  1. Middle of July and 1290 is almost all Jets in the morning. That's inexcusable. Bombers get less time than hockey in the middle of summer, when there's nothing to talk about. I wrote them about it and Westwood blew it off as unimportant because "most people care about the Jets." He's preachy and uninteresting.

If 1290 had gotten the Bombers games, I guarantee they would have had to move them online those few times a year when there's a conflict with the Jets. And then what?

The Bombers will always be second class citizens on 1290.  While Hustler has historically done a better job of covering the CFL than the morning show, Bauming is the only real exception, and I can listen to him on a podcast, so why even bother with the radio station?

If 680 could get Bauming in with Irving for Bombers games, it would be perfect. Let him learn from Irving and grow his skills while honing his passion.

  2. I used to be annoyed at the "First Down" chant, but now I just tune it out.  I'm loud when I'm supposed to be, but I like the principle of getting people involved in the game somehow.

I'm on record with my opinion of shouting anything during the anthem.  sing like a normal person or be quiet.  I don't think it's unpatriotic or disrespectful per se, but I think there's something different about an anthem than just a song you like.

I sort of wish we had some music we could sing along to - a "fight" song. Or, at Packers games they play this fun little tune and everyone yells "Go Pack Go!" except me because I've never heard this music before. And they all seem to know when they hear it - I only caught on by the time we were on to "Pack Go!"

I will count my eternal stars that we do not have to pipe in a voice saying, "Flardablee! Make some Noiiiiiiiiiise" like the Als (I might have taken liberties with the first part). Whoever is in charge of pushing the button that makes that sound should have his fingers broken.

How those guys don't get sick and tired of hockey / Jets talk is beyond me.

I wrote Westwood an email about it once. He told me most people want to hear about the Jets, not anything else.

I replied back asking how people would ever know whether they want to hear more about the Bombers since they never have the chance in the first place.

I don't listen to 1290 anymore. I listen to podcasts to hear about the cfl. It's far superior.

  4. I'm trying to get to all the CFL stadiums in the next few years (and now I have to go back to Regina, which pisses me off because, well, it's Regina), and so I managed to get to this game.  I chose them as my "2nd favourite team" since they haven't been in the league for long enough that they haven't spoiled anything for the Bombers - I used to live in Ottawa, so that helped.

TD Place is a nice stadium, for a retrofit. I was up in the nosebleed section and paid more than I think a person should.  The crowd was good - they were into it when they should've been.  I'd say IGF on a quiet night is still way louder than TD Place was, even if we had the same number of people.

The fans were cool, but most of the people around me hate Matt Dunigan, though I don't know why.  He gave my dad and I a thumbs up when he saw us rocking out Bomber stuff.

You know how we have the announcer say, "That's another Winnipeg..." and we all yell, "First Down!" - their dude does this thing where he says, "1st Down..." and then there's an echo-y sound effect as he says, "Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrredblacks!"  It was a little annoying, but I say the same thing about the way the Bombers do it. They also do all the game calls in english and french. That amused me.  OH! But they don't say the names of the Alouettes who made a catch, just who made the tackle.

Tom Green was there. I thought he was dead. His career is, certainly.  Also, I will never again complain about the games they play at IGF with fans. The on-field hosts and games were painful. Painful.

RedBlacks offense didn't seem to want to win the game. The defense showed up to play. Good to see.

The officiating was brutal. Usually I'll give the officials the benefit of the doubt and stuff, but holy hannah, that was a tough one for the boys in stripes.

The bugs were insane way up there, too. The lights were right above us, and I felt like I was slathered in... whatever random bugs eat.

They have just one giant scoreboard. It's big. It doesn't show a lot of replays, but also has no ads on it. I'm not sure which I prefer.

I was glad to have been. It was nice that the RedBlacks won, too.

ETA: I totally forgot!!  They allow flags and flagpoles and whatnot!  Not a single person got murdered, either. I miss flags on golf ball retrievers...

  5. I doubt he'll even get to Preseason. He's going to get confused by the waggle or lose track of the extra DB. Either way, it'll be Keven Glenn starting for the Riders.  Heck, whether it's Young or Glenn, neither of them will be able to through the wide-side out, so...

Or, that wacky little fire hydrant of a HC/GM/DC/LMNOP is going to go with Young just to prove he's right and we can all be treated to another dumpster fire out west... which will make none of us sad.

  6. I said to a friend who is a huge Falcons fan: If they're playing anyone else in the league aside from Brady and Belichek, the Falcons win that game. I don't know what dark ritual Belichek performs every year, but the Old Gods love that man with a slavering sort of obedience Faust would envy.

I'm not a huge NFL fan (love me the Packers, but after that, I'm pretty meh), but this was the best superbowl I've ever seen. I don't like their OT format, but it is what it is.  Seeing Brady win his 5th ring is something I'm glad to have witnessed.

Early in the game after a field goal, an end zone fan caught the ball. A worker on the field motioned to him and he threw it back and I said to buddy, do they have to throw the ball back? I would think of it ends up in the stands, it's the fans' ball...

I've heard conflicting things about that.  Some have said yes, some have said no.  I don't see anything in the Fan Code of Conduct on the website.

I'd just hang on to it, since I can always use a new football. :P

Westerman tweeted that they  had to jump through some hoops to get the ball, complete with an eye roll emoji

Sounds like the fan really took it to them.

I wondered idly what I'd want in exchange for the ball, if it were me.  I'd probably just say, "Whatever you feel it's worth, I guess," and move on.  Maybe something autographed by the team?  Heck, I'd probably be good with just a visit to the locker room.  I still haven't seen it.

If Jones can behave thus after a hard-fought game, imagine how he treats the players he thinks are making him look bad.

#ThrowbackSunday to when Jones admonished Dickenson to "win with class," as though Jones wasn't basically like school on Saturday...

I suppose, to be fair, he didn't tell anyone to lose with class, so he's... not a hypocrite?

If Jones dumps Durant, as stupid as that might be, it will signal to the Rider fans that he has officially descended into dementia.

One of my most level-headed best friends is a Riderfan (we all have flaws we overlook in our friends) and he said, "If Jones dumps Durant, even to not extend him, I'm going to drive to Regina and poop on his lawn myself."

I doubt he'd be the only one.  And there's a whole fanbase who has easy access to manure and manurespreaders.

Not sure how close Bob is to retirement but if TSN 1290 gets the Bombers broadcasts, I'd sure love them to make him an offer he cant refuse to make the jump too.

I've said the same thing. No disrespect to anyone at 1290, but replacing Bob Irving without giving him the chance to decline would be silly.

My pitch would go something like this, "Just call the game, Mr. Irving. Here's a truck full of money."

  12. I remain baffled that there is anyone who can justify or rationalise the Mitchell signing.  And yet, there they are, talking about how he'll bring a sort of
nasty to the d-line that it sorely needs. I'm pretty libertarian about most things, and I'll rarely be among the first 10,000 people to be offended by anything, but golly this is a bad move.

The only thing I can think of is that they've signed this dude to try to distract from the rest of the horrible events of the season - like fighting a fire by starting another fire or something.  "Hey, did y'all see that we signed this anti-semitic, conspiracy theorist racist? And y'all are still talking about salary cap issues?"

  13. I'm ambivalent towards Orridge, I guess.  I like the good stuff he's done - much of it overdue - and don't like that there's some stuff he hasn't done right.

Mike does a good job of listing the stuff I liked that he's done, so I won't rehash that.

I would like to see him have a greater presence at games, being seen in attendance, etc.  I would also like to see him more directly address the rule changes and the laughable degree to which plays can be challenged; perhaps I only mean I hope he'll do whatever he can, as I'm not even sure to what extent that's in his job description.

I don't care about the Riders' woes.  Not one whit.  I'd like to see an increased presence in Toronto and BC, but that's not something one person can just do.

What did that dbag have to say?  I never listen to 1290.

Oh, the boys wound him up and he was off like a dervish. He was ranting and raving about Orridge (said his nickname across the league was "the Ghost"), and called Lawless a name or something.  It was difficult to keep track, as I'm only conversant in RiderFanboy from 3 years in Sask when I was young.

The guys on 1290 goaded him into it, for sure.  They asked a simple question like, "What's going on in Saskatchewan with all the fines and stuff," and it turned into a diatribe about conspiracies and Orridge and so forth.  You could sort of tell the 1290 guys were doing it on purpose.
