  1. One idea might be to move Burni to 4C and Petan to 3LW. Gives the third line more offensive upside and makes the 4th more effective at keeping the puck away from the opposition.
  2. Demos are fairly old actually. Mostly old fans who have watched for years and young kids. They lost the "cool" edge that attracted the 18-30 demo. Most shocking they lost all of WCW's audience almost immediately. They never learned from that and still adhere to the idea that they know what you want better than you do.
  3. @EdmontonOilers: Coach McLellan says @cmcdavid97 has an upper-body injury that will keep him out long term.
  4. Sinking slowly Raw set yet another 18-year low in audience last night with 3.24 million viewers, down slightly from the 3.27 million viewers for the 10/12 show. This show seemed to hit an audience base of about 3.18 million viewers, which is where the second hour fell to, with the Survivor Series match gimmick in the third hour actually increasing slightly over hour two. But the first two hours were way down from usual levels. It wasn't the football competition, and it was without any baseball competition. But the show didn't have the benefit of coming the day after a PPV like last week, and had none of the big guns like John Cena, Brock Lesnar nor any special attractions.
  5. Big difference between fantasy and fiction. Good Star Trek was mostly grounded on realism It's okay to have episodes of the fantastic but if that's the basis of the series then it's not Star Trek.
  6. (CNN)Antarctica is gaining more ice than it has lost, according to a new study by NASA. A NASA team came to this conclusion after scientists examined the heights of the region's ice sheet measured from satellites. The new methods used by scientists to come to this study's conclusion, such as measuring small height changes in the ice over large areas, warrant consideration. But the findings do conflict with more than a decade of research indicating that Antarctica is losing ice and that the loss has contributed to rising global sea levels Many scientists agree that the Antarctic Peninsula and parts of West Antarctica are losing ice and that the rate of loss is increasing. In the eastern part of the continent and part of the interior, there have been ice gains. These gains, scientists from the study say, are more than the losses in the rest of the region. This net gain in ice would mean that Antarctica would not be contributing to sea level rises, but could help offset some of the major ice losses in places from Greenland and glaciers worldwide. Scientists suspect that increased snowfall, which began 10,000 years ago, is the reason for the gain in Antarctica. Over the years, the snow has accumulated and compacted to form ice. ****Hmmmm, so a change in weather 10,000 years ago is impacting the climate today? Thats weird. I dont recall the industrialized age beginning 10,000 years ago. Weird. I wonder if the earth goes through regular warming and cooling trends over the course of it's lifetime, regardless of the actions of man. Wouldnt that be something.
  7. I know they gave that silly explanation for the massively advanced Enterprise, but it was still silly. A scan can tell you how to build and use 25th century technology? Uh huh. It was just an excuse to show off modern SFX. Imagine if the Hunt for Red October took place on a sub that looked like a luxury cruise ship.
  8. Im strongly against going beyond the end of Voyager. And here's why. Star Trek is Science Fiction, not fantasy. Its supposed to the idea of us today if we dont blow ourselves up. Its looking into the future and seeing what the best of mankind eventually becomes. But its close enough to today to be familar. If we go too far into the future, we end up with science that looks like magic. TOS had the transporter, warp, phasers, tractor beams. TNG had holodeck, nanobots, AI. And ofcourse time travel existed throughout and by the time of Voyager and Enterprise it was shown to be a normal thing by the next generation beyond Voyager. It needs to remain grounded. TOS was explored by that series and the films. The TNG era was mined significantly by TNG, Voyager and DS9. The era with the least exploration was between today and TOS with Enterprise representing a very minor bit. I'd prefer something more in keeping with Earth and how we rise out of all the issues of today to be a peaceful space-faring species. I want space travel to seem hard and complicated and dangerous. The Berman Trek made tension difficult because there were no inter-human issues. DS9 flipped that by making space dangerous again, making it clear the darkness of humanity still existed and it was a fight to be better than our demons but to overcome the evil and bad intentions that existed out there. My two cents.
  9. Im all for women in power. But hopfully this isnt change for change sake. The proof will be in the pudding though.
  10. That's the speculation right now. CBS owns the original characters and linceses them to Paramount for the new films. Paramount owns the "new" universe and dirivitives. Alex Kurtzman (Exec Producer of the new series) was involved in the two films but is no longer involved with the films. So who knows what the answer is but for CBS, it prbably makes more sense to pretend the films dont exist. The second big question is which time period to take place in. Personally, if they havent already talked to William Shatner, they are nuts.
  11. What a **** show.
  12. Tim Campbell @FPTimCampbell Dustin Byfuglien figures he's getting "the sh-- end of the stick," from the #NHL on his hit on Gallagher. #NHLJets #breakingnews So...we warned you three times to stop delivering devasating but legal bodychecks. Okay. I guess Buff needs to get written permission from the opposition to body check them. Or will the half pints in this league only have to be concerned with Toby checking them?
  13. I think they did a decent job of making the technology work. I think people are willing to accept modern SFX and production design in the sense, if TOS had today's effects, would it look completely different? I dont think it has to. Enterprise, I think, took the position of rather then working backwards from TOS, working forwards from today and being something that could exist 150 years from now if we had discovered warp drive. The uniforms looked like crosses between NASA flight suits and TOS coloured uniforms. Transporters were dangerous and not allowed for living things. They didnt have tractor beams. Quarters were small. The problem is, they ignored all of that pretty quick. And in the first episode they completely shattered the canon reasons were strife with the Klingons and made Kronos "close". And the Vulcans being bad guys didnt help either. One of the issues with Star Trek 09 film was what they did to the Enterprise. The Kelvin in the opening scene was pretty cool and in keeping with a "TOS with modern effects" in my opinion. But the Enterprise was three times as large as the original with the Apple-inspired iBridge and a sense of technology that was too advanced, too slick. And this ramped down the tension of humans on the final frontier of dangerous space travel. It made it safe and sterile. There was no reason for those choices other than the film makers wanting to replace established Trek with "new" Trek. If it was me, the Kelvin would have been the TOS-era Enterprise, brought to the big screen faithfully with modern touches amounting to simple enhanced effects. Captain Robert April in command. Have the same scenario happen and have it be the Enterprise destroyed. Then the "new" Enterprise being the "A". It would have been more emotional, signalled a very distinct change in the timeline and solved some other problems too (like why they built a shipyards in the middle Iowa).
  14. Im curious how the parents of the other children feel? Im all for gay rights, for sure. But the rights of one shouldnt over ride the rights of the others. So if I understand this correctly, a person born a boy, identifies as a girl has the right to change and shower with the girls. So how do the girls feel about that? And what precautions are in place to avoid abuse, exploitation and the small chance some boy claims to be a girl so he can go shower with the girls?
  15. I disagree with the idea Enterprise wasnt what people wanted. it debuted with 12 million viewers and held steady til about mid-way through the first season before it dropped it a bit. It then dropped every season. I think it was a great concept and a terrible execution. People expected a real prequel. It wasnt. It was essentially Voyager with a new crew. I know the studio screwed them a little because the original idea was to be earth-based for the first season to build tension and anticipation for the launch of the ship (or so Berman claims). Which is how it should have gone. By the time Manny Coto came along and made it a true prequel to TOS with some good stories, it was too late.
  16. Not every show is for everyone. I can't watch Game of Thrones. Which is odd since I love all of that mid-evil stuff, D&D and what not. I hate fantasy and Lord of the Rings stuff but I love Game of Thrones. It might be the violence and nudity. lol Although the trend to kill off main characters for chock value is not endearing me... (same goes with Walking Dead)
  17. I mean the widely held feeling the Blackhawks' presser was ill advised, as was Patrick Kane Bobblehead night. Its possible they were privvy to details that made them comfident no charges would be laid but thats thumbing your nose at it if you essentially act in a way that the investigation is moot before its completed. As for the police, in cases like this, its often the DA that makes the decision, not the police. Even here, they go to the Crown for Crown Opinion a lot. The Crown is obligated by law not to file charges unless they have a reasonable expectation of winning at trial but that is often not how they do business. One only needs to see how many charges are stayed to realise they didnt need to be filed in the first place. And yes, we cant say with certainty the leaks are accurate, they were widely reported. If she was a crackpot and this accusation was completely unfounded, there would not have been an investigation beyond the cops deeming her uncredible and the act being impossible to have occured. We had a he said/she said and he had a dubious past and she "acted" like a victim. The DA had assembled the Grand Jury (which almost never goes in the favour of the accused) though he suspended it. But certainly, we wont know. They might have got it right this time. But had he been charged, they'd look awfully bad.
  18. Top of a slippery slope here? (CNN)The U.S. Department of Education found a Chicago-area school district discriminated against a transgender student by failing to provide her full access to girls' locker rooms. "All students deserve the opportunity to participate equally in school programs and activities -- this is a basic civil right," Assistant U.S. Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine Lhamon said in a statement Monday. The student who hasn't been publicly identified participates on a girls' sports team, but has been required to change and shower separately from her teammates and classmates. The DOE launched the investigation following a 2013 complaint by the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, which is representing her. "The Department of Education's decision makes clear that what my school did was wrong," the student said in statement from the ACLU. "I hope no other student, anywhere, is forced to confront this indignity. It is a good day for all students, but especially those who are transgender all across the nation." Township High School District 211 defended its stance, saying it has been responsive to the needs of its transgender students. "We do not agree with (the DOE's) decision and remain strong in our belief that the District's course of action, including private changing stations in our locker rooms, appropriately serves the dignity and privacy of all students in our educational environment," the district said in a statement. "This decision makes me extremely happy -- because of what it means for me, personally, and for countless others," the student said. "The district's policy stigmatized me, often making me feel like I was not a 'normal person.'"
  19. Accusations arent enough. But there are known facts in this case which lend credence to the accuser. Its entirely possible she was lying or mentally ill but then her contact with Kane was purely coincedental, her friend begging her to stay was coincedental, her going to the hospital, going to police etc...its generally in keeping with someone who believes they were assaulted. If the DA charged Kane, we'd all be in agreement the NHL should have suspended him. Again, hindsight being hindsight. I think more damage is done to the process and the rights of victims to *not* suspend a millionaire hockey player with a history of issues who wont miss a single paycheque then suspending him, letting an investigation play out and reinstating him when the DA declines to proceed. There are many reasons why a victim might stop cooperating. It doesnt mean she wasnt assaulted. Had she been in it for a payday she went about it wrong. Or she did get a payday in which case, Kane did do something and bought his way out of it. We might not know for awhile, if ever. This result might vindicate the Hawks' handling of it but I'd dare say thumbing your nose at a rape allegation is never something to be proud of, vidication or not.
  20. I do believe he should have been suspended. The facts we do know dont paint a flatering picture of Kane. It doesnt mean he raped her. But it does mean his judgement is flawed. Should he be suspended for flawed judgement? Well no. But I also think a suspension doesnt neccisarily have to be in place until the DA steps to a mic and declares charges or no charges. I would have suspended him based on the seriousness of the allegations with the NHL announcing their own investigation. And if the NHL then deemed it willing to lift the suspension in September, October etc. So be it. Hindsight is always 20/20. But precluding a scenario where a complete stranger with zero evidence walks into a police station and randomly accuses a celebrity, I think its always best to err on the side of being pro-active. Imagine if he had not played at all. So he missed, what 12 games? The NHL steps up today and says the suspension is lifted and they thank Kane for his cooperation. Everyone pats the NHL on the back and acknowledges Kane did the right thing in laying low and regardless of the cloud which will always hang over him, he can move forward. He never loses a dollar. It hurts the Blackhawks for 12 games but thats the price of doing business, especially with someone who has routinely brushed off his alcohol issues. So in short, I'd err on the side of being pro-active and careful. In Canada, this happens all the time. And I dare say, had Kane not been a celebirty it would have happened there too, where the DA (or Crown) routinely charge people based on accusations and minimal (if any) evidence with the idea they will sort it out later. I think Kane got the benefit of the doubt based on celebrity.
  21. Opinions vary but I'd certainly disagree with that. The Original Series: 79 Episodes The Animated Series: 22 Episodes The Next Generation: 176 Episodes Deep Space Nine: 176 Episodes Voyager: 172 Episodes Enterprise: 92 Episodes That's 695 Episodes Not including the Animated Series. Plus over 23 hours of films. Not every episodes of TOS was a winner but the series is generally regarded as a great series and certainly, for most Trek fans, is the Holy Grail. TNG averaged 20 million viewers and was a bonafide hit and won many awards. By the 3rd season it really found its groove and was very good television. Watching it now, it doesnt completely hold up and is somewhat a product of it's time but for its time, it was great. Deep Space 9 is the critically acclaimed by most fans and critics. It never scored like TNG but the bloom was off the rose by then and it didnt have the support of Star Trek's resident guru Rick Berman who disliked the war stories, grittiness and episodic nature of the program. Its still my favourite though. I always say that the TOS films made the original supporting cast think it was an ensemble when it wasnt. Where as the TNG films smartly accepted that it wasnt really an ensemble. DS9 embraced the very best of the ensemble concept. Voyager was a great concept with horrible execution under the guidance of Jeri Taylor. More concerned with pushing a woman as Captain then adhereing to it's concept, it was a superficial, preachy show where nothing mattered. It was a show trying to say something but without the talent to say it. It was a series desperate for episodic story-telling and grit and yet became known for hitting the re-set button every episode. By the time Enterprise came along, the Rick Berman era was old, tired. The best writers had moved away from the franchise and only the hacks remained. Because Berman didnt like DS9, he let his best talent leave. Make no mistake, Enterprise was the right concept at the right time and could have saved the franchise. But it never lived up to its own concept and was afraid to be gritty and wasnt willing to let the roadblocks inherient with the timeline and concept stop it from telling the same lame stories this team had been telling since TNG. I liked the production design of Enterprise from the ships to the uniforms. It was emotionally invokative of OUR time. I even liked the theme song. But they solved all their problems way too soon. Phasers, transporters etc. And never paid off on the ill-advised mystery time traveller (who I think was going to be either Future Archer or James Kirk if they had gotten another season). So I wouldnt say 80-20 split of crap to good. I think its a majority of good of various shades. The biggest issue with Star Trek is how CBS treated it over the years. They never respected it and assumed hardcore Trekkies would always support it. And that is the fear with this new TV show with the announcement it will live on CBS All Access steaming service for $6/month and that isnt even Commercial Free. Doh!
  22. Jared S. Hopkins @JaredSHopkins Patrick Kane accuser no longer cooperating in rape investigation in Western, NY: report http://trib.in/1Q3D66s Retweeted by Keith McCullough And thats a wrap. I wonder if she got sick of the whole process or received a pay off. Or, ofcourse, if she was lying.
  23. Interesting. SOme theatres are getting in front of the Star Wars cosplay thing by announcing various costuming bans. Cinemark seems to be banning everything including masks, face paint, light sabers etc. AMC is just banning masks and "blasters". Biggest film opening ever...a bit of an ominous feeling.
  24. Not much of a choice in moving. Glendale broke the lease. They had to agree on a lease deal for this season or the coyotes were homeless. Playing in downtown PHX would be a lot better for them. It would hve to be a great deal if it's a shared situation with the Suns because the coyotes don't generate enough revenue on their own to make it work without non-hockey revenue. But it's a life line.
  25. Realistically a move back to downtown PHX in a shared facility with the Suns might be the thing that finally saves the coyotes. http://arizonasports.com/story/436156/coyotes-in-discussions-with-at-least-three-separate-groups-for-new-valley-arena/ GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Coyotes will keep a close eye on the upcoming Glendale elections, starting with Tuesday’s recall election for councilmember Gary Sherwood, who faces a major challenge from Ray Malnar in the Sahuaro District. Unless there is a significant change in that city’s leadership at next year’s Mayoral and city council elections, however, the Coyotes are finished dealing with Glendale. In all probability, they are finished anyway after the city voided their 15-year arena lease and management agreement in June, and then informed the Coyotes they would be seeking their own arena manager by beginning an RFP process. “At some point you have to make a decision that you can’t continue to talk to a wall,” Coyotes co-owner, president and CEO Anthony LeBlanc said. “You have to accept reality and look at what your alternatives are. That’s where we are right now.” LeBlanc declined to discuss many specifics of those alternatives, but he did say discussions (not negotiations) have been ongoing for about a month with several groups on a new arena in the Valley, and he did name one well-known possibility. “I don’t think anything has progressed to a point where it would be prudent to state what options look like but things are moving pretty quickly; in particular with a couple of these options,” he said. “The city of Phoenix has been the most vocal. They have an NBA franchise (Suns) that they are very tied to and they want to ensure there’s no hiccup in regards to that. “We’re working as closely as we can to understand what all the options look like and there are other communities and stakeholders we are talking to.” As the team eyes its future, Arizona Sports has learned that there are at least three significant possibilities for the Coyotes to remain in the Valley when their agreement with Glendale expires after the 2016-17 season. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and councilmember Michael Nowakowski have been pushing to bring the Coyotes downtown in a shared facility with the Suns, who are seeking a new arena. It’s no secret the Coyotes have had discussions with Arizona State University and the City of Tempe for an East Valley location. The Coyotes have also had some level of discussion on a Scottsdale location along the 101 corridor near Indian Bend Road with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, but it would be premature to speculate on that location because those discussions are believed to be in their infancy, relative to the other two locations. The Coyotes are finalizing the hiring of an arena consultant this week to help them navigate the various municipalities and possibilities they are considering. If one of those locations pans out, multiple sources have told Arizona Sports that several potential investors have expressed interest in the Coyotes, assuming they leave Glendale for another Valley location. With key members of the IceArizona ownership group buying back some shares from majority owner Andrew Barroway, the Coyotes would likely listen to other potentially interested investors. Although one source said the team is not currently seeking additional investors. When the Coyotes and Glendale reached agreement on a two-year deal to keep the team at Gila River Arena through 2016-17, LeBlanc said his immediate goal was to work out a longer-term deal with the city. That desire waned after Glendale opted to seek an outside arena manager, igniting the latest strife between the ill-matched partners. LeBlanc believes that while Glendale says it wants to keep the Coyotes publicly, its actions belie that statement. He also noted that Broward County recently conducted research that found the county and BB&T Center would be worse off if the Florida Panthers left that arena in Sunrise, Florida, the Sun-Sentinel reported. “They’ve done exhaustive research,” LeBlanc said. “They’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a significant hit to the county’s finances so they’ve gone the other way. They’re working with the team and a collection of financial experts to put together a financial package that ensures the team can stay. “What we’re hearing from the City of Glendale and their representative at Beacon (Sports Capital Management) is not only are they not looking at something like that but they think that we as a hockey team should be subsidizing the city. It’s mind-boggling. “Our hope is that somebody will take a look at what Broward County has done and ask a simple question: ‘Has there been an economic analysis of what happens if the Coyotes leave?’ Unfortunately, if you’re going to ignore the revenue impact of the team being here and you’re only going to look at what your expectation is on the expense side, you’re not going to make the right decisions.” If the Coyotes move forward with one of the new arena proposals, they would need to play in a temporary home after their agreement with Glendale expires in 2017 until construction of the new arena is complete. Talking Stick Resort Arena is the most logical option.
