  1. Hi all,

I’ve noticed that there’s a vacuum in the podcast world—we don’t have a Blue Bombers podcast! Blue Bomber Talk is no longer as the Hodges have moved on. I’m interested in being part of a podcast. I’ve never done it but would love to get into it.  Is anyone else interested? I have also posted this on the other forum.
Here are some ideas but I think there could be way more

    1. have an X’s and O’s Section where a local fan or coach with football knowledge would break down the latest bomber game and look ahead to the next one

    2. interview local heroes like Carol Barrott or super fans like Reaper, Bomber Woman, Golden Boy etc

    3. Talk about best and worst Bombers memories

    4. Potentially get players or coaches on

    5. Betting suggestions

LMK if you want any help pulling video of specific plays for that post.  As a lifelong fan who's only ever played mens league flag ball, that Xs and Os stuff is fascinating to me too.  there's so much art and science in it that's impossible for me to understand at game speed, and the commentators are only rarely helpful.

I thought that Lapos' segments on the TSN panel where he broke down plays in detail were the best thing that TSN ever ran during halftime -- wish Jim Barker would do something like that, although Lapo strikes me as a better teacher.

this is why I don't have a lot of patience for the "Lapo always calls a five-yard pass play on 2nd and 10." thing that we'd hear here back in the day.  Lapo didn't have an xbox controller wired to Nichols' brain ... if Nichols was always checking down after going through his reads, either our receivers aren't getting open or Nichols is having trouble making his reads from the pocket.

Well said. Honestly gents there is a bombers podcast vacuum right now with the Hodges moving on. We should do one. Could talk X’s and O’s With our resident expert wbbfan and have some video with it. Would be fun!

This is a big thing too. People think harris has disappeared from the passing game. Hes just as good at catching it out of the back field as ever, and as open as usual but collaros is finding guys down field. Slowly teams will sag on him more and more in the pass game he will probably see a bit more passes and first downs rather than getting a 5 yard toss on 2nd and 10 and being swallowed up.

Id love to see them start sending harris on deeper routes. The old out n up, wheel stuff and even just 10-15 down field. What a nightmare for a wil to try and cover him.

Np, I love the Xs and Os and talking about football gameplans.

It certainly is more straight forward. Plop had a love for niche trick plays. The famous once a year darvin adams pass, or direct snaps to harris, throw backs etc. But most of what buck has taken out is very rarely used, (and still might be used) or low efficiency stuff. He's streamlined our offense, and I hope he is slowly adding to it.

Itll really be all about how he adapts. What we are doing right now is creating a lot of defensive shifts. We are opening a whole bunch of options that could take our offense to 2001/2002 levels. I worry buck isnt going to adapt but I hope he will. Ive been watching closely and after the game at the half way point, week 7, we have a bye so Ill probably make a tldr post about bucks offense in the first half.

Can you explain what you mean by defensive shifts? And 11 personnel. Also where did you learn so much about football?!

a lot of that Harris involvement was soley on Nichols, not Lapo. Nichols gave up on the progressions too soon and used Harris as a safety blanket, or didnt have the ability to extend the play t take a shot like Zack does...hence the lack of tosses to the running back's

The dump off to Harris is Zack's last resort....he's always looking downfield, or may just take off...I like this better as it will take a lot of the wear and tear of Harris as he won't be getting hit as much as he was...when he is mainly running he is inflicting the hits

good points, for sure--and i definitely prefer Zach's arm and ability/willingness to throw under pressure and into coverage. still, i find we could do more with the run game.

A run blitz is when you send extra defenders, generally linebackers into the back field, but instead of running in in pursuit of the qb they are fixated on the RB and more cautious and aware of angles. You might send a lber off the edge but in a contain rush. Very much the same as you might do to a qb whose primary skill is running. Its often mixed with twists where rushers switch the rush lane from the one they line up in, it helps disturb inside zone runs like ours.

Technically a blitz is when you send 1 more rusher than the offense has blockers, but its generally used for sending any rushers other than the DL. Sending pressure that is less than a blitz (like we frequently do with Bighill and our wils) is technically a stunt.

Toronto mixed run blitzes, twists, Gap cancellation (dl and lbers attacking the gaps rather than the OL infront of them) and edge contain very well. They also anchored and released. Engaging with the OL, but not trying to rush. Waiting for the rb to get close then rip away from the OL to make a tackle. Basically trying to hold your ground with the OL, not mash them or beat them.

    Pretty much tldr yes.

this is awesome info, thanks. i've always been interested in x's and o's but never played. loved your analysis of our offensive. to my untrained eye, buck's offence looks very vanilla, slow, predictable... whereas Lapo seemed to have much more pre-snap movement and ways to get AH in space.

what do you think is going on with Buck? do you think our offence will improve?

Our secondary really only got shredded last game.  The first two games they were exceptional. Even in the 2nd argos game, the argos racked up passing yards late when the defense had been on the field for twice as long as they shouldve. Or more. Up to the end of week 3 we were playing pretty tight coverage. Week 3 was also a ton of short drop timing routes where our front couldnt get consistent pressure.

Both our offense and defense have lacked meaningful progression. vs calgary our defense actually reverted to prime hall too deep zone for a while. Thats not the secondary getting shredded, thats our defensive play call being shredded. Our secondary was continually in position.

That sucks. Two of our best prospects at wr busted due to injuries. Hope he too can get healthy and try to come back.

Not so sure I agree. Hall was playing that d to give Maier the short stuff. Cgy only scored 16 pts. You should win every game in the cfl if your opposition scores under 20. If our receivers don’t drop three balls we would won by two scores.

100%. the 2 articles on 3dn about labatte retiring (he would be 37 and out of football for 2 years next, thats what this is) seem to have only the mildest concern for them replacing half their OL.  They dont even have a lot of league back up experience. Hardrick and couture probably have more combined cfl games then their entire roster of OL. I wouldnt be surprised if neuf and gray or desjarlais combined for more too. Or if bryant alone was close to matching their entire unit.

Fajardo has a big step to make going from a first year starter to succeeding consistently after other teams have a good amount of film on him in the cfl. 1 spin move and 1 pattern created a TON of their success last year. That has to grow exponentially to continue succeeding. That was their primary limiting factor before they lost half their OL.

At one point in time, Rick mirer was touted by no less than bill walsh as the next joe montana. He had a better rookie year than drew bledsoe, despite taking a TON more sacks. And in that rookie year he also had at most 5 passing plays, almost never checked down, and had a gigantic split for favored side of the field. In year 2 bledsoe smashed mirers production on an epic level as mirer was never able to adapt to more than he could execute in his first year. He became a huge draft bust with 26 more picks than tds and 20+ loses more than wins.

Fajardo has to over come what mirer didnt. And with out a stable OL.

Interesting comparison. Love the football history here.

brady receivers had the most drops this playoff season. need to fix that to win.

antonio brown will play  should help.

    chiefs lose left tackle.

bucs pass rush looked very good.

not sure the bucs o game plan is all that great, lot of bombs.

I think the Chiefs will win. too much O and a decent D.

time to atart  calling aaron rogers over rated. one superbowl win.  same as lots of guys that were just ok.

brady has won the superbowl without high end receivers.

I totally agree with you. And i think in order for the Bucs to win they have to do EVERYTHING perfectly (pass rush, score at will, no turnovers, special teams, limit chunk plays from Mahomes)--as opposed to the Chiefs who are so dominant that even if Mahomes throws a pick 6 or they have 2 turnovers, the can still win. All it takes is a couple of possessions on their part where things click and game over.

That was actually my initial thought watching the game. There was very little contact to the head, but the defenders arm hit the side of Mahomes neck very hard and wrapped around as they went down. Isnt' there a vein in the neck that even a slight blocking can cause you to go unconscious?

My only question is why wouldn't he have come back after that?

according to Glazer he didn't come back bc spotters/trainers thought it was a concussion at the time as he appeared to knock his head and was very wobbly. he was apparently vociferously arguing to get back in. as for the vein i think it's the jugular. so i think spotters/trainers were maybe overreacting to how he presented immediately after the hit; i suspect if they had known he had basically been choked out and not concussed, they would've let him back in. caveat: i'm not a doctor so maybe when you get choked out you appear to have symptoms more similar to concussion...

I do as well. Winning 11 Championships is a big deal. We brought the Tiger Cats to their knees. It was an old fashioned **** kicking. Brandon Banks was shut down by the middle of the third quarter. They lost their most explosive player to injury but truth be told he quit before he got hurt when he told Steinhauer to stop giving him the ball. He was scared. Their qb Dane Evans was so far out of his mind from being hit every play that he was useless to them in the 2nd half.

Remember how the Tiger Cats acted at the CFL Awards banquet the Thursday before the game? Man, they thought all they had to do was show up & the Bombers would just lie down & they'd just take the championship that they felt belonged to them back to Steel Town. I think they just fired up the Bombers even more being disrespected like that.

Interesting about Banks not wanting the ball. I’ve never heard that. Where did you hear that?

  11. I have to agree with Noeller here. This means nothing. Just PR. I was expecting something from Randy other than hope and prayer about a fkn vaccine. Give us a scenario where we can play no matter what. No bums in seats BS. We have no control over that.

If that is honestly true, then (and I will try to say this as nicely and respectfully as possible) you need to get a f***ing life, or at least a f***ing clue.

Give the guy a break. He just really misses CFL, as do I.

Lirim didn't say anything. That was the problem. He refused to talk to the media so he left the stadium as soon as the game was over & O'Shea covered for him.  That was the last game that he played as a Bomber as he was replaced for the remainder of the 2015 season by Sergio Castillo & then signed as a FA with Hamilton. Hard lesson learned for a young player at the time. I'm sure he'd handle a bad game like he had that day a lot differently now.  Nothing like going thru a bad time time to be a good teacher of experience.

I'll dig up the replay if I can. Printers had a crazy good MOP season in 2004 with BC and managed himself an NFL shot a couple years later... famously ended with the (I'm paraphrasing) 'you want me to make chicken salad but all you give me is chicken ****' line on Hard Knocks. Came back to Hamilton as the highest paid player in the league. Proceeded to stink it up and whine about it while facing much scrutiny. Limps his way back over to BC's practice roster... bides his time, Lulay gets injured... he becomes the starter... back at the top of the roster where he showed so much promise... and he chucks a pick six in the redzone OT, screams at his receiver, gets cut days later. Ended his CFL career then... he did become a backup for a season in the IFL according to the googles.

Wow, sounds like quite the drama. Thanks for explaining.
