Not that this really matters in the point you are trying to make here, but Jim Daley had 3 years of Head Coaching experience in Saskatchewan before he became our head coach.

He had an 18 - 36 record there.

The problem is that I don't see a Dave Ritchie equivalent out there.  Can't think of any coach out there right now with experience that I would want.

I stand corrected. In my defense I tried hard to forget Jim Daley entirely!

  2. Like I said on the Washington Redskins thread, what about our team? How many people will be offended by the name "Bombers"? I watched the NFL Network show about the high school team in Barrow, Alaska. The kids in Barrow call themselves Eskimos & not inuit. They were proud of their "Eskimo" history  I heard them refer to that name at least once or twice during the show when they were describing their way of life. I guess they're too young & ignorant to know the word Eskimo offends some guy thousands of miles away in a suit living in Toronto. Or some Inuits across the border in Canada.

Well having spent a good few years in Nunavut (NWT then) I can tell you the 'Eskimo' is absolutely an offensive word to every inuit I ever met.  I love the Eskimo name and history, and I wish people wouldn't take these things so seriously, but it's a slippery slope and at some point there will be a change, I'm sure of it - so why not be proactive and forward-thinking?

  3. The CFL first of all needs to make a fundamental shift reduce the number of flags thrown. If an infraction has absolutely nothing to do with the play result, then either don't throw a flag, or pick it up after and announce that the infraction had no impact on the play. The number of mickey mouse calls is infuriating and are ruining the game.

When the only flags thrown are actual penalties that had an impact on the game, then it becomes much easier to review them.

Yeah Lawless isn't as smart as he thinks he is when he's writing opinion pieces but the man is connected and there is a lot of weight to his rumours. Be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Lawless is the stupidest sports writer in Winnipeg. I won't read his crap and if he is ever on TV I mute it.

Do you ever have a balanced opinion? I get this visual of you yelling every word you speak.

    What an ironic post.

Funny how those who think so highly of themselves as balanced/good always have to pull out the name calling and bullying.

I don't have to be balanced about Lawless. I do not find any redeeming qualities in what he does. I don't read Paul Friesen either, because I think he is often just throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks, but I cannot argue that he does have valid points every so often. Lawless just spews out opinions or information that has not been vetted and in some cases has been flat out made up. I will stick with paying more attention to the real reporters like Penton and co. Again, I may not always agree with them, but they have a much better track record and try to stay away from spreading rumours.

Umm...he didn't call you any names, nor did he bully you.  He's just asking you a valid question and stating his opinion on how you come across.  The only person I see name calling in this post is you calling Lawless stupid.

And I answered it. The thing is I shouldn't have to answer BS questions like it. This forum is for opinions and my OPINION is I don't like Lawless he hasn't provided any enlightenment to the sporting community here. Much like Friesen.

If you don't like my opinion that's fine but making me answer for my opinion while no one else has to is bullying.

Oh, and in case you cannot read he didn't call me names but he did dig into the personal insult pot with his second unneeded sentence.

    good grief man. Grow up.

  5. To me, one of the biggest things this year is that penalties were absolutely just killing offensive rhythms. And a lot of it was ticky tack stuff.

I think if you polled fans, not many of us would want to see big plays called back by silly ticky tack penalties.

I don't think I've thought this through enough to say it's the best idea, but I'd propose something like this - if there is an infraction on the play, unless the penalty being committed directly contributes to the result of the play, then I don't want to see it wipe out the play.

Best example I can give is that huge completion to Romby Bryant that was called back by a hands to the face penalty. What I'd ideally like to see happen there? Apply the penalty after the gain. It was illegal but it had no direct impact on the play itself. So if Romby scores there ... put the Bombers on the 10. The only caveat I'd put on this is that objectionable conduct (facemask, etc) penalties would wipe out plays entirely.

I've just seen too many big plays called back by stupid penalties that took place WAY away from the play. Nobody wants to see a 50 yard catch and run called back because there was offensive holding on the entirely opposite side of the field. Not with the way our referees throw flags. It was just painful this year.

    Agree with this 100%.
