Blue Bomber Photos

October 14, 1974. The Blue Bombers faced the Hamilton Tiger Cats & quarterback Don Jonas(#7) for the first & only time at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton after Jonas was traded for former Hamilton qb Chuck Ealey on September 2nd.  The Bombers dug deep & came away with a hard fought 19-14 victory that day. The Bombers had played two days earlier in Ottawa & were defeated 27-10 by the Rough Riders.  The Bombers had played 3 games in 8 days starting October 6th & went 2-1 over that time.  Just a punishing schedule that was common in those days with the dreaded "Eastern Swing". What made it worse was the limited rosters back then of only 34 players.

Winnipeg Blue Bomber Defensive back Bud Grant (#78) & an unidentified teammate attempt to knock down a pass intended for Hamilton Tiger Cats Offensive End Jack Logan   (#73) during the 1953 Grey Cup played on November 28th at Varsity Stadium in Toronto. The Ti Cats defeated the Bombers 12-6 that day. Meanwhile, the pressing question on their minds were, "Is there too much passing & if so, is it still football?" Survey says, No & Yes.

As a Bomber fan, it sure sucked to see Don  Jonas in a Ti Cat uniform. Don was so dejected by that trade that he retired right after the 74 season. He just didn't want to play anymore.  He wanted to retire a Blue Bomber & he finally got his wish in 2017.  Then Blue Bomber GM Earl Lunsford could be a prick if he had issues with any of his players.  The way he did with Jonas at the end in Winnipeg.

A day in the life of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on September 8, 1971.  Talk about blanket coverage by the Freep.  We can only wish for coverage like that today. I happen to remember that foreign Vaseline like substance thing on the Bombers OL jerseys. It became quite the story over the next few days.

Halfback Mack Herron running behind Offensive Guard Larry Slagle during the 1972 CFL season in a game in Calgary. Herron at 5'5 could literally disappear from the view of defenders charging into the LOS. However, don't let his diminutive size fool you.  At 185 lbs he had legs that looked like tree trunks & was surprisingly powerful. With a low center of gravity he was difficult to bring down. In 1972, he was the leading rusher in the CFL with 1,527 yards & 11 touchdowns.  He was runner up to Hamilton's Garney Henley for the CFL Most Outstanding Player.
