouldnt upset me either. Personally, I'd recall Klingberg and use his size and speed on 3RW way before I'd put Thorbs there. The improvement this year was supposed to be precipitated by the fact we could roll three scoring lines. Out of the gate now and we seem resigned to the third line being a glorified checking line. Not good enough.
  14. Its hard to watch because of what we've been through. But MOS is obviously going to get a lot of rope. But you definitely want to see some progress with him also. He's popular but that doesnt mean he's going to be a great HC.
  15. I cant see how MC becomes the fall guy with an O-line this horrendous. He'll get another season.
  16. The real joke is listing the franchise low record as 10,000. These failed markets announce attendance as however many tickets they've distributed. So if they sell 5,000 tickets and give away 5,000 more, they announce attendance as 10,000. Its a joke. This season, the Panthers claim they will not count paper in the official attendance. I still think its a joke, but lets assume the 7,000 person announcement is true, thats not a decline. Thats just what they always drew minus the lies they told. Even then, Im sure they've had nights with barely a couple thousand people. The NHL is so protective of it's image as a stable league. You've got the Coyotes who were sold last year to a group that vowed they could make it work. They promptly lose $25 million in year one and sell 51 % of the team. They have an out clause that is triggered if they lose $50 million. They will hit that mark this year. Bettman wants to get to the point where non-ticket revenue allows these poor market teams to make it work but im not sure the Coyotes and Panthers can hang on until the next US TV contract in, what, ten years? The other issue is the salary floor requirements. The Panthers would surely limp along with a payroll of $30 milion if they could.
  17. I don't get the love for Thorburn. I like him. But if he plus anything more than limited fourthine minutes your team is in deep trouble. Putting him on the top two lines is such a handicap for the skilled players.
  18. If a crown corp makes a profit that profit should be used to the benefit of the business. If the business does not need the profit then rates should be dropped. By raiding Hydro profits the NDP create a situation that puts rate payers at risk. I realize no one will convince a person who supports the NDP way of doing things. It's a difference in vision.
  19. How does one rob one's self? Is Harper robbing the CBC to balance the budget? I'm quite certain you understand the point. I guess if you believe hydro shouldn't operate independently of the provincial government in an effort to best serve rate payers then your perspective would be that their revenue should go into the governments pocket. Many of us feel differently.
  20. Apparently it was his hand and he returned to the bench after receiving treatment.
  21. They just sold majority of the team http://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/nhl/coyotes/2014/10/10/arizona-coyotes-reach-agreement-to-make-andrew-barroway-majority-owner/17059937/
  22. Exactly. The NDP didn't truly balance a budget when they robbed hydro. There certainly was a difference between doer and Selinger though.
