2024/2025 CFL (non-Bomber) Off-Season Thread
Mike replied to WinnipegGordo's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I do really like Mitchell, to be honest. I think if we put him at X, he’s going to be a problem. -
I’m not discounting it, you’re putting way too much weight into it. Pretty much every talking point about it outside of Paul Friesen has been that it’s a non-starter to give any of these free agents more money.

Yeah, I’m not torn up about anyone other than maybe Lawler leaving. I’ll feel okay about that one if Wilson comes back or if we find another camp star. -
You can cling to this hope all you want that we are maybe going to bring back Kenny. I’m not wrong. You think teams are just waiting for this magical “exclusive window” to begin? “hold on, let’s hold our cap space hostage until the magic window opens” If Kenny or any other free agent (Metchie actually did this, it was reported) gave their old team an extended amount of time to try and make a contract work that matched what they were getting from a new team, that’s already happened. Walters isn’t waking up tomorrow to find a sack of cash under his pillow that he can suddenly use.
-
I fully grasp what the stated intention is. I’m telling you it doesn’t work like that. Go back and look at last year. Free agency week was the tampering week. You can pretend that this illusion of a negotiating window does something to the publicly agreed upon deals. It doesn’t. None of these players that have “agreed to terms” with new teams are taking these offers to their old teams. That includes Kenny.
-
We moved on before signing Sterns. We moved on the minute he agreed to terms with Hamilton.
-
I think we need to cut the illusion that there’s any kind of exclusive negotiating period. There’s like three agents that cover all these guys, *if* Winnipeg says hey Kenny we’re gonna offer you more, Hamilton would know right away and say ok Kenny, wait until free agency and WE can offer more too. There’s also just the ripple effect. If we offer Kenny more, does Schoen now say hey wait a minute here. Do we now have to cut Reggie or Sterns? Give them less of a fair shot in camp? That’s not good business either.
-
I don’t think this new money is affecting anything in the way we think it is You would’ve seen a report that SOMEONE was considering not signing the deal they agreed to, but you haven’t The agents don’t want to touch this one, the general managers aren’t going to either … and quite honestly, it makes sense. The CFL is a small league and if you use this money to screw over another team, it won’t be long before it comes back around

… do you think he’s running a football team or a safe haven for under appreciated athletes? what kind of ridiculous take is this -
To me, it really seems like the moves we are making scream “we are going to use the designated American rule this year” and I’m a fan of that
-
I don’t agree with any part of that, to be honest. Moore is absolutely cooked. Mayala has been an underperformer his entire career. Sterns has far more upside.
-
His statistics were actually surprising … better than I thought they’d be for sure. Did he get benched last year or injured? I remember his hands being pretty suspect in the couple games I watched
-
Another meh receiver
-
I don’t think ANYONE *should* take a pay cut, why would they?
-
I think it’s pretty fair to say our receivers are middle of the pack now Ottawa, Montreal, Hamilton clearly better BC probably right around the same, Saskatchewan (barf) could easily be better Better than Edmonton, Calgary or Toronto I’d say

I do agree that the receiver position seems very fluid. Almost more about opportunity than anything. Curious to see who the next batch of guys is that enters the league this season, hoping one of them is a Bomber -
Dunk said on the 3DN podcast that the general consensus around the league is that the fairest way to do this is just to give every single player across the league a raise and truthfully, I agree.
-
Sure, but let’s be realistic. Lawler doesn’t have to talk to us and I’d be surprised if he does. We can “match” all we want, he doesn’t have to do anything
-
This is just silly box score scouting. 275k doesn’t mean you should put up 1000 yards, 275k means you should be an impact player when you’re on the field and he is. You don’t win games in the stat sheet, you win them on the field and Lawler is a player that helps you win on the field.
-
I doubt this changes anything … if it did, I’m sure Dunk/Naylor/Farhan would’ve had some kind of comment from “sources” (front offices, agents) by now I’m still skeptical teams didn’t know until today. Seems incredibly difficult to believe, how could guys like Schoen or McManis not get super frustrated about that if it were the case?

I don’t get this logic at all. Like … it doesn’t even make a bit of sense. Even if you don’t think Dobson is a world beater (and I don’t either, I think he’s fairly average) he was still Canadian and better than anything we currently have on our roster and better than anything currently out there available to bring in. There’s no possible way to suggest our OL is currently better than it was two days ago. At all. You can think it will be better in time, you can think it will be better if we run an American out at guard instead and that’s all fair to suggest but it would’ve been just as fair if we had Dobson. And we don’t. That’s a loss as it stands today. -
Yeah, that Friesen tweet is ridiculous on so many levels. The optics of announcing it now for the CFL are truly bad though
-
Cap went up 400k, I would like to know when teams were made aware of this
-
Crazy how that comes up now, but you didn’t mention it at all in all of the discussions we’ve all been having (that you’ve been very active in) about OC options
