This is why we have courts.  This is about the law.  If we let citizens pass sentence, then we'd be back to witch trials and lynch mobs.  Sometimes a government should be given credit for doing the politically harmful thing because it is the just thing to do.

    1) How is Khadr not a Child Soldier?
    2) How is Khadr not a Canadian?
Child Soldiers and The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms are not mere "affectations" (click on links and educate yourself a bit)

Mark H's link to the article above:
"The press has not simply questioned the wisdom of the apology and settlement—it has ignored or obscured the relevant facts that made an apology and settlement necessary in the first place."
This is key to understanding why the money and apology are appropriate. (The way it was carried out- total garbage). This whole debacle is much more nuanced than what the media is reporting these days.

If you don't understand the notion of child soldier, then reality is lost on you.
If you don't believe that the charter of rights extends to EVERY Canadian, then yeah,  reality is lost on you.

Yeah, he must have been what... 13 maybe 14 in that pic- If you don't understand the notion of child soldier, then that piece is lost on you. If you don't believe that the charter of rights extends to EVERY Canadian, then yeah, that piece is lost on you.
I don't even think you read that article. So keep your snark to yourself.

This an excellent piece- those who are all up in arms about PAYING MILLIONS TO A TERRORIST should give it a good read.
People forget often that the military Tribunal and legal framework that Khadr was subjected to was experimental and pretty much a sham.

That has to be the most offensive thing I have read here ever.
Do you have any idea what a person with a disability receives from the government? For a single person, Provincial benefits are under $1,000 per month plus some additional coverage for meds, medical equipment, etc. while Federal CPP Disability is under $800 per month with no additional benefits. Disabled people make up a disproportionate percentage of those living in poverty.

What part of a unanimous ruling by the SCoC are you not understanding? That ruling is why he received the payout.
And way to make childish assumptions. Who's "you guys," anyway? I'm shocked you didn't label me a SJW again, albeit erroneously.

You keep claiming there is no proof of torture yet Canadian officials acknowledged there was torture and it was specifically referenced by the Supreme Court of Canada. It's also well known that the Bush government condoned torture at US detention centres.

What was the alternative? Fight him in court and drag it out longer for much more than the payout was...?
The SCoC determined unanimously several years ago that his human rights were violated. That's why the current gov't chose to pay him compensation and apologize, which is basically closure at this point. The same way the previous gov't paid compensation and apologized to Arar for his having being mistreated/mishandled by government officials.
The optics of this whole debacle are ugly as hell, even without those feeling compelled to politicize it for their own interests.

There are pages of discussion on this topic in the Random News Thread - no need for a new  thread.
    1) The Government was being sued for $20M and negotiated a settlement because there was no way they could win a civil suit that had Supreme Court decisions in the plaintiff's favour.
    2) There is very little chance any of the settlement proceeds would have gone to the widow :
    3) Khadr is appealing his conviction and given how many other convictions stemming from Gitmo have been overturned it is pretty likely his will be too.

The Supreme Court made the decision and awarded the money, not the PM.

    1) Next time the Government should do what they are supposed to do for Canadian citizens held by other governments.
    2) There are a number of US soldiers who were there that have said they don't know if he threw the grenade and that it could have been someone else.
    3) If you had been held at Gitmo for 10 years and the only way to get out was to plead guilty, would you do that?

A lot. This guy still isn't getting the respect he deserves, and I'm not even talking here. TSN, Sportsnet, the papers, Nichols in general seems to still have the game manager tag on him. I have to think some of it comes from our play calling and how stupidly conservative we can get, and that's understandable I guess if your a fan of another team and just catch a quarter or two. But for full time analysts and our own fans, this guy isn't Matt Dunigan but he sure as hell isn't Garza or Dinwiddie.

Nichols finished last night with a QB rating of over 120, 4 touchdowns, 300+ yards, and 64% throwing. Yet you would think that he needs to elevate his game if you read some of the posts from the game thread. So yeah, I'm going to make a Matt Nichols bandwagon because after watching a long line of terrible quarterbacks (including the anointed Drew Willy) I like winners. And Nichols is a god damn winner.

Senate Republican health care plan is out. It makes deep cuts to Medicaid.
Nearly half of newborn deliveries in the USA are funded by Medicaid.
What the **** does "pro-life" even mean to these people?
The Congressional plan cut almost $900B in government health spending over the next decade.  Strangely, it only reduced the deficit by $100B. Where is the other $800B going?
