Ott has always been a tough match for us for whatever reason, and Dinwiddie has always been an even bigger challenge. This extremely injury-weakened BC team is much worse than the Ott team we faced last week. Also, getting dog-walked at home like that, then having a short turnaround and a home game before a bye is a very large boost. It's one of the few cases where a short week isn't a weakness, imo. 2 games in 6 days without travel is better than 2 games in 7 days with travel. Even better than 8 days with 2 road games back to back, too. It's not coaching or rah-rah type stuff. It's more a personal level of motivation, for lack of a better word. Incentive? Maybe.

This is the biggest gift of a free spot on the bingo card we’ve seen in ages. I can not imagine how we create a loss out of this game. even a close game would be a shock.

raw Talent it self is almost never the issue. Elsbury has no gap in talent behind any C in this league. Vaval is one of the most talented guys in the league but doesnt have a fit on D or O. With great coaching though, even adequate really, you make use of what you have. And bring out the best in your players. Almost no one is playing there best ball or even close to it. That isn’t a player issue, that’s coaching. We cut guys who other teams use. And often use better then us, despite us having had them in the room for a lot longer time. player quality is an issue at some spots, mainly because our roster is clogged with dead weight. One of the realities of scouting is the miss rate is high, and un predictable. Because of this you have to flood positions with new guys in order to find the ones worth developing. who will grow with coaching and reps. I think reese is one of those guys, but look at the volume of talented pass rushers it took to find him. The few guys with a real talent disparity are ones like korny who is at best a fringe player. Another major factor in recruiting, is you have to know the fit for your need. like we don’t need a speedy catch and run 5’8 170 lbs wr right now, if that’s all bring in you see screwed. And as brady said, the players don’t even know what the Os concept is supposed to be. This late in the season to not know at that level, you can imagine the position the scouts were in during the months leading up to training camp. Now, i’m not excusing walters or the scouts. I do agree we haven’t down a good job of bringing in guys who jump off the page. But when the systems on O and D are as flawed as they are, and you have log jams filling a good portion of the roster with old guys who can’t play but won’t lose spots, you also can’t fairly evaluate the job done by the front office. I’ve said it before, bad teams cut good players for the wrong reasons. And they cling to bad players for bad reasons too. Good and great teams find value in those cuts. Until we fix our systems, we will continue to fail at identifying using and developing players. We are a bad team, no matter the record or areas of success. We have no plan to create a win condition, and we have no tactics or execution to achieve those win conditions. On O or D. We are just fumbling through throwing random crap at the wall and hoping it will work. Our wins haven’t been created by us, they have happened to us. Same as unforced turn overs vs forced turn overs. The good news is that most teams in the league right now, are also bad. And frankly, atleast 3 are much farther from being good than us. Film study at this point is redundant. Both in the season and in the tenure of our systems/coaches. The fix, can be done with out film study. You could after today’s game, no matter it’s out come, begin installing changes that would drastically improve our team. We all know those changes, at this point. The mafia may not admit it, but they know it too. I look at how people are viewing our pass pro around the league. Talking about not having the time needed, but no one says big stan’s name. No one wants to besmirch his legendary career. Be it cjob, pregame with walby, the freep, 3dn, cfl.ca or tsn, no one is willing to say what is clear to be seen by even the most casual fan. He is brutal now. Hes getting almost 2 penalties a game, and getting destroyed with giving up pressures. He’s beaten with speed, power, technique, motor, every thing. Last year, you could beat him with speed, And some moves. But not with power, and not with motor. Not with any competent pass rush move. Now, he’s a free path to the back field. He’s not a turnstile, he’s a screen door from a trailer in a hurricane. No one from out side the team wants to say it, so they watch in relative silence. Waiting for the team to do, what any other team would’ve done long ago.

wow that’s brutal. basically done til the start of next years football season. even if recovery goes well, to get back into shape and get sharp it’ll be far too late yup. If he did, i’d offer him a deal up here and put him right on the 6 game for the year. pay him to recover, get him in the room and working with marty even just in terms of coaching our system and film etc. Let him go between recovering at home if he wants and spending a few weeks here at a time for the medical team, resources and coaching. I’m sure that won’t happen on either end, but i’d do it.

He did. We should've flipped rando and vanterpool back then. But he did seem to take a big step forward last year. Taking a rookie imp in his first action and flipping him from G to LT is crazy work.

He needs to be great. Like, really great. He needs to come out and pants the guys in front of him. He's gotten kind of a knock for being soft off how long the injury lingered last year. Right when he needed to step up last year too, and got a chance. But an early non-football injury could be a pulled hammy from working out or something pretty minor. If he falls off early due to injury I think the chances he gets picked up by another team will go up too .

If you look around at Ds throughout the rest of the league, none are great. But I don't know if I'd say any are even good. The Elk and the Riders have been the best in the league. But outside of a different outlier bad performer in each defensive standing league-wide, the rest are actually very close. Especially when you look at it per game played. Our D gives up among the fewest yards per play on first, 2nd fewest passing yards again, one of the lowest completion %s, middle of the pack in YPC while one of the most run against Ds in the league, 2nd down conversion rate is in the few best, most sacks, most PKDs, 2nd most TFL, while opposing offences enjoy the best starting field position in the league. Despite all that, our D is pretty bad. The best Defence against CFL offences is the IR. That's the only thing slowing down scoring. To actually answer the question, the drop-back heavy match zone that Toronto ran back then is the backbone of what teams run now. Fronts and pressure packages are far more modular than back then, when the Argos ran a pretty strict 3-4, and SAM hasn't been an actual Lber spot for ages. So yes, it still works. Almost 2 years ago now, JY switched us to a mainly 30 front dime pack heavy D dropping every one back constantly. And that was our best D since then, and by far the most Argo like D the league has seen. You know, they made him sit longer than he wanted when he fainted a couple of years ago. And they made Paddy sit when he was too injured to produce. I shouldn't take hope that it will happen again, especially since we cut/sat better Ts and played Stan so long. But it feels like maybe the worm is turning here. Mos is taking the ball to start the last few games in a row instead of deferring could be a big deal.

Yep, you need to tackle well, gang tackle, and make guys pay a toll to catch the ball underneath the zone. If you don't do that, you are at best playing speed bump.

We are always in that soft match zone, bend but don't break philosophy. Be it with JY or Hall. And frankly, most of the league uses that as their base or primary sub pack. But what we have done extensively this year, with 2 Ss (ususally limited canadians) and running them shallow, is more similar to some of what Stubler used to run. Its kind of 46 bear like, but with soft zone and soft players all over.

If we go back to using Woodbey as the nickel sub and not a second Canadian S that will help a lot. Playing a greenhorn QB should also help, but the lack of larger changes is concerning. Vanterpool suddenly being ready is a bit questionable too. If he's been game-ready for a week or two, they really should've sat Bryant. I know they don't want to do that, but he is just brutal. If they put him back out there in a couple weeks I will lose the rest of the hope I have for the short term. Vanterpool played soo well in limited reps at G last year, and is very well suited to RT.

I mean in the nfl heinz ward. In the cfl, wrs don’t often make a million bucks but demski and bailey made their bones with blocking and play away from the play. Ever team where blocking is expected and ingrained, gets blocking from wrs. the huge majority of ncaa and nfl teams running modern flex offences have their wrs blocking their asses off. We developed that in bailey and demski from desire and even more we developed that in schoen, who might’ve been the most coachable rookie in a generation. yeah and brady was being a great leader and teammate putting the shine on a very slight build wr doing some thing positive down field in the run game. which is great. And as i mentioned i don’t expect wilson to floor dbs like bailey and schoen did. My point is just that the mafia have lowered the bar to a pitiful level. Also, wrs who block their butt off, get a lot more yac, and come up with the ball more often. It’s one of those under rated basic tools that projects all over the wr job, once a guy does it well. It plays up huge for winning the physical and mental battle vs dbs especially late in games and seasons.

watch the replay above, he didn’t block his ass off, he just managed to get back in the way and give brady a cut back angle. Brady was surrounded by 4 defenders, it wasn’t some bunch of down field blocking by wrs lol

But keep in mind, when Condell and Zach were in hamilton together, that lead to the worst stretch of zachs career by a long shot, and TC getting canned.

What would be better from WR? Today's White, Wilson, and Nield, or 24/25 Schoen(stays healthy but not the same guy as before), Peak Sheed, and Peak Woli? Wilson and Nield are young with a lot of good ball ahead of them. But Id take schoen, sheed and woli. 3 guys who will block their asses off, catch, run with physicality and who know how to play Wr at a professional level without hand-holding. They might get a bit less yards, but I think they'd make an offence much, much better.

Yes, Wilson's cross face on the tackler bought Brady enough time to cut back and push in the final couple of yards. Which likely would've been down maybe at the 4 or 5 otherwise. But that was after going untouched for 30 yards. Wilson did the very least of what he should do, allowing Brady to score. If he had gotten a decent block in the first place brady doesn't need to cut back, though. The OL gets 80% of the credit, Brady gets 18%, and Wilson gets 2%. Brady was a good teammate on that, and Wilson did enough. He's never going to be a guy who blows up a tackler with a block and cruises onto another target. But 1on1 blocking a DB doesn't require anything more than effort. If Wilson gave the smallest amount less on that play, he wouldn't accomplish anything. The minimum expectation for WR blocking downfield here used to be soooo much higher. Frankly, you can trade off the blocking like that, but it's gotta come with all the things we don't get from our WRs today. Great catching, yac/downfield threats, extreme consistency, or explosivity. We've traded it off for nothing. That is far from all on Wilson. And while Wilson has had a pretty rough go of late at every thing wr, its largely because he isn't a wr1 but having to fill that role.

I think it's a combination of things with the WRs. We don't coach the minutiae remotely as well as we used to. Even the basics. But we also changed drastically the type of WR we recruit. You look at the guys previously; we recruited good size 6'1-6'3, 205+ lbs, with marginal speed (4.6-4.7 40), but who made their bones winning 1on1 physically. You look at the WRs we won cups with; Lawler was the spry guy. But he's extremely strong in his upper body and all about winning the 1on1s. After that, Demski is the shortest guy at 5'11, and everyone is over 205. Look at our WR core now, including the PR; we have 4 guys in the 170lbs range and 6 guys who are 6' or less. Corcoran, Clercius, and Nield are the only guys 6'+ and 200+. That's with Clercius just getting back into the lineup, and Corcoran existing as a blocker/pylon in the pass game. This isn't just a few outliers either; we hammered the bigger, stronger type WRs back in the ships. Camp was filled with that prototype. We were pretty desperate for speed at wr back then, but now we are looking at nothing else. We did much the same at OL, went from looking for the guys with aggression and physicality, undersized but who could be optimized, to looking for giants who run and jump like NBA players but who lack the power and grit to excel. On the DL, we stopped looking for big, athletic, nasty DTs who could play outside some and disrupt a lot from up the middle. Even in the secondary, we have gotten away from what brought us success. Partly due to injury, but Griffin is our only big physical outlier. Woodbey and Allen will bring more of that when healthy, but that's still a far cry from how our secondary used to break WRs will to compete with physicality. The secondary has locked in on vets, and been forced to play young guys due to injuries. When at our best, the young DBs each year pushed the level of play higher and took jobs.

Then chalks up the offence's issues to ball security, which he says he can fix in practice. I haven't seen a great block from a WR on a run play all year. I've seen a lot of low focus, low effort downfield, though. The OL get nasty when they manage to get downfield, but not most of the WRs. Corcoran is solid blocking; Demski, as always, that's about it. I mean, Wilson and White are two of the lightest starters in the league, but neither has the grit that Dressler and the like had. The WRs get downfield and, at best, look to get in the way of tacklers. Ball security has been an issue, but it's far from the primary issue. Catching has been as much an issue as ball security, maybe more. Not to mention the fact that we consistently layer routes over each other in the same area, short of the first down marker, seem to have no red zone play call, half the time don't have a check down, don't have passing concepts set up to get the ball deep, not to mention constantly underusing and poorly using Brady. He takes more snaps out at WR than he gets carries, despite the fact that we are on track to cut his average receiving yardage to less than half his average over the past 3 years. His response isn't as toxic and tone deaf as Hogan's was last year, but it is pretty poor for a guy clearly trying to be more political in response than anything. If Brown et al don't carry him hard and quickly, the offence is gonna be getting booed off the field on a regular basis.

I mean, Demski has been the only reliable WR for us catching the ball. After that, Wilson has been by far the least reliable. He had more drops in 1 game then any one else has this season. For catch security, I'd put Nield handily above White. White has benefited a lot from screen passes and easy catches, whereas Nield's catches have come consistently in the first-down range downfield. Nield isn't being used well at that. He's basically getting the looks that we previously used with Woli and Clercius despite playing in the slot. Nield isn't actually a big physical WR, he just looks like it next to our motley crue of mini WRs. Clercius and Demski are really the only ones capable of running violently and punishing defenders a little on breaking tackles. This is why Daniels is such a waste. 6'6 270, and plays no power. He should be on the PR; I'd have Nield serve as the backup, and use MCI out of the TE spot we've been using Daniels. He still isn't polished enough to run with anywhere near his power potential, but he can at least push forward when tackled and brings speed. Not to mention upside. MCI needs to be used to develop significantly more, which made his lack of use in preseason so frustrating. We need to go out and get some WRs with physicality. Imp or NI. Guys who have a basic idea of what to do vs zone, man, when the QB is pressured, etc. We sure as hell can't seem to coach that worth a damn anymore.

And/or trade pieces. I think Manu is probably the only guy who would be able to play and contribute right away. Maybe cline if he gets a good bit of C reps in NFL camp.

I didn’t catch when it happened but we added the neg list rights to ni ol logan taylor who was a 6th round pick by the chargers. He was the top prospect won the ol in the draft. Played T in college is considered a G/C project in the nfl.

Thanks, yep. We are really only making it hard on ourselves. Nichols could be toast; in this system, we won't really know, though. That is some comfort at least, if only carrion comfort. I don't think any coaching staff in the league has been able to optimize the current practice rules well. Us, least of all.
