  1. I dont think the NHL cares as much about who pays for an arena. They've helped lobby government for tax payer assistance for sure and one of the reasons they fight so hard in Glendale is because they did lobby so hard to get the taxpayer to build the place and they dont want any other city using that example to say the NHL cut and run. Its beneficial to the league for the government to own an arena. Look at Atlanta. Spirit of Atlanta (or whatever they were called) had exclusive rights to operate the arena and since they didnt want to own an NHL team, that killed it. It wouldnt have mattered if someone else in Atlanta wanted to own the team, there was nowhere to play. Bettman has been pretty consistent in saying a city needs 1) a building 2) an owner 3) fans. The Jets left Winnipeg because they essentially only had 1 of the three. The Coyotes are close to having none of the three.
  2. So being against bigotry towards LGBT people is somehow against Christianity? HA! How can someone actually be against the basic rights of other humans and then claim their right to freedom of expression or religion is being trampled when people rightly call that bigotry? The sarcastic use of #lovewins exposes the inherent prejudice. How is Jenner living her life somehow a sin against Christianity or a violation of anyones religious freedom? Would you also argue that its perfectly acceptable to hate black people? Again, the KKK exists and has the right to their opinions but it doesnt make their opinions any less wrong just because they are free to express them. Again, you can claim the earth is flat. Doesnt make it right. But you're allowed to think it. Taking something I wrote and making it a left vs right battle is hilarious since Im far from a lefty. As soon as someone makes it a religious argument, they've lost because it simply cant stand up to scrutiny. As for Facebook, I didnt report a post. I replied to a post. And engaged in a discussion. If the bigots are free to express their opinions, which they are, why arent I free to express mine. The reason I chose to respond to that particular person was because he was a friend who I knew to have relatives and friends in the LGBT community. Not everything is an opinion. Some things are simply facts. As Fraser so eloquently explained. Fraser - you're spot on and very articulate. Some people will never get it. I come from a religous family and it saddens me that people use religion as an excuse for barely contained bigotry.
  3. They get away with it because the catch-all excuse of "our climate" which doesnt explain why other places with the same climate are much better. But the excuse fends off any sort of wide protest
  4. Isnt "co-op" endeavours a form of sharing? Like a downtown condo having a co-op car for residents to use? The thing with Uber is, its good for the consumer but its the taxi lobby that is raising the stink. Im no expert but just a casual observer and I see a lot of people praising Uber. Since they operate in a competitive environment, ultimately service to the customer is what they rely on. On the flip side, if the Taxi industry is regulated and Uber is essentially the same thing, shouldnt they fall under the regulation? The issue for Taxi companies is wanting Uber to go away, not become another competitor. In my own experience being involved in professional wrestling, Manitoba used to regulate our industry under the Boxing Commission (as many provinces and states did for many years). One of the reasons WWE basically came out and said "wrestling is fake" was to get out from under the commissions, many of which were corrupt. Manitoba was no difference. if you werent a friend of the Commission, you were screwed. You had to put up a bond for every show and if there was a single complaint, your bond could be help up while an investigation was conducted and in a competitive industry, there would always be a "complaint". Plus, if it took three months for your bond to be returned and you had ten shows in that time, you were putting up ten bonds. I came in to it when there was no Commission. And the benefit to the commission was only one or two people running shows because no one else could afford it and no one was else was allowed in without the old timers allowing it. Wrestlers had to be licensed and sponsored into the business. Without a COmmission, anyone could hold a show and the industry became "self regulated" which basically meant everyone tried to **** each other over and if one guy had a high standard, three others didnt. But it was free market. One of the local promotions had a show where a wrestler performed intoxicated and suffered a stinger. The promoter, being a shameless shill, reported it to all the media for the PR...and it back fired as the government received complaints and launched a study into whether pro wrestling should be back under the commission. Luckily, a guy who "got" the business won the bid to do the study as other people who applied to do it had old ties to the former Commission. We managed to beat back the idea of bringing the commission back. But it was a battle. Look at New York which still wont allow UFC to hold events. Ridiculous. Regulation can be good. But also bad. Hard to say really. But on the first analogy, my buddy bought a house that backs onto a major road. Many of his neighbors have professional signage anchored to their back fences for advertising. So my friend figured he'd do the same and make a few bucks. His neighbor said that a lot of people in the community are upset about it and the Councillor is supposedly going to crack down as its not legal even though its their own property. Remember a few years ago when a property owner erected a sign (I think it was South Pembina) on their property warning of a speed trap ahead? The city went onto their property and tore the sign down. I got a citation for long grass and when I inquired, the officer said my grass was fine but I had a "few weeds" in my backyard that were too high. Fine. I then reported Bridgewater for 4-5 foot high wild grass and weeds and was told during the build process it's the developer's responsibility to tend city land. Fair enough, but they were ignoring the city by-laws..."not our problem" said the city. three weeds in my yard = problem. Entire neighborhood in disarray = talk to the developer.

  7. I think people don't realize just how big a deal Bruce Jenner was in the 70s. He was one of the most famous non-pro athletes of that decade. I grew up in the deep sticks with two TV channels (weather and reception permitting) and two shitty local radio stations and no daily newspaper and I knew who he was. Exactly. Pretty much the epitome of American male athleticism. He was the manliness of men. And to me, thats what so special about what she's doing now. Funny thing, in the facebook debate they at first said Caitlyn Jenner never won anything because she's now a woman. And then it was well she's retired and retired athletes shouldnt receive awards or honors. I asked 'so when a player has his jersey retired, you dont believe that is appropriate?' "uh..well...thats different". Sure. I only vaguely recall Bruce Jenner. But learning about her now and seeing the 20/20 special it really hits home what a special and huge athlete she was.
  8. Absolutely! Great post. In my debate on facebook when asked why couldnt Jenner accept a "Golden Globes" (weird suggestion) rather than a sports award my response was a) she wan a gold medal in the decathlon for crying out loud and the point is bringing awareness to an issue that transcends sports. As the discussion continued and people felt it was their place to decide what standards ESPN uses, I simply copied and pasted the award qualifications which include the words "transcends sports". I think the benefit and point of it was pretty obvious. The people that dont see it or wont accept it are looking for reasons to be critical of someone because of her orientation and lack the courage to simply admit they are prejudiced. If you or me came out or transitioned to woman, we could do so relatively privately. Jenner has no such option. Rather then try and "hide" or seek out a privacy she could never truly find, she has chosen to go the other way. She owes the world nothing. And yet she wants to use her celebrity to try and bring change knowing she will be savaged by many people. Such commendable courage.
  9. the NHL has said they will focus on Vegas and Quebec now. So i'd say its as much a done deal as can be. As long as both parties have the cash. Who's the prospective owner in Vegas? MGM is a part of it, no? But not the primary?
  10. LOL Finally someone who has an opinion actually does some research. Too bad you exposed your biased with your sarcasm. Unfortunately, ABC and the ESPY producers have denied that is true. It's a wonderful example of the subtle LGBT-phobia that is sweeping social media. "I have no problem with her if she wants to be a woman but..." The timeline also doesnt support it. And ultimately, the point of the award was to have a large platform to speak on an important issue. It was a win-win. (A lose for the bigots I guess). Again, this isnt about disagreeing with an opinion. If you like your steak well done and I like it rare, thats a difference of opinion. LGBT rights are not opinions. If you disagree, its not a difference of opinion, it's you are wrong. If it's your opinion that the earth is flat, you are entitled to that opinion. But its still wrong.
  11. But isnt that the issue? That Seattle wants to bring back the NBA and the NHL is sort of a secondary idea to fill arena dates? But they dont want the NHL without the NBA? If the NHL thought they'd get multiple bids, they once again over-valued themselves. How will it look if they dont award franchises to Vegas and Quebec now if those were the only two to apply? Vegas is a slam dunk. Its Quebec that intrigues me because it makes too much sense. The politics could be an issue though. And I think the NHL likes to have a slam dunk in their back pocket for future problems. If they go Vegas and Quebec, they better hope Florida and PHX dont need to relocate anytime soon...
  12. I think there is some greater plan for 59. I havent been out to Grand Beach this year yet but last time I was, they were doing some big project at the Grand Beach turn-off. How's that looking?
  13. Not sure if this will eventually deserve its own thread (US Federal Election) but I have a strong interest in the subject though my predictions are usually wrong. My one big correct prediction was when John McCain chose Sarah Palin as his running mate. There was a local political radio show happening at the same time and talking about what an ingenious move it was. I called in and said McCain just lost the election. It was such a transparent move to capture women voters from the Hilary supporters and provide some youth to the campaign. Voters would see through it, was my position and it lets the Democrats pounce on the "heartbeat away from the job" debate. Anyway, things are exciting already with Donald Trump injecting his brand of crazy. His immigration position actually resulted in him leading the polls. His anti-McCain remarks will likely hurt him though. Makes me wonder though, will Trump play nice to stay in the good graces of the GOP or will he call their bluff and threaten to run as an independent (which would split the right vote)? Does he have any staying power? Maybe if he ran as an indy he could get Jesse Ventura as his running mate... ;-) Early prediction: Jeb vs Hilary. And I think the right will shoot themselves in the foot leading to President Hilary Clinton
  14. Great to see Jenner get the ESPN Courage award and good on ESPN for contributing to the message. Ofcourse as some people predicted it's fuel for the anti-LGBT crowd who can now preface their position with "Im not against LGBT but...". I even had a "friend" on facebook explain to me that Jenner is not a former athlete because Caitlyn and Bruce are two different people now. Actually had a lengthy debate where the anti crowd jumped on the bandwagon of arguing against the award when in reality they are big phobes. One person said if you want to give a gay person the award, give it to Michael Sam (he was given it last year which I pointed out) and then went with the "only current athletes should be honoured". Ofcourse, a simple search of the award explains the qualifications. Shut down the debate pretty quickly.
  15. It really makes me wonder what goes on in the mind of people to be filled with such hate as to join the KKK. The fact the KKK protested the removal of the flag is actually a plus on the side of the "removers".
  16. So...they got two bids? To fill two expansion slots? I assume the NHL thought they'd have numerous bids...
  17. That's definitely an issue too. I'd like to see the NHL refuse a separatist. Will money trump that?
  18. I tend to agree but if Vegas and Quebec are the only two to submit bids, it sort of limits the NHL's options. They like Quebec for the same reason they liked Winnipeg - its an easy soft landing spot. But Quebec wont behave like Winnipeg did - they wont wait forever. The other consideration is the NHL will get more from expansion than relocation so without other options they might give in to Quebec for the massive expansion fee. If Florida or PHX need to relocate down the road, a city that is not as willing to pay $400M might be a softer landing spot. And there are people who swear Florida isnt going anyway.
  19. I've had bad luck. Went through three or four PC's in a few year period. Then got a Mac. It's lasted at least six years now. Stil works well though a bit slow and I filled up the HD awhile back.
  20. One of the crappiest things about getting people to do work on your house no matter what it is. It's ridiculous what they're allowed to get away with when they are not good. My brother in law went with this guy to replace all his windows and gave him $6000 up front and the guy then went bankrupt. I'm thinking A) why did you go with someone that hasn't been around for a long time and B ) why the hell would you give him that kind of money up front? We originally hired Adamson Roofing last summer after getting many estimates. They were super to deal with at first. Gave them a $1500 upfront. They cashed it right away and then kept missing their start dates. We eventually got into December and I had enough and asked for the money back. They said no problem we will mail you a cheque. It never came. They said oh weird because we nailed it but we will cancel it and send another. Never came. Finally talked to the owner who admitted no cheque had ever been sent (his manager simply lied). Gave me many excuses and tried to gain sympathy (I won't be in office due to a funeral etc). I was going out of town for a week and said if I get back and the cheque isn't in my mail box there will be trouble. He vowed it would be. It wasn't. I took a day off work and went hunting for them. They had refused to give us an office address. Used google and found three office addresses. They were no longer at any of them. As I'm driving down grant low and behold what's in front of me? An adamson roofing truck. I tail the guy around the city wanting to find an address. He goes to a cafe in St B for awhile then to a dog park. A woman drives up and they both go off walking a dog. Finally Id had enough and wrote a note and pinned it on his windshield. It read "you're going to want to call me immediately..." Called within an hour and I had my cheque the next day. I guess me finding him in a secluded dog park with his "date" was intimidating enough. Ofcourse he post dated the cheque. But I was able to cash it.
  21. You'd think Vegas and Quebec are the easy "ins" but there seems to be reluctance to go with Quebec. They're going to have riots in the street if they ignore Quebec
  22. Big decision. Hard to know who to trust. Our work attracted a lot of local attention as it made a huge difference. Here's link to before and after of my house on Twitter: https://mobile.twitter.com/pcwandrew/status/616001993002192896
  23. My tv isn't smart. I got a smart Blu Ray player that actually came with a Netflix button on the remote. Press it and it automatically loads up my Netflix. The gf has watched on the computer before but I dont. TV or bust.
