yeah, I think that VA still has a bunch to prove ... he's never been clutch when the chips are down ... but no complaints about his play during the regular season.

Rourke put up a lot of numbers against shitty teams in his golden run.  Maybe the dude isn't just a flash in the pan, but he has to prove that yet.

Harris will get hurt and that's the end of the Roughriders.

The Elks will go as far as Fajardo will take them.  That might be a surprising distance.  His teams win games they shouldn't.

    Winnipeg 11-7

    Edmonton 9-9

    Calgary 9-9

    BC 9-9

    Riders 7-11

    Toronto 12-6

    Montreal 10-8

    Ottawa 8-10

    Hamilton 6-12

Kudos for doing what many predictors fail to do: have the correct total of games league-wide, i.e. wins and losses both add up to 81. Well done!

The explanation for Dru Brown's struggles in Ottawa was likely more than just inexperience. The whole team was thin on talent and depth. even in coaching.

Yes, they were far behind for most of the game (and ultimately lost by 20), but Brown torched the Argo defence for more than 400 yards in the Eastern Semifinal. He looked very legit to me.

No, never said that. I just looked at the stadiums in Mexico & the US. You have to wonder why we're even involved. Edmonton has a much better venue than TO & CWS hosted World Cup qualifiers before yet politics played a hand in giving Toronto a series of World Cup games. Just because...

Have you ever been to BMO? I love Edmonton, used to live there and always enjoyed watching CFL games at Commonwealth. But the only thing "better" about it compared to BMO is the seating capacity (and that's only better if you want to sell as many tickets as possible). BMO is an intimate facility with fantastic sightlines, and a short walk to a thriving nightclub/restaurant district.

Correct - PR salaries come out of the cap just like active roster salaries.  Given the info here (https://cfldb.ca/faq/compensation/), the average is $108,250‬ per player based on 56 players.

I'm guessing the "roster size" quoted there is 46 active + 10 PR, without including injured list. So the number is likely closer to 60+ on average over the course of a season.

Just doing the math on the salary cap of $6.06,000,000 on a 45 man roster that works out to an average of $134,667.00. Of course, except the Bombers who are taking the cautious approach & still waiting any day now for the PA to change its mind & divert that $400,000 salary cap increase into pension money.

Players on the one-game injury list and players who serve less than a full six games on the six-game list are also charged against the cap, and I assume practice roster expenses are also charged against the cap. So the average spent per player will be below that amount. I did a study of the Argo roster in 2023 -- they had an average of 5.2 guys on the one-game injury list each game, meaning that they were paying 51.2 guys a game cheque each week. Plus a few of the six-gamed guys got pulled off before six games were up, adding their game cheques to the total as well. If in fact the PR is also part of the cap, it's probably safe to assume that the cap gets divided among about 52-55 players.

If I had to guess? 3 things:

-salary pinch is real and we're still likely to see a lot of guys get thanked for their service...

-Jones was getting NFL looks not long ago but wasn't that guy as the year went on

    -Isaac Darkangelo

Jones barely played in 2024, first because of ratio issues and then because Darkangelo grabbed a spot and wouldn't let go of it. Argo brass must believe Darkangelo isn't getting an NFL invite, and it appears they might be going with two NATs at LB anyway. I doubt Jones had a high salary, so not much money to be saved. They've done him a favour by letting him get a jump on free agency.

Don't put that out there! Dog-gone-it. He seems to be a bit under the radar for what passes for CFL press/commentariat types.

I have Brink as very high priority because I see him as a one-off in our league. Nobody does what he does. Ceresna may be the best at what he does, but can we find another 3-tech? Yes. Can we find a purer Nose than Brink? I genuinely don't think such a player existed in the league last season.

He is indeed one of a kind, albeit a bit injury-prone. I imagine Argos know they can bring back only one of those two (Brinkman and Ceresna). Both are gonna get paid, just like Hendrix did last year.

They also need to start finding some better American OTs.  They seem to grow on trees for the Argos.

I wish that were so but the Argos have developed ONE good INT OT (Allen). Cage is OK but his body is wearing down. There is no team on either side of the border that can easily find good OTs. It's as hard, or harder, than finding good QBs IMO.

  9. IMO there are a couple of factors here. Hunter can definitely play OT so Toronto might need only one INT starter on the line. Allen is an excellent player, but $210k is a lot when you might be able to find a younger INT at a third the price. (The risk is you don't find one, of course, and good OTs don't grow on trees.)

This deal frees up money that could be spent elsewhere (like McManis). Toronto might also be expecting to lose a NAT starter or two (Metchie/Smith) so having a starting-calibre NAT LB might be a good hedge against that.

Toronto's last off-season trade (Gittens for Ceresna) came as a shock to fans but worked out well for both teams. This one might, too.

I, too, would love to know who's pulling the strings in Toronto's front office. My guess is that Dinwiddie has become the de facto GM.

  10. Pretty surprising to see how the East fared against the West in 2024: Tor 7-3-0, Mtl 6-3-1, Ott 6-3-1, Ham 3-7-0. Overall East was 22-16-2 against West. Head to head, Tor was 2-0 vs. Wpg, 2-0 vs. B.C., 1-1 vs the other three (including meaningless loss to Edm in wk 21).

Toronto had trouble with the non-playoff teams (0-3 vs Ham, 1-1 vs both Cal and Edm) but was 8-3 against playoff teams.

Toronto who didn't play 10 or 11 Canadians won the Grey Cup by fielding the best team they possibly could by playing 7 Canadians. We didn't.  Trying so hard... not.... to.... mention... Jake... Thomas.

For the record, in the Grey Cup Toronto started nine NATs (4 o-line, 2 receivers, DE-LB-S) and used one other (Mital) on a lot offensive snaps.

Priester is an interesting guy for sure. As I recall they were high on him and the Argos first grabbed him quick, but since then has been on and off rosters more than he’s played games.  For some reason hasn’t really solidified a spot, but he has the make up to succeed. His experience and understanding should be real good by this point.

Plus the Argos have been up there with us for ability to find and develop dbs. Going back even further than us. So says a lot that they like him soo much.

The Argos cut both Priester and McFadden this season before bringing both back. Mgmt made some questionable choices early on in the secondary, but eventually corrected them. Both guys played in the 2022 Grey Cup; IIRC Priester missed all of 2023 with an injury but McFadden was a regular that season.

Ehhhh I would say its not exactly a secret what needs to happen.

Adams CANNOT be on that roster at the start of the season. The Salary Cap won't allow it. The teams that are in on him know there is a possibility they can get him, its just a matter of do you deal with the Lions and provide enough trade capital (read: anything) to get him, or wait until he is cut and then attempt to outbid the other teams.

To me the big question is, is he due a roster bonus or signing bonus payable before the season starts? If so, the Lions will be eager to take the highest offer they can get before the payment deadline. If not, they can hang on to him until Day 1 of the season. Any team that wants Adams is going to want him in the building and working with the OC long before camp opens. So the "wait for him to be cut" strategy works only if he's due an off-season bonus. And it has the added disadvantage (for the teams seeking him) of creating the possibility of a bidding war. Whereas getting him by trade gives the acquiring team certainty about its 2025 starter.

With a 9 team league, someone has to have a bye week every week.  Agreed though that having 3 teams off at the same time should be eliminated come October.

Since they won't go up against Thursday or Sunday night NFL, there are only two ways to have just one bye each week in the fall: double-header Friday/double-header Saturday, or single game Friday/triple-header Saturday. With CTV needing a 3p ET start time for its Saturday game, they would have to start a game at noon ET or have games at 7 and 10 ET on Saturday to accommodate a triple-header. I don't think either of those options would be appealing to the TV rights-holder. 10p ET starts drive away a sizeable chunk of the TV audience, and noon ET (9a PT) seems like a non-starter as well.

If it was all about yards TD's and INT's then I guess Bo Levi Mitchell is the best QB this season despite his mediocre record?

Yes, he is the best QB this season despite his team's mediocre record. Which QB in your estimation has played better than Mitchell?

I just don’t understand the need for HC’s to announce this to the world. Most times they obviously know whose starting well in advance of the next game but any advantage small or large to help hamper the other team in preparing, take it.

Assuming reporters are watching practice, who's starting at QB would be apparent since starters get most, if not all, of the practice reps.

Fayad was the Mac Defensive player of the year in 2021 with 13 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. The guy has a motor. If he didn’t get injured at the start of training camp you would have known who he is. Very intriguing prospect.

He was with Toronto in 2022 and looked quite good in the handful of games he played. I thought he was a lock to make the Argos last year but I guess they had too much INT depth on the d-line. I think he's gonna be a good player in this league.

Jim Barker isn't there anymore though. He was a big reason for their scouting success. Barker got to pour over Murphy's database. I am glad those two are not in the front office together anymore. Murphy looks under every rock, and Barker has the knack for finding the best of the lot.

Barker was with Toronto for only one year (2022). A few of his signings were on the Grey Cup team and the 16-2 team, but not many that were solely or mostly attributable to him IMO. The real brains of the Toronto operation is Vince Magri. Their Canadian scouting has been out of this world -- their past four drafts have yielded a ton of roster players, including some starters.

Nice for the Accuser to have their legal team lob this grenade with no accountability, before the season begins so that the club will need it dealt with quickly. And it doesn't hurt that the club had to cut a hush-hush settlement cheque once before.

This is a wrongful termination suit with a side of a sensationalized accusation to whip the press (and apparently internet forums) into a frenzy before evidence and judgement. And why would the accused be named and subjected to trial by press except for the purpose of shaming them into accepting a settlement (much as was done once before against the Argos)?

Would you have preferred that the accuser not file the lawsuit at all? File it but not name names? Wait until after the upcoming season so as not to harm the Argos? Or that no news organization report on the lawsuit until its outcome is known?

Once a lawsuit is filed, all of its particulars -- including accusations and names -- are in the public domain. It is common practice for suits to be reported on by the media, and invariably the reports say something along the lines of "the allegations have not yet been tested in court" (as this one did) to make clear that their accuracy/veracity has not been established -- they are just allegations at this point. Reporting allegations contained in lawsuits happens all the time. Civil courts operate in the open.
