Our offensive play call since then is night and day. I was pretty worried about buck early on. The last month ish has been very good.

Yeah It could favor his skill set more. He isn't breaking a bubble screen for a big gain.

what have you noticed in terms of the differences between Buck's call early on and now?

haha not exactly. A 1 gap player lines up in a gap between two blockers and rushes the gap. More modern defenses try to use 1.5 gap defenders, where they rush 1 gap and have to watch the other then shed the block and make a tackle in another gap. Its hard to find good 1.5 gap defenders and they are worth their weight in gold in the NFL, especially if they can get after the qb a bit. Finally you have the 2 gap defensive tackle. The 2 gap player lines up in 0 technique, at nose tackle directly over the center. His responsibility is to flow to either guard-center A gap and stuff the run. Some times this is done by discipline, anchor your position then disengaging from the C and scraping to the ball carrier in the gap. Other times this is done by mashing the center back and removing the A gaps entirely. The later happens when an OL is playing a tight blocking scheme, especially in man blocking.

Or tossed suhk, then ripped the center down and filled the gap between michael reillys ears with his heft.

WBB Fan, I gotta get you on the Pod one of these days. I love your football analysis and want to learn more! What do you think?

Maybe its a personal issue? Idk strange. Perez has been here a long time. Nice to have a back up DB. Maura looked like a beast though.

Tbh I wouldnt take any db out for johnson. He'd be nice as a DI for an extra db but this D is certainly the best we could field other then mercy maston. If he and johnson were healthy right now I think johnson would be cut.

Hallett would be great to have back for depth and teams too.

    100%.

I wonder if Shiaffinio Perez is coming in simply bc we’ll need extra db help vs lb help (Maruo) due to Lions’ strength at passing attack vs negligible run game?

Like it or not, a new generation of fans is growing up loving that NFL model and convinced that the CFL is a boring game. And just highlighting a CFL game with no bells and whistles is not going to draw in new young fans.

good point. tho i listen to ppl like bill burr, who is v popular. all he does is yak about his day and ppl eat it up. i think in this time of salesmanship and overstimulation, ppl are craving just some normal chatter. ?

TSN would own the rights to the game both on TV and radio, as it has been for a long time. Local broadcasters do not get to broadcast that game. And they would have no say on their personnel being included or excluded on a broadcast crew. So unless something drastic changed in the standard operating procedure in 2019, Bauming’s lack of access to the sidelines would have had zero to do with a Bomber boycott and would simply be TSN employing their own crew. Besides, If CJOB had any pull to insert a member of their crew, Bob Irving certainly would have been plugged in as play-by-play voice.

fair but Bauming, at least back then, was a TSN employee.

Do you know that for 100% fact? ....Because that's one hell of an accusation.....

I base it solely on listening to the post-game CFL radio Grey Cup podcast. It's available through the apple podcast app, if you search BC Lions. It's a fantastic podcast by itself, but there's a brief bit where the host, i think it's Dave Jameison, subtly criticizes the WBB for being petty re Darrin Bauming. Have a listen.

There is something about Darren's delivery. I am not a fan. Also, it always feels as though he's trying to sell me something. I like him and think he provides good insight but I do not care for his delivery.

Gotcha. The Blue certainly ostracized him for Grey Cup based on him not voting 33 for team and league awards. That’s why Rick Ralph was the sideline reporter for the radio broadcast.

  11. I wonder if Couture is being replaced by Eli because of the two costly holding calls in the LDC. One made us go two and out late in the third quarter deep in our own end after Harris gained half the first down yardage. Maybe he can't handle the Sask front 7?

Cool Id appreciate the help ill hit you up about that after the game thanks!

Yeah his segment was exactly what the modern young fans want to see. Now we've got some old dog barking cliches  from the kids table its sad. The people in charge of CFL on TSN need to watch some NFL games, especially with romo calling. Football isnt hockey and you cant present it the same way. Its not a frenetic back n forth that you add quips to. Its a constant strategic battle.

Hes like kevin fogg when he was here. Either getting burned or making turn overs. And he was only a turn over magnet for 1 year.

I think pederson is probably the most prevalent podcast right now,  bonfiresports is good too when bauming has time. I wish he'd dedicate more time to  it.

Defensive shifts are adjustments in alignment defenses make to cover up gaps, seams, stack the box etc. A lot of what we see right now against our offense is D's moving their DL into the gaps and ends over the offensive tackles, And bringing their saftey and defensive half backs up closer to the tackle box.

When we play teams that dont run a lot or in passing downs our D is generally a 5 or 6 man box. 6 is the normal in the cfl. (depending how close the inside slot covered by the sam is playing)

We mostly see 8 men in the box. And frequently, especially the riders last week, teams put their DHbs just out side the tackle box. (the tackle box is the linebackers area, from offensive tackle to tackle and back to Lbers depth) This crowding the middle of the field opens up play action, deep routes, the screen game and deeper out routes.

11 personnel is football formation terminology.  It indicates 1 running back and 1 blocker at the TE spot. We usually have woli, miller or eli as our TE depending on if we substitute a heavy package in, or if its in the regular flow of our offense. The first number indicates the backs and the 2nd the number of extra blockers on the line. So 21 is 2 back 1 te. 12 1 back 2 tes etc.

I played at a moderate junior level, but was a bust due to injuries on and off the field. So for the better part of 2 years I worked with the coaching staff and ended up switching to coaching. At first tracking plays, then coaching rbs, and OC'd in HS a bit. I ended up moving and worked with a us football scout for a bit, and while I did that I took the opportunity to attend a few major us coaching seminars. I ended up not having time to be involved in football for a hand full of years but still follow and use a bunch of football coaching tools. The evolution and strategy of the game have always fascinated me.

Better watch out, the riders have the blueprint to beat us now. 😆

The betting line in the cfl is always skewed. Those melon heads always thing they are the *&^% and bet on the riders no matter what. Just a reason to enjoy the soft betting lines when ever the riders are bad or on the fringe.

wow thanks for the analysis. makes total sense. I wonder Toronto just run blitzed us all game to take Oliveira out of it. Made us one dimensional.

  12. Totally agree about Brown. I also enjoy the pre-game on CJOB immensely, as well as Bauming's stuff as Walby is a legend and I appreciate that Bauming is bringing more attention to the Bombers.

I do really miss a weekly fan podcast though. We need more voices talking about the Bombers. Especially now that they are the class of the CFL! Wbbfan you can cohost and do some analysis!
