2024/2025 Blue Bombers Off-Season Thread

Lapo is nowhere near monetizing YouTube. I'm kind of wondering how long he will do it for. He does a ton of speaking, consulting and coaching clinics. That is pretty lucrative. -

It's been like 40 years since that was a real thing though too. Name a Bomber player you can remember in your lifetime who joined the team right out of a NFL camp in September....a guy who we didn't have before...and was an impact player right away. There's two I can remember in my life...Stegall and Orlando Bobo, although he hadn't played football in 2 seasons when they brought him up midseason. NFL rosters are also 85-90 deep with IR these days. That first layer of 250-300 cuts aren't signing a 3 year deal to come up to Canada, yeah they have an out if they get signed by NFL in the next February. -

Sure, but you're not going to fix that in September. You got a guy ready to play who is already well acquainted with your QB and offense on the street. -

Maybe, maybe not. Wheatfall was basically a void out there. Whitehead was busted up and can barely move. You have another reliable target that Collaros trusts. Maybe get 3-4-5-6 first down catches out of that guy. In our back to back with Sask Wolitarsky had 6 catches for first downs in those close games. Who took his place? -

Talking in general over the course of the season not the Grey Cup game specifically. Collaros and several of the rookie receivers could not get on the same page or took half a season to. It's not an easy plug and play spot. Schoen is the exception not the rule. I think if we had 1-2 more guys around he trusted we wouldn't have seen the offense stalling out as much. Like Bailey might be a couple years past his prime but a guy like Wheatfall out there was worse than useless. Midseason we know Schoen isn't coming back and even that Wolitarsky is probably not going to be available much if it all the rest of the way....crazy they didn't pull the trigger on Bailey. -

Goveia is a major loss, and a guy who would be a quality GM. Think McManus moving on would be good for us in terms of getting some new eyes in on the personnel side, especially in the US, but don't think he has a hope in hell of landing a GM job. He's like the Van Wilder of the CFL. -

Toronto has 8 guys within the box and 5 yards of the LOS on that play. Bombers have 6 blocking. It's in the Lapo breakdown about 20 mins in. That's a pull 100% of the time in RPO. Shitty route by Lawler and shitty throw by Wilson otherwise it's a pitch and catch TD at the back pylon. Really Demski was the only somewhat healthy vet outside of Lawler in the majority of games. Clercius started more than half the games. Crazy they didn't make a move on Bailey. We got eaten up by zone D because our receivers didn't know what to do and Collaros didn't trust them. Like you said, Wilson improved a lot. Wheatfall was useless all the way through. -

Interesting how easy all the RPO stuff worked both pass and run. Why would you run straight drop backs 9 out of 10 plays? -

Those guys are both free agents. If they trade for VAJ those guys aren't coming back. -

They have the guy from Laval stashed. Probably let him do it for the next 3 years on his rookie deal. -

Think we have to realize that a 15-20 years ago 32 yards net was the goal of any punt team as an average. Now the entire league is basically at 37 yards net. The kicking game has evolved a lot. And it's not just about hammering the ball. This mythical "kick out of trouble" stuff is bunk in this code and not even really possible anymore with the out of bounds rules. Teams used to concede the safety basically any time they were scrimmaging inside their own 15. Now they kick more hoping to give up 3 and not 5-9 (safety and another score). Yeah lose points with more opportunity potentially, but for Paredes quite likely he maintains the make % on 20 more kicks and his average distance is basically the same as Castillo. Castillo definitely cashed in on those 60 yarders in the xP calculation. It's a nice luxury to have a guy who can make those kicks. But if I had to pick a guy to make a 45 yarder to win the game it wouldn't be Castillo. -

What's the hope if you go grim on what your intent is? Have teams make offers on Rourke too? Anyone with their starter heading to free agency can handle that contract just fine. So right away...Edmonton, Calgary, Sask, Hamilton, Montreal. -

Or don't ignore the % and realize Paredes put up that number in 20 fewer field goal attempts! Paredes is the only other guy close to Castillo in average distance. He'd run away with this # if you balance it per attempt. Whyte had 11 fewer attempts so if you extrapolate that to Castillo's FGA's, Castillo would be roughly tied for 3rd in the league with Hajrullahu, maybe a notch above due to distance of attempts. -

Name a punter in the league who did that. And while we're in fantasy land...I'll take a QB who only throws TD passes and a RB who never fumbles! -

If our special teams were as bad as some say they were it's a wonder we didn't give up 55 points a game. But with some of the math skills going around maybe they thought we did give up that many points. -

You don't understand at all. I'm not talking about return average, we're talking about the punt teams. Every team in the league on average gained between 37-40 net yards of field position on a punt. Whether that punt went 80 yards or 38 yards before it was touched by the other team/bounced out of bounds isn't really relevant. Net is punt distance - return. They don't include penalties in the CFL league stats for special teams. You know what net income is? Same concept. -

The end result is the same if you kick it 60 yards and have it returned 25 yards or kick it 42 and have it returned 7. Nobody "punts out of trouble" and basically never have in Canadian Football. That's a US thing with the narrow field to just ******* hammer one 70 yards. Julien beat everyone in the league by about 10 yards per punt and his net average is just the same as everyone else. -

Well we for sure lost two games because he couldn't make pretty routine kicks. So I guess that makes up for the exceptional things he did. Yeah can blame the O for not finishing drives, but kicker needs to do his part. Also...not good at kickoffs. I wouldn't have been rushing to re-sign him, but there's not a ton of Canadian kickers around right now either. Based on this description...you don't know wtf net is. -

Interesting thing in the league this year is basically every team was within a couple yards net on punts, most between 37-38 including Sheehan/Bombers. So really you'd have the same feeling with any punter in the league at the moment. -
I think we're giving the personnel side a little too much credit of late. Who have we brought in the past couple years that was a big miss? All the guys we cut fade into the mist. The talent level of the past couple camps has been pretty poor. Can we not bring anyone in who is a threat to the QB off the snap? Even watching the guys this year in the most unstructured format of preseason there's no one in camp who can fire off and cause problems. The only guys we found are 300 pounds. Where's the guy who is a threat when he has the ball? We do really good at the draft and we've been doing pretty good at identifying guys off other teams of late. The US side is severely lacking basically since 2021. Our depth has been garbage.

Again though, planning….which OL did you want to spend on? It’s nice to say that but you need the player available to sign. Hardrick is beyond cooked. Gray retired. There was no impactful free agent the past couple years. Look at Sask…they’ve signed them all. I’d say this season really proved that Collaros needs a certain type of receiver to fit the offense he runs. And for some reason nearly all the guys we brought in this year were not that body type. We needed a returner too but we had like 20 rookie receivers and like 3 of them were 6’2 or more. I’d go all in on receivers if you want to win. If you can’t pass for first downs in this league you can’t win a game. OL is important too but there’s a lot less of them around. Bombers likely need to replace 3 this year. -

It’s been downhill since 2021. 2022 we get Schoen but lose Lawler and Adams. No real threat on outside. 2023 get Lawler back but him and Schoen trade being out, Schoen is out for playoffs. This year we lose Bailey and don’t really replace him. Lawler and Schoen both dress for game 1 and that’s it. No threat from the slot, real low on guys the QB trusts. Wolitarsky out most of the year. The more we’ve relied (or had to rely) on Demski to be our best guy out of the slot the more our O has struggled and we’ve lost. -

Which year did we win with average receivers? Maybe 2019 when we had about 4 2-3 receivers and Harris near his peak. 2021- Lawler, Bailey, Demski, Wolitarsky, Adams Our depth at receiver has got worse every year since. Especially due to injury. Our OL has also been worse every season through age, attrition and lack of positive development on guys like Dobson. I think looking at it in terms of money is a little bit silly. Who could they have paid? Hardrick? Would we be a better team with him on the sideline making $260,000 waving a towel to hype everyone up? -

How about say nothing? He'll be playing somewhere. Issue with him is he's a great player when he plays 2/3 of snaps and a pretty mediocre one as an every down player. Sure the capability is there for spectacular plays like that, but down after down he's just getting ground into a pulp.
