Two stories about Ty that I recall. First was an interview Bob Irving did with then Argonaut o-lineman Chris Schultz. Chris said preparing to play the Bombers in the mid-1980’s was basically getting ready to put up with “3 hours of noise” from Jones and James West because they would never stop talking on the field all game. Schultz said they ran their mouths on every play non-stop, and the only difference was that where Jones just complained on every play - “he’s holding me again ref, did you see him holding me?” West was a bit funnier and could actually throw out the occasional bit of praise - “OK, you got me good with that block that time,I’ll give you that one….still holding me most times, though, ha, ha”. Irving asked how it was with the non-stop chatter and Schultz said it got to some players, but he just laughed because it was so entertaining with what they came up with and they would never shut up.
Second story was the morning of the 1984 Grey Cup. Jones had won the Schenley award that week as the best defensive player in the CFL and had been seen around town but was keeping a lower profile than some of his boisterous teammates, which reporters found odd because of his loud nature and energy on the field. After the morning breakfast on game day, a bunch of players were heading back to their rooms and by-passed a notoriously slow hotel elevator to take the staircase up a few floors - all except Jones who waited for the elevator to come. A reporter saw this and asked Ty if hd was going to walk up the stairs as well rather than wait for what always seemed like an eternity for the elevator. Jones simply said “no, I’m saving all my energy for the game today, not wasting any on climbing stairs”. A record 4 sacks and a forced fumble later and he was Grey Cup defensive MVP.

A trio of running backs for today.

William Miller. 1980 rookie of the year. Another who left us too soon. R.I.P.
Mike Sellers, the thunder to Charlie Roberts’ lightning.

Andrew Harris, the hometown hero who fulfilled his promise to end the drought.

Multiple All Star Center Bob Swift.  He was the Center for Don Jonas, Chuck Ealey & Dieter Brock from 1971-77. Came into the league in 1964 with the Lions as a fullback rushing for over a thousand yards & named ROTY.
Swift blew his knee out in the 1964 Grey Cup early in the first quarter & missed the rest of the game. He was able to come back  as a player when his injury healed but his running days were over. The Lions converted him to Guard in 1965. Acquired by the Argos in 1966 where he also played Center. Traded to the Bombers in a positional swap. We traded our starting Center Paul Desjardins to the Argos for their Center Bob Swift prior to the 1971 season.
He was a four time CFL Western Conference All Star in 1971, 72, 73 & 74. as well as an All Canadian in 1971, 72 & 74.

crazy to think that if not for one special teams tackle... we might not have O'Shea, Walters and looking at a 30+ year drought...
It can't be overstated how huge that tackle was

I was looking for that one. This was a tough day to pick. Had KD Williams, Tom Canada, and three Hall of Famers in Bob Swift, Roger Savoie, and Lou Mogul as other options to choose from, but a Cup hoisting gif is never a bad choice.
Here are photos of the tackle:

And here is the video. The specific play is at 5:40 but the whole thing is worth watching again!

Back in 2020, when we had pic 18... Lawson was someone I was hoping that we could have drafted... This is a good move.... Walters & company score big again, in my books...

The fact that Eli hasn't been signed by any team should probably indicate he's not going to be. I'll be blown away if he's playing in the CFL this year.

Hey fellas, found this book on amazon, just came out in January. Its called Border Boys and its basically a historical look at football in general but mostly focusses on the American players that lived close to Canada that came up north in the 30's and helped change our game. Specifically about the first time the Grey Cup was won by a western team(Winnipeg in 1935). Its written by a North Dakotan (Ryan Christiansen). I just got into it but it really seems like he's done his research. Thought you all might find it interesting.
Thats Fritz Hanson on the cover who essentially became the first true Winnipeg Blue Bomber star back in the 30's. He pretty much single handedly won us the 1935 Grey Cup from what ive read(334 punt return yards in the game which is still a Grey Cup record). My late grandmother would often speak of his exploits 🙂

Subpar Offensive Lines are a problem on many teams
BUT, the most important positions (OT) are being filled with 95% Americans
So, to say the OL issues are created by the Canadian ratio, is over-simplifying a complex problem
Winnipeg has built an outstanding OL by signing and retaining of THE BEST American Tackles available - while scouting and drafting good Canadians
They have a good OL because of the ratio, not in spite of it
And, good players are well paid, regardless of nationality.

The salary cap and Import/Non-import ratio is what separates the smart GMs from the dullards.  I do NOT want it screwed with.

He called it immaturity in his younger days that got him tossed from The League and by the time he'd got his head on straight he was too old for what they were looking for. Simply put, we are EXTREMELY fortunate to have a player that is "too good" for this league... (similar to Mike Sellers in more ways than one I believe)

Casey got his degree in medicine from the University of Manitoba. He attended classes & studied while playing for the Bombers. He interned in Winnipeg & London, England before settling in Connecticut where he practiced medicine the rest of his career.
