Game 73 : Melrose Avenue @ Melrose Coffee
kelownabomberfan replied to FrostyWinnipeg's topic in Winnipeg Jets Discussion
why not even sit him and let Roslo or Dano get some ice time? Let him heal up. These last 10 games are a luxury, use them to get everyone rested up. They are going to need it. -

Comrie has to play sometime. Too bad we're not playing Phoenix or Vancouver tonight. If there was anything actually on the line for the Jets tonight Helle would start. Glad we have the luxury to give him some rest at this time of the year instead of running him into the ground. -
I really liked the bait and switch they pulled on traditional NDP supporters with their promise to reform the electoral system. The NDP supporters totally got sucked in on that one. Justin never to my knowledge said that he would switch to the flawed PR system, just that he would reform the system. Then he totally pulled the whole thing off the table. Brilliant short-term strategy but will the traditional NDP support go back to the NDP? That's the question.

Looks like in 1982 they changed the playoff format to be inter-divisional rather than treated as just one big division. This cut down on travel costs, as you didn't have four rounds of potential bi-coastal series, but it also guaranteed seeing the same teams beat their brains out every year in the playoffs, until the finals. -

Here's the playoff seeding in 1980. Imagine if the NHL went back to this format....Winnipeg might play Pittsburgh in Round One. How screwy would that be... Playoff seeds[edit] The sixteen teams that qualified for the playoffs are ranked 1–16 based on regular season points. Philadelphia Flyers, Patrick Division champions, Clarence Campbell Conference regular season champions – 116 points Buffalo Sabres, Adams Division champions, Prince of Wales Conference regular season champions – 110 points Montreal Canadiens, Norris Division champions – 107 points Boston Bruins – 105 points New York Islanders – 91 points Minnesota North Stars – 88 points Chicago Black Hawks, Smythe Division champions – 87 points New York Rangers – 86 points Atlanta Flames – 83 points St. Louis Blues – 80 points Toronto Maple Leafs – 75 points Los Angeles Kings – 74 points Pittsburgh Penguins – 73 points (30 wins) Hartford Whalers – 73 points (27 wins) Vancouver Canucks – 70 points Edmonton Oilers – 69 points -

I have vague memories of such things. Number one would play sixteen, number two would play 15 and away we go. That got changed pretty early on though with the formations of the Smythe division etc. Which meant every year Winnipeg was screwed having to play Edmonton in round one or two. -

I would too. Jets should play Nashville in round three, not round two. Just means a weaker team gets to the third round. That got me a few years ago when the Habs had to take out Boston while the Rangers got a cake walk in round two against an injury-ravaged Pittsburgh team and then beat the Habs in Round 3 who were totally gassed after the Boston series. Didn't seem fair given the disparity in the standings, as the Rangers just walked into the finals. The Bruins and Canadiens should have met in Round 3 and slugged it out after killing off the weaker fish. -
and yet I don't recall the amount of $19 billion deficits being promised during the election...though you make a point, the brain-washed would have voted for him no matter what he said the deficit was going to be.
-
Yup, that's it in a nutshell. I also notice how when Harper won with only 39% of the popular vote, the lefties were screaming about how Harper wasn't their prime minister, and yet when Trudeau wins with the same percentage of the popular vote, that's totally cool. I will never understand this innate hypocrisy.
-
Great. That probably will solve a lot of problems here, as it appears you and I have an inability to communicate. Your comment about how this was going to be the last FPTP election really struck me as being horribly naïve, and then I remembered that was a comment from Prince Vapid during the election. Oh well, we all have to trust someone. Just don't trust the guy with the haircut and the smile, is all I'm saying.

Benn vs Buff - that'd be one for the ages. -
I still say that Justin is following in the steps of his dad. The comparatives to his old man are actually quite eerie. Win a big majority in 1968 (including taking Kelowna riding, something that didn't repeat itself until 2015), and then fast fall out of favour by the next election, but still squeak out a minority. I think JT will get a minority next election too, but we'll see. It depends on how much Jagmeet destroys the NDP. I just don't see Quebec continuing to vote NDP, and if they don't they aren't going to support Dimples McCheery (Scheer made a joke about that) so that leaves Trudeau. Quebec like Alberta tends to vote enmasse for one party, and I think that's going to be the Liberals.
-
no problem. I'm just curious - why did you trust the Liberals on election reform? It was pretty obvious they were never going to do it. Next time you want to trust a politician, just inbox me first and I'll set you straight.

It's always good to bet a dark horse in the playoffs. Load up on them while everyone is taking a third line guy on Tampa or Vegas. -

http://angusreid.org/federal-issues-march2018/ March 19, 2018 – The passage of time appears to have done nothing to soothe Canadian voters irritated with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau since his highly criticized passage to India last month. This, combined with a simmering unease among the electorate over the federal government’s deficit spending has, for the first time, driven Trudeau’s disapproval rating north of 50 per cent. All of this adds up to a ten-point gap between the Liberal and Conservative parties in vote intention. The latest polling analysis from the Angus Reid Institute shows that if an election were held tomorrow, the CPC – led by Andrew Scheer, would be in range to form a majority government. The bleed away from the Trudeau Liberals includes not just vote intention, but perception of leadership. On a number of key metrics, including those that have traditionally been strengths for the Prime Minister, Scheer is seen as a better bet. But with 18 months before an expected election, key areas of Liberal support remain solid. Millennials, many of whom turned out to the ballot box for the first time in 2015 principally because of Justin Trudeau, have not changed their minds about the leader – a majority (55%) still approve of him. And the party remains either in the lead or competitive in vote-rich urban centres, where a red surge pushed the Liberals to a 2015 majority.

I laughed at all the people that fell for that promise. No way the Liberals are going to abandon their best chance of maintaining a majority. When NDP supporters were telling me that they were voting for Trudeau I was just shaking my head at their gullibility. That being said, when I look at some of the ****-shows going on in countries like Italy that have proportional representation I am glad that we don't have it. There are already enough lunatics influencing our politics we don't need to elect even more crazy people. Here in BC we have three Green MLA's holding the entire province hostage for the crazy Green ideology, and that's not "democracy". I get this is a rare event under FPTP and hardly ever happens, but under prop rep this would be the norm, and that just sucks. Prop rep is not the way to go in my opinion.

Barry Melrose vs. Barry Melrose? Fun fact - I just dug out my old autographs and found my signed Barry Melrose picture. He came to speak at our hockey banquet in 1981. He had a broken jaw (I think?). -

I watched that Benn/Trouba hit and I don't think Trouba hit his head. It looked more like he just got smashed in the body. Not sure how that can be a concussion. -

Tanev is going to be important in the playoffs. My question is whether the Jets can handle the attrition of the playoffs. Everytime we get into one of these slug-fests with playoff-like intensity we seem to lose a D man or a forward. By game 12 will there be anyone left or will they be playing all Moose players? Jan Kostalek quarterbacking the power-play by round 3?
