Interesting tidbits from Lawless

Let's call this from the lips of agents, GMs, players and coaches to the ears of a reporter.

Some of the following information can be filed under In Case You Missed It or ICYMI for the cool kids in class. Consider it a grab bag of new information collected from a week on the phone and some stuff that's already been passed along on Twitter, radio or TV:

Who will be the next Bombers defensive co-ordinator?

Last week I wrote it was Richie Hall's job to take and that contract negotiations were ongoing. Also included in the piece were a few sentences suggesting Mike Benevides was still in conversations with Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea. Benevides has been offered the DC job in Saskatchewan with the Riders but for some reason has yet to accept. Sounds like what was previously a one-horse race now has a pair of ponies interested in running the Bombers defence. Either way, the Bombers get a good coach. Expect a decision very soon.

Will guard Steve Morley be back in Winnipeg?

With the signing of Dominic Picard the Bombers now have five Canadians: Morley, Picard, Chris Greaves, Matthias Goossen and Patrick Neufeld, fighting for three positions. GM Kyle Walters appears intent on changing the attitude along his offensive line and while Morley is serviceable and a very likeable teammate, he doesn't have the snarl the Bombers are trying to adopt. My guess is he'll be asked to retire or given his outright release.

Will tackle Glenn January be back with the Blue Bombers?

The perennial all-star's contract is up and I don't see the Bombers re-signing him. Look for Winnipeg to take a run at pending free agent import tackle Sir Vincent Rogers of the Toronto Argos and non-import Ben Heenan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Winnipeg also has two young import tackles -- Jace Daniels and Devin Tyler -- they are high on.

How much will Heenan cost?

The price for Canadian offensive linemen just keeps rising and reports say Riders guard Brendon LaBatte will earn in the neighbourhood of $240,000 this season. Heenan is expected to go to market unless the Riders knock his socks off with a huge offer. Expect the bidding to start well north of $200,000 and it wouldn't be a surprise if Heenan eventually signs for $250,000. He's Canadian and a tackle and that's a commodity.

How much money does it cost you when someone makes a grammar mistake on the internet?

PS.  restaurant not restaraunt

I know it costs me stress that there are too many dumb people out there.

:D

Although my grammar and spelling is atrocious, I do believe that people should attempt and care about their grammar and punctuation on an online forum.  What is the use of learning English if you don't use it correctly and for that matter when else would most people use it in their lives.  It isn't like we write letters anymore by hand to send through snail mail.  I understand my spelling and grammar is bad but the best practice I get is attempting to use it properly on online forums.

Back to the topic though; interesting tidbits from Lawless indeed!  I'm still waiting on an announcement about Hall I really hope this isn't one of those Stubler things like last year

Uhg.... I still really wish we landed Stubler. I like his defence.

The longer this takes the more you are left to wonder what is going on with this?

Apparently Richie has a contract in hand.  If we don't hear anything for the next day or two, then I'd start wondering.  If he doesn't want to come here, I wonder what plan B is now?

If I recall correctly, last year it took Etch 1-2 weeks from the time O'Shea said he delivered the contract to Etch until the time the official announcement occurred.  Walters said it was the agents who were slowing things down.  Next week we can start getting a little worried, but way to early now...

I think the reason it took longer to get Etch's contract done had more to do with it being so close to the start of FA.

Yes you probably know more about the Bombers internal negotiations than Kyle Walters.

I meant the agents were slowing it down because it was so close to the start of FA and the players' contracts would have likely been a priority over a coach's. The Bombers announced Etch's hiring on Feb 20. The start of FA was Feb 11.

Etch's contract took longer because it was written on a chalk board that would be erased after every meeting
