  1. The interesting thing here is that the resistance to televising all the games was the fear/certainty that attendance would drop. Hasn't turned out that way at all.
  2. I wouldn't credit Bibi with too many smarts, either. He id facing corruption charges (accepting bribes) but has refused to step down until the charges are resolved. He is also in bed with very hard-line Zionists who believe that Israel should be solely for Jews, and further, that absorbing all Palestinian property into Israel with the aim of expelling them is what God wants. When religion and politics enmesh, things always go badly.
  3. With the Netanyahu Government's dismissal of the Defense Minister, who opposes judicial reform, the number of protesters is increasing in all Israeli cities. The Israeli Army has reportedly lost control and is on alert.
  4. Agreed that Liegghio has not yet reached his (potential) ceiling but the Bombers cannot wait another couple of years to see if that comes to pass. Yes, he's a Canuck, and that is nice but he deserves the same consideration as any other player- he needs to prove he belongs in the position and if competition shows that he cannot be the best, then, that is the way we go.
  5. Idaho is the latest state to turn to older methods of capital punishment amid a nationwide shortage of lethal-injection drugs. -AP Idaho lawmakers passed a bill on March 20, 2023, that would authorize the use of firing squads if the state is unable to obtain drugs required for its lethal injection program. The bill will head to the desk of Idaho Gov. Brad Little next. (Trent Nelson/The Salt Lake Tribune via AP, Pool, File)VIA ASSOCIATED PRESS BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Republican Gov. Brad Little signed a bill allowing execution by firing squad, making Idaho the latest state to turn to older methods of capital punishment amid a nationwide shortage of lethal-injection drugs. The Legislature passed the measure March 20 with a veto-proof majority. Under it, firing squads will be used only if the state cannot obtain the drugs needed for lethal injections. Pharmaceutical companies increasingly have barred executioners from using their drugs, saying they were meant to save lives. One Idaho death row inmate has already had his execution postponed repeatedly because of drug scarcity. The shortage has prompted other states in recent years to revive older methods of execution. Only Mississippi, Utah, Oklahoma and South Carolina have laws allowing firing squads if other execution methods are unavailable, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. South Carolina’s law is on hold pending the outcome of a legal challenge.
  6. Netanyahu Fires Defense Minister For Urging Halt To Court Overhaul JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired his defense minister on Sunday, a day after the former army general called for a halt to the planned overhaul of Israel’s judiciary that has fiercely divided the country. The move signals the prime minister will move ahead this week with plans for the overhaul, which has sparked widespread opposition. Tens of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets, military and business leaders have spoken out against it and leading allies of Israel have voiced concerns. Outgoing Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, a former army general, is a senior member of Netanyahu’s ruling Likud party. On Saturday, he called for a pause in the controversial legislation until after next month’s Independence Day holidays, citing the rift’s threat to Israel’s national security. -.VIA ASSOCIATED PRESS

  8. As a footnote to the Ohio derailment and while the legal stuff is ongoing, hours of video footage regarding it have disappeared.
  9. Yes, so far as anyone knows, but its a closely guarded secret.

  11. (I would love to see him make the team so I could see his jersey) Riders sign American linebacker La’Akea Kaho’ohanohano-Davis By 3Down Staff -March 23, 2023 The Saskatchewan Roughriders have added American linebacker La’Akea Kaho’ohanohano-Davis to their roster ahead of the 2023 season. The six-foot-one, 215-pound defender attended Southern Utah University for five seasons, spread across two separate stints with the school from 2016 to 2017 and again from 2018 to 2021. He was named a first-team All-Big Sky selection in 2020 after recording 57 tackles and seven sacks. He earned a second-team selection in 2021 after leading the team with 73 tackles and adding three sacks and an interception. The native of Hawaii played 20 career games with the Thunderbirds, recording 140 tackles, 13.5 tackles for a loss, 11 sacks, one interception, three pass knockdowns, and two forced fumbles. Kaho’ohanohano-Davis went unselected in the 2022 NFL Draft and later attended rookie mini-camp with the Seattle Seahawks.
  12. Beethoven Died of Alcoholism, Promiscuity and a Weak Liver The answers to decades-long questions about the health issues suffered by famed classical music composer Ludwig van Beethoven have been found in the most unexpected of places. Thanks to in-depth examination of his hair, scientists have revealed that Beethoven was not just a hard boozer with a sexually transmitted disease. It turns out he was also genetically destined to suffer liver disease. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a German pianist and composer who is often cited as one of the forefathers of Western classical music. Born in December 1770 his first recorded piece of music was a set of nine piano variations composed in 1782, when he was just twelve. Despite being a child prodigy, by the time he was 28 he had reported his first hearing problems. Whether Beethoven contracted syphilis has been debated for decades, but it is known that he enjoyed the company of prostitutes and his own doctor between 1806 and 1816 insisted he did indeed have syphilis. By the time Beethoven was 44 or 45, he was totally deaf, and unable to communicate without written notes which he passed back and forth to his colleagues, visitors and friends. Now, a team of researchers has examined DNA collected from a substantial sample of Beethoven's hair: 5 meters and 55 centimeters (18 ft) to be precise. Thanks to the use of cutting-edge scientific analysis, it has finally been determined that the musical giant had indeed contracted hepatitis B , and that he “drank himself to death” by accelerating his inherited liver disease. (And his Dad wasn't his biological father).

  15. Taped Call Captures Putin’s Troops in Self-Loathing Spiral‘ Published Mar. 23, 2023 2:33PM ET -Reuters Russian troops in Ukraine say the situation has become such an embarrassment more than a year into the war that they’re convinced no one wants to be there in the first place. That’s according to a two-and-a-half minute recording released Thursday by Ukrainian intelligence that is said to capture a phone chat between two fed-up Russian soldiers discussing mass desertions. After 119 soldiers fled the front line, one of the unnamed soldiers said, many of them were tracked down and 70 of them were hit with criminal charges, while 30 were “jailed for ******* two years or more.” Instead of venting his frustrations at his AWOL fellow troops, the man scoffed at military officials who he said “once again” explained to all the soldiers that they’d be tossed in jail if they left their positions for more than 48 hours, something that has apparently become a popular trend.
  16. 'He feels aggrieved': Mary Trump warns her uncle will play the grievance card to the hilt if indicted One of former President Donald Trump's many outspoken critics is a member of his own family: niece Mary L. Trump, a clinical psychologist/author who is the daughter of the late Fred Trump, Jr. (a brother of the ex-president) and a cousin of Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump, Jr., Eric Trump and Tiffany Trump. But when Mary Trump criticizes her uncle during frequent appearances on CNN and MSNBC, her tone isn't one of total contempt. Even when she is describing the former president as dangerous, corrupt and anti-democracy, Mary Trump sounds like a part of her feels badly for her uncle — who, she believes, has serious mental health issues. That tone was evident when she made a late March appearance on MSNBC and discussed his legal problems with one of his scathing critics: liberal host Lawrence O'Donnell. O'Donnell asked Donald Trump's niece to weigh in on what the ex-president is "feeling" about a possible criminal indictment from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Jr. over alleged hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels. And she predicted that he will, true to form, use it to play the "grievance" card. Mary Trump told O'Donnell, "The emotion of sadness is not in Donald's arsenal. What he's feeling, to the extent that he's feeling anything, is self-pity. And that makes sense. He's also feeling grievance, but he feels aggrieved every time he walks into the Mar-a-Lago dining room and his paid patrons don't pay him sufficient homage, right? So, none of this is new." https://www.alternet.org/trump/mary-trump-2659650835/

  18. Trump Executive Privilege Claim Shattered As Judge Orders Mark Meadows And Others To Testify Special Counsel Jack Smith scored a big win as a federal judge rejected Trump's claim of executive privilege and ordered Mark Meadows and others to testify about the plot to overturn the 2020 election.

  20. I heard of someone who obsessed over Pickachu to the point where he wound up in the ICU.
  21. Agreed about the dubiousness of the entirety of the report. That the Chinese embassy chose to "leak" it to the least trustworthy news network in Canada with the most right-wing bias sets off alarm bells.
  22. Idaho Republicans want to keep doctors from treating ectopic pregnancies “We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!” exclaims a disgruntled philosopher in Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The philosophers had banded together to protest the advancement of computer science, which they believed was imposing entirely too much clarity on the existential mysteries that gave them job security. The Idaho GOP and a coalition of antichoice groups in the state are taking a similar tack regarding the state’s murky and punitive abortion law. This session, two Republican state legislators introduced a bill that would clarify key concepts in the state’s felony abortion ban. These include defining when an abortion is necessary to save the life of the pregnant person, and confirming once and for all that it’s not a felony to treat ectopic and nonviable pregnancies and to remove fetuses that have died. It would also stop doctors who perform life-saving abortions from automatically being dragged before a judge to plead medical necessity as an affirmative defense. Whatever happens with the felony abortion ban, Idaho doctors risk devastating lawsuits for treating one of the most common and dangerous gynecological emergencies: ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancies are fertilized eggs that implant outside the uterus. These rogue ova will never become babies and they can kill the patient if they’re allowed to swell like a tumor on a speedrun. It’s all about the uncertainty. A doctor doesn’t know if she’s going to get sued by a vengeful ex for treating an ectopic pregnancy, but it could happen. Uncertainty can be even more paralyzing than a clear-cut but draconian rule. https://www.alternet.org/idaho-republicans-2659652264/
  23. Report Signals Humiliating End for Russia’s Shadow Army in Ukraine Yevgeny Prigozhin is preparing to pull his Wagner Group mercenaries’ attention away from the war in Ukraine, according to a Bloomberg report that cites sources familiar with the matter. His current plan is to focus the private mercenaries’ focus back to countries in Africa, such as Sudan, Mali, and the Central African Republic, where Wagner has deployed forces. On Monday, Wagner posted a recruitment notice offering deployments to African countries that would last between nine to 14 months, Bloomberg reported. The apparent decision to recalibrate Wagner operations in Ukraine comes after a series of setbacks Wagner has faced in trying to work with the Russian government to wage war in Ukraine. Prigozhin, who enlisted private mercenaries from prison, was blocked in recent weeks from recruiting from prisons. His colleague was also recently barred from accessing Russia’s military command in Ukraine. Tensions have spilled over into the public eye as well. Wagner Group has also had to resort to pleading with Russia in various videos posted to social media to provide more ammunition they said was desperately needed to try to fight in Ukraine, to no avail. It’s not clear how quickly the changes will go into effect. Evidence has emerged this week that suggests Wagner Group is still fighting in southern Bakhmut as well as Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Bohdanivka, and in the direction of Predtechyne, according to the Institute for the Study of War. -Reuters
