Do I get my CPC card revoked if I say I am Intrigued by this idea? CTV With all the new initiatives on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s plate – bringing 25,000 Syrian immigrants to Canada, legalizing marijuana, setting up an inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women – how about an easy win, like giving every Canadian adult $15,000 a year? Don’t laugh. It’s something Finland’s government is seriously considering as a way to reduce poverty and unemployment in that country. According to CNN Money, Finland is looking to give every adult Finn a monthly stipend of 800 euros (which works out to about $1200 Canadian) as a replacement to existing state benefits. So, this would replace welfare, employment insurance, child tax benefits – anything that we may be currently receiving. Instead, we’ll each get a flat cheque from the federal government each month. The logic behind the idea is that the current welfare system in Finland is extremely complicated and expensive to maintain, and removing all the infrastructure required to maintain state benefits would result in a massive savings for the country. And they believe it would encourage people currently living on government benefits like welfare to look for work, because many currently make more on welfare than they would taking a low- or minimum-wage job. With the stable, monthly cheque coming in, they would be more inclined to take low-paying jobs to improve their incomes without the penalty of losing their benefits. As for wealthiest people receiving the cheques, they would pay most of the stipend back in taxes. It’s a scenario that sounds eerily familiar to Canada. Our welfare system has been described as “a box with a tight lid” by former chief economist Don Drummond because people must become destitute before they qualify, and once in the system, there’s little motivation to get out of it. “You have no means to absorb setbacks in income or unexpected costs,” Drummond said. “You can’t afford to move to where jobs might be or upgrade your skills.” Each year the Canadian government pays out over $11 billion a year in social assistance, and the bureaucracy required to maintain social programs like welfare and employment insurance cost millions each year. Replacing these costs for a small, centralized department focused on issuing monthly cheques would represent a huge savings for the government. Between 1974 and 1979, Canada experimented with a similar project in the city of Dauphin, Man., in which the social programs were removed and the city’s poorest people were given cheques to boost their incomes to a livable wage. In five years, poverty in the city was completely eliminated and unemployment levels disappeared. Unfortunately, Joe Clark’s Conservatives eliminated the test program when they took office. Finland continues to carefully examine the idea, with a finalized proposal expected for 2016 and a pilot program slated for 2017. In the pilot program, some people will receive 550 Euros ($813 CAN) while maintaining some of their existing benefits, like housing allowances. According to CNN, 69 per cent of Finns are in favour of the system. It’s a program Canada would be wise to monitor closely.

Pens blogger with discussing recent speculation from Dreger (and others) that they are working hard to make a trade but it must be "dollar in, dollar out" If it is going to be a dollar in and dollar out trade you are talking about players like Patric Hornqvist, Chris Kunitz, David Perron, and Rob Scuderi. It goes without saying that each of those players carries a different value on the trade market and one of them has negative value. Dupuis’ “retirement” does change the landscape of what the Penguins can do. Freeing up 3.75M of cap space is significant. For right or wrong players like Dustin Byfuglien can now enter the conversation as a trade target for Pittsburgh. Im not sure I find any of the four mentioned to be overly exciting. I wouldnt be against Kunitz but he still has a year left. Although he fills a weaker position for us (LW). I like Patric but he's got two years left. So no dice. I'd like the Pens #1 draft pick and a prospect...but if they want us to take back salary...I dont see it.

Great post Dascow. Thats very true about them not immediately informing the public of their error. Its entirely possible that the winner, who had checked his ticket against the website and with the Bombers directly, would have assumed he was not the winner and never checked the website again..and thus would never have seen the number change. Seems pretty clear the Bombers caught their mistake but hoped no one would notice. And is it true the only reason we know this happened is because local media asked the winner what took him so long? The Bombers only commented after the fact and after lotteries announced they were looking into it. Perhaps they should have thrown in some lifetime season tickets to keep Mr Richot quiet... Thats also a great point about the former unclaimed prize. Imagine if it came out the same mistake was made...
-
Im not sure who is losing their minds. But it certainly warrants an investigation by the lottery people. It doesnt have to be a witch hunt but its their job to protect the integrity of lotteries. They would be derelict in their duties if they did not look into this. I imagine its as simple as someone typing the wrong number into the website and that mistake being repeated because they were using the website as their source. The easy fix is to post a photo of the winning ticket rather than have someone copy it down. Easy peasy. But if the winner had thrown his ticket out and then they corrected their mistake...what then? He probably sues them. If someone came forward with the ticket that matches the incorrect number and claimed the prize and then the real winner came forward...what them? Basically as far as mistakes go, the Bombers lucked out here. It's worthy of being looked into.

Sure, why not. Whatever. WWE Network and Wrestlemania

You'll have to show me where I said that. I've always known the audience trends older. And wouldnt that be you who's flip flopping since you just said it was only kids watching? Im not the decider on the issue. Im only telling you facts. In the grand scheme of things the demo's dont have wild disparity because it's fairly low numbers but because it's low numbers, small changes have a significant impact. It does sort of fly in the face of logic because people like you and me see WWE having gone from "cool" to "lame" and we both know people in our demo who feel the same. I think what happened is, the older crowd are the diehard fans that always watched. They aren't the "smart mark" fan that follows the ins and outs. They just like their rasslin. They will always watch no matter how good or bad it is. This explains why TNA eroded their audience down to an even older demo. The smark audience likes ROH. They like NXT. Their the type of fan to watch for the "art" of a Daniel Bryan match. UFC did hurt their audience because it siphoned off some of the 18-34 males. The irony being it was a Vince McMahon decision that helped "save" UFC and delivered to UFC their own best demo. If you look at WWE numbers since the attitude era, it's very depressing. If you look at it year over year, I believe its a 16% decline. Which is not insignificant ofcourse. Some of the other negative trends is that they arent seeing the rise in interests for things like the post PPV RAW, a hot shot angle (League of Nations), a title change, a special guest. It used to be even when fans were tuning out, they still "followed" and would tune in for what was expected to be good RAW's...they arent so much anymore which means they arent just not watching, they arent following and those are fans they will be hard-pressed to win back. Their latest surveys seemed to be geared towards RAW vs NXT and Network viewing habits. They see NXT as "cool" and want to know what fans like about NXT versus what they dont like about RAW. And supposedly "changes" are coming. They will be changes to Smackdown to as it flips to USA Network in January. -
"Obviously climate change is real" = evidence. Lol

Well I would hate to call into question the scientific method of determining viewership by what your buddies watch but WWE's best demo is 50+. Second best demo is under 18. The other demos are around the same. And they are losing 18-34 faster than tje others. TNA trends even older. House shows are primarily younger I will grant you that. But people watching the show and the "PPV" events is trending older. WWE's issue isn't just that their angles are lame. Older fans keep watching almost no matter what. They've lost the cool factor. -
The climate people say it's common sense and shut down any debate n

Not really. There's a lot of opinion there. If the earth is warming only because of CO2 why did it warm before? Why will it watm again? Hey let's not worry about isis. Let's fight the sun. Which is going to win eventually anyway no matter what we do. Hey isn't mars going through a warming trend? Must be the human produced green house gasses.

Except the only manure we have is Trudeau.

I don't think the jets had any intention of sending him Back to junior even if he was willing to go. Or else he wouldn't have been in the top six.

The Liquor and Gaming Authority of Manitoba has launched an investigation of the #Bombers regarding the 50-50 at Grey Cup. #BreakingNews **** the winning number was announced at the game but the wrong number was displayed on their website. The winner actually threw his ticket away before retrieving it from the trash as a keepsake. He then looked again when the Bonbers announced there had been no claim yet.

The Legend of Tarzan looks interesting. The film is directed by David Yates and stars Alexander Skarsgård, Margot Robbie, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz, and Djimon Hounsou. It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.

Heard Lapo on H&L yesterday and he made an interesting comment I *think* I heard. He confirmed that part of the deal was he'd have a say in player recruitment (or at least a voice) "something that wasn't the case last time".

There is actually a story I read today, one of those fancy pants advanced stats things that showed Ehlers in a good light. Ill defer to the experts like Maurice and Chevy. But as a fan, I always wanted these players to go before the Jets returned because I liked the tournament so I dont want to be biased. The WJHC is a good tourney and I;d like to see the best junior aged players there. Having said that Ehlers isnt riding the pine here so its not like he's a "junior" player.

NHL more elite level experience then WJHC. Heck AHL more elite level experience then WJHC. You think he'd gain more from two weeks in the AHL then two weeks at the WJHC? I dont. Now, Im no expert on it, but the idea he needs time to grow as a player in the NHL is true but is also irrelevant to the WJHC.

The General Discussion forum is predicated on strong opinions from people who don't know what they're talking about. We should create a forum where only experts can have an opinion and engage in discussion. In fact, citizens should only be allowed to vote in elections if they pass an IQ and knowledge-of-issues test. Certainly, common folk should not be involved. Also, anyone who posts in a thread merely to be critical of other posters without offering their own "expert" opinion would be ridiculed. In a perfect world!

Sure he needs time. He's young. A couple of weeks at Christmas to gain some elite level experience is never a bad thing though. I'd send him. And I wouldnt think twice about it. Especially if he wants to go.

Paul Friesen ✔ @friesensunmedia #NHLJets rookie Ehlers on last year's WJHC: "I love playing for my country. It was amazing." Paul Friesen ✔ @friesensunmedia I asked #NHLJets rookie N Ehlers if the Jets left the WJHC up to him, what would he do: "I don't think they're going to do that." Paul Friesen ✔ @friesensunmedia Ehlers on if his confidence could use the boost of the WJHC. "You know what, I don't think I need that." #NHLJets.
