hey Winnipeg folks -- maybe I missed it in here, but what's the word on Little Brown Jug brewery in the Exchange? One of the names I've heard that I know I've never tried and might get over to in a couple weeks...

It's on William, between to Princess and Hargrave. They one do one beer right now, but I enjoy it. Talked to a couple of guys involved at meet the brewers event. They're not bottling or canning yet, concentrating on growlers and taps throughout the city. It's a nice tap room, too.

I thought it was taking place Jun. 9-10...?

In any case, it's a very good event. I went last year and the amount of beers available was mind-boggling. It was a great time.

Thanks for the catch. Getting ahead of myself

Actually the BEST thing to do @Mark H., if you ever get the chance, is go to Flatlanders Beer Fest. You can go sample (2oz) beers of all kinds of styles. That's what really helps you learn what you like and don't like...

    Flatlanders is actually next weekend.

It had become a little corporate driven over the last few years, but hopefully all the new micros in MB and Canada, along with what people now want, will help to change that. The MLCC was slow to recognize local and micros for the longest time, and that got reflected in what was offered. Got introduced to Innis and Gunn there though, which is my top of the list beer.

So - for someone just getting into to this - what would you guys recommend? As far as mainstream beers go I like Heineken, Guinness, Carling

I'd start with sample packs, There's a "social pack" out right now that's bottles from MB breweries, including a pink lemonade beer (ugh) from Farmery. There's also that sample pack that I mentioned earlier in the thread.

Another good thing to do is go to the breweries and tap rooms. You can get a flight of 4 sample sized beers, to see what you like. You can also chat with the brewers, as there is a wealth of information on the types of beers out there.

ha! No kidding...we'll have to head back and see if it's shitty now. Full disclosure: I am a taproom fanboi, and can be swayed on a beer by a really cool taproom. I *LOVE* the vibe of a good taproom. The gf and I have a plan for our next house, to have a basement that basically looks like a really cool taproom. So there is definitely a possibility that I've been my opinion on a beer gets skewed positive if I loved the taproom. That's on me, and something that would likely change if I was drinking a beer in a neutral site, for sure.

I know what you mean about a good tap room making beer seem to taste better. A group of friends head to a beer convention in Minneapolis each year. Convention is on Saturday, but we leave on Tuesday, and hit as many tap rooms and breweries on the way as we can.  Our record is 20 in one trip, one DD each day thank goodness!

Sisyphus in MLPS and Titletown in Green Bay are among my top places.

  6. If any beer fans are interested. Last year's event was a great way to chat with some of the brewers and sample a wide variety of their products. Should be well represented by some of the new breweries soon to open, as well as newly opened.

Have to agree with a lot that's been said already.  LoW is all over the place with their quality, PEG doesn't seem to be concentrating on beer, I can't get into Barnhammer, and Torque is my personal favorite drinking beer taproom (Matt knows what he is doing). As the old group on the block, I love half Pints as well.

  7. The LC has a good variety pack available right now, for those that like to try something different. Should be available elsewhere too.

I was waiting for someone to say this.  Of course, calories in, calories out.  The most basic of science.  But as you said, there are more efficient ways to accomplish this.

I clicked through a few studies about low carb because thats what Im most interested in right now.  And, for example, one study had the purpose of examining low carb as a fad diet that could cause harm and had no benefit.  That was the expected outcome.  They had two groups, one on low carb with no calorie counting.  And the other on the "accepted" nutritional plan (food pyramid) counting calories (so a traditional reduced caloric diet).  Their results shows significant weight gain for the low carb group over the low calorie group and their vital stats were all basically the same.

I know nothing but what I read and I've read a lot over the years (including Dr Oz books).  So this low carb is new.  It was always counter intuitive to me.  We shall see what happens.

Maybe it's not necessarily low carb, but realizing how many carbs we were eating to get to where we were, ie the actual portion size for pasta.

I'm never gonna be able to kick carbs, so low carb isnt realistic, but i know for me, I was consuming way too many carbs, throwing off that pyramid.

I'm with tacklewasher on this one. For some of us, it just needs to be simple, and tuning out the noise that is all the fads, newest theories, etc. It's realistic and attainable. A little bit of help and guidance from something like myfitnesspal goes a long way.

Yes, true.  But there are ways to do that more efficiently.

A couple of sites Im addicted to right now are dietdoctor.com and eatthebutter.com  Both go into detail about the low carb plan where good fat is good.  Many others too, but it becomes a whirlwind so I've been going back to those two (especially the first one).

The reality is, if you're hungry all the time you will "cheat".  Like others say, its a lifestyle choice which can be hard if you have 30 or 40 years of one lifestyle.  dietdoctor states if you're hungry you're doing their plan wrong.

That's the one thing that has surprised me through my journey- I'm eating a lot less, but not hungry. Really trying to avoid the cheating and binge eating.

I know for me, the plan has to be not too complicated. Maybe once I get closer to my target weight, I'll start to look at fine tuning the plan, once I have a better understanding of my body's needs.

I view it as "rewinding the clock" on previous bad habits. I've always been on the heavier side, so one thing I'll do to is remind myself " I haven't been this weight in ... years" Right now that number is 8 years.

  10. Thanks for starting this thread. It's always good to hear I'm not alone, and tips are great.

Since ballooning up to 278 after a ruptured Achilles tendon and switch to a sedentary job, I've recently lost 37 pounds so far.

The main tool I'm using my fitness pal. It's an app that track eating and exercise to calculate weight loss, as well as creating a balance in diet. My doctor also gave me some advice that has worked well for me. He said the best way to lose weight is by monitoring intake, but do what you can to be active. When I'd try to lose weight in the past, I'd go hard at the gym, but not address my intake. I'd then get discouraged and slip back.

Now I do lots of little things that are making a difference- not eating out as much (portion sizes and can't control calories), walking every day, cutting out prepackaged foods, less carbs, more fish and chicken. I also don't deny myself. If I want a cinnamon bun, I'll have one but budget for it, and it's a rare treat as opposed to an every day thing.

  11. Love the show, and read all the comics, but the show runners are starting to turn me off the show. Liked the tone but the following drove me nuts;

Waiting 20 minutes to see who met Lucille, considering where the season finale left us.

3 "fake outs" with chopping off the hand like the governor did to Rick (2 with Rick and one with Carl)

Not a fan of the casting for Negan-  he is  more physically imposing and much funnier in the comics, and I hope they develop the character

I hope the show runners stick to writing good stories, and stop with playing the audience with cheap diversionary tricks

  12. So here's my thoughts- take them for what they're worth.

A co-worker (season ticket holder) who I would trust to tell the truth had a related issue with another bomber fan and brought it forward to the team. He received an apology for the late call due to the fact they were dealing with "another issue".

After the discussion, it was made clear to him that the women's story had credibility, whether it was from security cameras, people coming forward after the fact, or both. This woman wanted nothing from the team at first.

I have no doubt something regrettable and unacceptable happened, and you can debate how much was embellished, the woman's motivation, choices made etc. It would not surprise me to hear if no one around did nothing. How often do people see traffic accidents and don't stop? It's a human trait to think it's not me, it's someone else's problem, even though they think they would do something.

WCB is not funded by the government, rather they are funded by the premiums that the employers pay, and legislated by the government.

Therefore the taxpayers would not be on the hook for busted noggins.

I would assume, given the nature of the employment, that the CFL would probably have to pay some pretty high premiums.

    This.

WCB is based on a rate setting model. It'll be interesting to see what jobs WCB would use as a comparator group to determine what the employer pays. WCB will not often tell an employer what they should be doing, but create an incentive through reduced rates through reduced claims.

I think it's a really good idea, but I'm not sure how it'll play out for that kind of profession. I can see those premiums being high enough it would not be feasible, especially if the injury prevents someone from working in any area for a long period.

Look for a few different MB micro brews coming this year sometime:

    -Peg Beer Co.

    -One Great City Brewing Co.

    -Torque Brewing Co.

    -Barn Hammer Brewing Co.

Peg Beer Co. will be a brew pub, opening very soon. You may have already heard of it.

    Excited for all of this.

On top of that, Big Rock Brewing is planning on setting up a brew pub in the Masonic Temple at Ellice and Donald. There's a newly formed Manitoba Craft Brewer's Association being set up, with about 20 different brewer's represented, all in differing degrees of development. Those listed above are almost ready to roll, while most others will never see the light of day.

Peg Beer Co. is being run by a former part owner of Half Pints, and Torque is being lead by the former brewer at Fort Garry. Farmery is finally gearing up to brew in MB, instead of at Muskoka.

    Good times finally for Manitoba!

If there's anybody interested in beer, or beer collectibles, I'm VP of the Great White North Breweranists. PM me if you want more info. (I'm a long time lurker!)

Each month we have tastings from different breweries we have visited. I was in Victoria, so I visited 10 breweries on the Island, and brought back samples from each one for the group to try. We also have an annual trip to the Mid-West (ND, SD, MN, WI, Iowa) and 10 of us hit 17 breweries in 4 days this year, bringing back samples for the group to try. We have meetings at the breweries in the city (Half Pints and Fort Garry) and have discussed the new breweries opening with those involved.

We started as a group interested in decorating our man caves with beer collectibles, but with the explosion of new breweries, beers, labels, tap handles, signs, etc, we've had trouble keeping up! We're always looking for like minded individuals, who didn't know a group like this was out there.

The gf and I have been doing that kind of collecting and decorating our house with a lot of it. She loves collecting growlers from different places and other signage. 17to85 says we're immature and the house looks like a frat but we enjoy it! :) *waves at dave*

Any interesting ones? I'd like to make a point of picking up unique ones on my travels. I've got one from Rebellion in Regina that's made of stainless steel, looks like a mini keg, and another from Ohio that looks like a big hand grenade.

  17. Assuming you're in the St James area, the Silver Heights Restaurant has a shuttle.

I was talking to a manager of another place that had a shuttle last year. They said they weren't doing it this year, because of the hassle they were getting with inspections of the buses for meeting safety specifications, using older buses as a shuttle service.

  18.

Based strictly on the ratio of TVs to tables, go to the Shark Club...

Is the Shark Club in Winnipeg as ****** baggy as in Calgary?

Baggy?  What the hell does "baggy" mean?

    1.  Too many old bags in this joint.

    2.  Girls are so young, this place smells like sh*tty diapers.

    3.  The Legion was full of old baggy men in old baggy clothing..

    4.  Doesn't anybody own a belt anymore?

    5.  Going back in so I can bag me some more.

    Please help.

Missing word rhymes with "bouche" FYI

  19. I take the silver heights restaurant shuttle, lotsa fun. BP @ moray has one, average joes @ the viscount gort. I also heard the hotel (travelodge now?) across from the co-op before the perimeter has one , but not sure. There is also the shuttle from assiniboia downs, that i think is $5 this year.
