If you're going to quote my whole post you also might as well read the whole thing.

I didn't agree with the call, but I'm also not going to pretend Medlock kicking 61 yards is preposterous.  He will have tried a bunch of distances in warm up.  He might have hit a 55 yarder already that day with leg to spare when the cameras weren't on.

History agrees with you?  What does that even mean?  Prior to 1903, history agreed with people who thought humans could and would never fly.  It's obviously a long difficult kick.  He had to hit it perfect.  He didn't.  Given his performance this year and in his career, I understand why the coach would put his faith in him.  He's hit a lot of kicks perfectly in his career.

The reason, once again, that I'm passing in that situation is the time left on the clock, not because of history.  I have no trouble believing Medlock can make history.  He's already the best kicker in league history.

I did read the whole thing mbrg. Your splitting hairs by saying it isn't preposterous to ask him to kick a 61 yard field goal.

The reality is, asking a guy to kick a 61 yard field goal when there is a better option is not smart football because the odds are not on your side.

The reality is, in the history of the CFL only one man has kicked a field goal more than 60 yards and that was with a wind at Taylor field.

Was it preposterous? Kind of, since it's only been done one time in the history of the CFL.

If there's no time on the clock sure, you take any desperate attempt that you can. But with time left on the clock it's a bad decision to try and kick the second longest field goal in CFL history when all you need is 4 yards for a first down.

History means nothing because it's not something that has a large enough sample size. How many kicks did Medlock make from 50 with 10 yards to spare? I bet it was quite a few. The guy has the leg strength to hit from that distance, like I said before, on that kick he didn't get the distance he needed and that's all she wrote but it's not like it's impossible to kick the ball that far in a dome.

If they'd gambled on 3rd and 4 and not made it we'd all be sitting here going "Y U NO KICK?!?! MEDLOCK HAS TEH LEG!!11!!!"

I sure wouldn't be.  I know that there are always some people that act like that, but I am not one of them.

If they wouldn't have made those 4 yards I would have thought nothing about O'Shea and I would have focused on Richie Hall and the defence that crapped the bed.

O'Shea made a bad decision.  The kick wasn't even close. Again, I don't think I have ever seen a coach attempt a 61 yard field goal when there was still plenty of time on the clock. A good coach has to play the odds better than that.

    Just my opinion. :)

Before games all coaches ask their kickers what ranges they are comfortable with.  OShea would have asked Medlock if he thought he could make that kick.  Medlock would have said yes.  The 58 yarder he kicked earlier in the year had 8 yards to spare.  61 isn't some ludicrous distance.  Not with Medlock.

With over a half minute left, I'm still calling a passing play.

But believing Medlock can make that kick?  Nothing crazy about that.  He's been our most consistent player this year, best kicker in the league this year.

He made that kick out doors mbrg with a wind at his back. There's a big difference between the two situations. And history agrees with me.

If there's 36 seconds left in the game and your that far out, you try and get the 4 yards.  That's a no brainer, or it should be.

61 yards is too far of a kick to ask of even the best kicker, (which I believe Medlock is.), in a dome.

That's because the only time you actually try a field goal from that far is when you have to score the field goal to win with no time left so the situation doesn't come up too often. Some kickers don't have the leg to do it either but we know that Medlock has the leg to put it 60 yards, he didn't on that particular kick but he has kicked it that distance plenty of times before so it's not like it's a can't be done thing, it just didn't happen this time. The way the offense was sputtering to end the game third down was no guarantee either and then we still have to most likely kick a long field goal anyway.

O'Shea gave the best kicker in the league a chance to win, it didn't happen and we move onto next year.

I'm sorry but I could not disagree with you more on this one.

The reason you never see a 61 yarder attempted is because no coach worth their salt would try it. (Unless you have a Janikowski type kicker, which Medlock is not, in terms of leg strength.) The only time you might see it is when they are in desperation mode because there is no time left on the clock. In any other situation it is ludicrous to try a 61 yard field goal. I have never seen it attempted with ample time still left on the clock in my many years watching football.

I don't care how good Justin Medlock is, he has never made a kick in a dome from that distance in a game, which is night and day different than doing it practice, because no one in the history of the CFL has done it.

We are talking about odds here.  We are talking about the odds of a kicker making a kick that has never been made in the history of the CFL to putting your offence back on the field to try and get 4 yards. Of course it's not a sure thing that they make the 4 yards, but the odds are better. A lot better.

It was a meat head decision by O'Shea.

  5. When the Stamps play in the Western Final on Nov. 20, they will have had 20 days off and Bo Levi Mitchell will have not played in a game in 30 days. (Basically a month!)

If any anyone is going to catch the Stamps on a bad day, the Western Final would be the most likely day.

I think the Bombers would have their best chance if they played the Stamps after such a long layoff instead of in the biggest game of the year in the Grey Cup.

  6. Loffler had a nice little "wow" play when he broke up a deep pass down the middle.  The WR was complaining that it was PI, but receivers are always whining about that. ;)

I don't think Willy had his best day.  He was a little off today, but come on, it's day one of camp.  The QB's in general seemed just slightly off today. The best laugh of the day was when some lady heckled Willy when he threw a pass behind the receiver.  "NICE UNDER THROW WILLY!"  Some people have no clue...

I watched Corney for a bit.  It seems like he has some good jump to his step. I can't wait to see him when things get real on that line.

#80 Thomas Mayo is not going to make this team if he keeps running routes the way he does. Yikes. To be honest, I don't think Mayo's going to make the team.

Justin Veltung looked sharp.  Brothers 7 & 12 looked sharp.  They are brothers  right, like the Sedin twins? :P

Posey had a nice pick.  The DB's in general were on the ball today.

No complaints Dascow. Considering what the team has worn in the past. Lowest point ever had to be the blue camos...

I agree iso.  For me I think it was the culmination of not getting our royal blues and getting those monstrosities instead.  lol

What's interesting for me though, is now that we have the royal blue unis back, I am ok with anything for the 3rd jersey.  I don't mind now if they try some new and crazy design schemes, because I'll always have the royals to go back to.  So...go nuts Winnipeg Football Club. :D

  8. Let's not get greedy iso.  We've been clamoring for royal blue and gold for 2 decades and now Wade Miller and the Winnipeg Football Club have finally delivered.  Let's take some time to just be happy we got our royals back, or at least be content. :)

To be honest, the away jerseys are starting to grow on me. I think they are going to look very good on the TV screen.

I'm also very glad they didn't go with blue pants.

Sometimes I am quick to complain, so in this case I think I should give credit where credit is due. In my opinion Wade Miller gets an A+ for his efforts.

  9. You liked the yellow tiger on a yellow helmet?

I personally think that the uniforms they had last year, when they went with black jersey and yellow pants, (I generally don't like all black uniforms.), was very sharp and one of the nicest I've seen from the TiCats in a while.

Both the Argos and the TiCats went to a more simple, classic look the last time they did a change over and to be honest I was kind of jealous because that's what I wanted the Bombers to do.

Hopefully now the rest of the league can be jealous of the Bombers for doing the same. :)

I read someone's comment before about Obi Wan, mentioning how he had anakins lightsaber for so long then handed it to Luke, just like Rey hands it to luke, and Obi wan was all about hiding children with the force at the time the empire was hitting stride and the jedi was all but extinct. Hopefully Rogue one sheds some light on this, because rey would have likely been a new born roughly around a new hope/empire strikes back, maybe when Obi wan even gave up his name and went with Old Ben Kenobi, he also dropped his jedi teachings and hooked up with someone random on tattooine

it would also account for her british accent and by JJ abrams saying it was someone not seen in TFA, Obi Wans my new pick

The math doesn't work for Obi Wan.  He died in A New Hope.  The Force Awakens is around 30 years after A New Hope.  Rey was 20 years old in The Force Awakens.

Keep in mind, JJ Abrams has a long history of deceiving his fans. He said it that way to throw off the fans.

  11. I said that I'd believe it when I saw it, in terms of the team going back to royal blue, and now I have seen it.  I believe it and I love it!  If they don't design some of the minor aspects of the jersey the same way that I would, that's cool with me.  I'm just happy we got our royals back.

Looks like I'm going to have to empty my can of loonies and other change, because I may have to buy one or two new jerseys for this season. :)

  12. Hello folks,

I was wondering if you fine folks could help me out. I will be joining a hockey pool for the play-offs and I need somewhere that shows me an up to date depth chart for each team.  Last year I used, dailyfaceoff.com and although some teams were accurate, others were not. It kind of messed up my draft.

So do any of you know a good place to find up to date depth charts?

    Thanks,

    Dascow.
