Good article by Justin Dunk. He usually has pretty reliable sources.
    https://3downnation.com/2020/08/17/the-cfl-wanted-to-be-treated-different-than-every-other-canadian-citizen/
    Key quote:
According to sources, the league could have landed a loan, which had the potential to max out at $60 million, with a four-year payback period and increasing interest rates each time the calendar flipped over that topped out in the seven percent range. The same loan financing programs are available for eligible businesses in the mid-market program. However, the league said no thanks and continued on its quest for interest-free money.
Two things - First, seems like the "high interest loan" cries might have been BS. topping out at 7% is a reasonable loan.
Second - You have to wonder if maybe the private owners (Montreal, Toronto, BC) have been directing Ambrosie. Never seemed like they wanted to have a shortened season, and maybe they don't want to be on the hook for a 4 year loan. Maybe they're the ones floating the "high interest loan" story and pushing for an interest free loan.
    Bad times for the CFL.

I'm okay with shutting things down for 2020 and putting everything they've got into making sure there's a 2021. It sounds like the feds are fully committed to making sure the CFL stays alive. The league, and all of its member clubs, will have to open up every book and show the government everything, but I think they'll find a way. As Naylor said, the single most important thing will be figuring out if they will be able to have fans next year. Impossible without that.

In his hey day, Marty York was great for the CFL. He was always coming out with stories in the Globe & Mail about the CFL & scoops. The guy still loves the CFL but has no love for the other sports teams in Toronto, especially the Blue Jays. If we had more Marty Yorks in the national media this league would be in a lot better place on the Canadian sports landscape.  The CFL certainly would be relevant in Toronto.  I follow him on twitter.

Tough call....no money piss off football fans....give the money and piss off the non sports fans...tough to win that one. I like to think if there had of been an agreement worked out between the PA and the CFL in July perhaps there would have been a better chance of a loan. Perhaps too much indecision.

Ambrosie should be gone by the end of the week. He has bungled this badly from the beginning.
    - Went to Gov't without a plan.
    - Went to Gov't without communicating with the PA.
    - Has kept everyone in the dark throughout this.
    - Ignored the fans.

Last time I checked Trudeau wasn’t responsible for negotiating an agreement between the CFL and the CFLPA.

I guess that is a credit to Walters , O’Shea and the coaching staff....as well as the Equipment and Medical Staff. The individuals who are in constant daily contact with the players. Thanks to them for all they have done.

Speed, your argument in defence of Miller seems to be a bit of a moving target, so let's get back to your original point that people disagree with.
You think Miller will be less hostile than Ambrosie in player negotiations. The counter-point is that he won't be because his personality is one of "my way or the highway". You then shift and say if he was hard to work for, people would have quit on him. That misses the point. In CBA negotiations, the players and their association are not working for him, they are working with him at best, or negotiating against him if spun in a more negative way. You then agree that he is a hard ass and control freak, which is what people were saying in the first place, but your argument shifts from "he'd be a better commish because he is less confrontational" to "his confrontational style worked for the Bombers because they won", which is another topic altogether. So if you think that style will work, OK, but that was not your point. You just want another reason to slag on Ambrosie IMO and use Miller as a better alternative (he may be) but your reasoning that he will be more conciliatory in negotiations seems way off if you want to make that the key point of your argument that he will be better.

At some point the CFL and the PA must learn to work as a partnership in co operation. This adversarial relationship has been brought to a head by Covid. It was a smouldering fire that has become a full blown inferno. Season or not there has to be a lesson learned by both sides moving forward.

I do know that the creator of the Extra Point left the Bombers under Miller's tenure. I can't say for sure, but I got the impression it wasn't on the best of terms. Is that a direct result of Miller? Don't know...but the timing adds up. My cousin was the manager of the Bomber store at the stadium and he said Miller was a tough guy to work for. Didn't slag him but said he is a my way or the highway kind of guy.

Good news emerged Friday in the quest for government funding for a CFL season, as the federal government’s Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Howard Njoo told Dan Ralph of the Canadian Press that Health Canada was reviewing the hub city protocols proposed by the CFL and had a positive outlook.

Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Howard Njoo calls CFL hub city plan ‘encouraging’

After coming to no decision on a season after meeting on Thursday, Ralph reports that the CFL board of governors will hold a rare videoconference on back-to-back days on Friday. The clock is ticking on the possibility of a CFL season, but it also appears the action is heating up.

You're both bang on about the CFL and CFLPA. I'm sure both have some responsibility in how fractured the relationship is, but, it has to stop. This is a pro league teetering on the edge. It's collaborate or die really.
Ambrosie certainly deserves the criticism he's getting, but, I still think his CFL 2.0 global player idea had some potential as a revenue source pre-COVID. Untapped potential TV, streaming fan bases if a few global players actually became CFL stars.

The CFL and CFLPA most develop a better working relationship-partnership. This latest example of what appears to be an adversarial relationship is simply another example of how unproductive it continues to be.

Good discussion around this topic. It's a really complex issue because I agree that the 1 year CFL contracts for players then walking to the NFL is not working as a long term CFL strategy. Tough for teams to manage, sucks for fans. And, I agree that the NFL really doesn't have any interest in financially compensating the CFL in any way.
Realistically, what incentive does the NFL have to compensate the CFL in any way? With increasing practice roster sizes and hundreds of new college players coming out every year, why do they need any type of "farm system"? And honestly, it's not as if the CFL typically provides them with elite NFL talent. The Cameron Wake's are very rare. Mostly CFL players who make the NFL end up at the bottom of a team's roster. Easily replaced by a late round NFL draft pick or a UDFA.
I'm not criticizing anyone's take on this. It's a complicated issue. The CFL has to figure out a better model for building revenue and retaining players on it's own.

The last time the CFL sold their soul to the NFL it got into the NFL window BS and the NFL simply cherry picking players. It wasn’t out of kindness or being a benevolent. Big Brother....it was pure business. No thanks.
