Highway 59

Was on it last night  and they asphalted it from floodway down past IdC(Ile des Chenes). Looked and felt like the cheapest job ever. Preferred the old road myself.

I think there is some greater plan for 59. 

 

I havent been out to Grand Beach this year yet but last time I was, they were doing some big project at the Grand Beach turn-off.  How's that looking?

 

Was on it last night  and they asphalted it from floodway down past IdC. Looked and felt like the cheapest job ever. Preferred the old road myself.

I think he is referring to south of the city.

never understood why we build roads out of something that isn't solid enough that it can't be brought up by hand with a pick axe. Asphalting the same roads, (lage and bishop paticularly) every year in different sections has to be more expensive in the long run then building it properly with concrete. 

What's IdC?

I've noticed some of the highways they've done recently suck. We were actually driving down number 10 going to the peace gardens and I noted to my wife that there was a long section of road that was super nice. I couldn't believe we were in Canada for a while there.

IdC = iles des chenes.

The only stretch we are rebuilding properly is the highway out to the Emerson border. Dig down, replace EVERYTHING and do it right.

North Dakota and Minnesota do it right, why can't we. I hope this method of roadway rebuilding carries thru but I imagine we only went all out because it's a direct and crucial trade route..

Everywhere else will get the grater down 2 inches, slap on some horrible ashphalt that's not even road worthy and then in a year, do it again! Even the ashphalt on the number one after the provincial boundary puts our concrete to shame lol

I was just home in Manitoba for almost 3 weeks and the roads were worse than I remember just two years ago.

It's time to start building the roads properly and spending more now than later with repeated band aids

They get away with it because the catch-all excuse of "our climate" which doesnt explain why other places with the same climate are much better.  But the excuse fends off any sort of wide protest

A lot more. I'm pretty sure that influence had a lot to do with states adopting a 21 year old drinking age too.

Its the Federal funding #1 with ND Bakken oil money as #1A.

Highway 75 has been slowly being redone over the past few years with concrete like it is on the south side of the border. I think its the most heavily used highway in the province. Highway 59 needs to be twinned to St. Malo.

Years ago I read that the highway won't be twinned to Grand Beach as the First Nations on the reserve want too much money. It was twinned to the reserve in the 70's & no further. You'd think by now that the Province & the First Nations would have worked something out.

 

Yeah that was always the reason.  I would have twinned it after as well...its only a small stretch that would be single lane then.  Or make the highway go around the reserve which would have been ideal when the reserve would blockade the highway.  With the casino and hotel there now and the increase in traffic, I would think the First Nations would be happy to come to the table in some way.  Im surprised there arent more accidents on that highway with the amount of people using it and passing each other etc.

Needs to be done on the south side first. I get everyone wants to get to the cottage quicker but with all the people moving south of the city to places like Niverville that section needs to be made safer.

Highway 15 needs it too.  Inside the city and out.  I can't believe they haven't doubled Dugald all the way down, so many people live in East Transcona now, Oakbank, Dugald, Anola, as well as people going to the Perimeter by going down that road.  Dugald Road is so uneven on top of it.

 

You know what I love the most.  When they block everything off and then you see no one working in the construction zones for weeks at a time.

This is a major problem all over.  You just know its some union-friendly contracts.

 

They've been working on South Pembina for months now.  This should be 24/7 construction zone until its done, like with the work they did on the Perimeter.

It's like the work they were doing on the overpass on 59 and #1.  It took them 2 years to do that.  How does that take 2 years to finish?  They had to put up a bypass and new lights and everything...I call BS on that kind of thing.

Hate to be the spoiler but I just drove though North Dakota,  Minnesota, Ilinois and Michigan and they all have bad roads too. Not as many because you can see the money put in by the Federal government going back 50 years. The amount of money that must have been spent is stunning. It is all about priorities.

part of the whole american economic stimulus program was road construction. Many many many roads. Government there puts in tons, it's staggering the amount actually, if the feds here actually contributed like 10 percent of what the american government puts in, our roads would be way nicer too. heck even 5 percent.
